A solo project by Phish's drummer Jon Fishman, under a Zappa-inspired group name? More cynical observers will instantly harbor fears of overly clever, annoyingly quirky jam-band fare with overly facile "difficult" sections. That couldn't be further from the truth in the case of Pork Tornado. Instead of the expected Phishisms, Fishman and his pals embrace the proletarian bar-band aspect of Vermont's favorite sons. PORK TORNADO is bookended by two straight-ahead blues tunes, "Move With You" coming off like Los Lobos playing the Roomful of Blues songbook, and "Aaron's Blues" turning out to be a surprisingly believable slow blues tune with soulful vocals and shimmering organ.
A pronounced country influence is present as well, as the band comes dangerously close to approximating western swing on "Home is Where You Are" and "Blue Skies." "When I Get Drunk" works off a hopped-up Jimmy Reed feel, while "Guabi Guabi" conjures fond memories of roots-rockers the Subdudes. Of course, it wouldn't be a Phish-related project without a little left-field weirdness, supplied here by the bizarre a cappella tune "All American" and the funk freakout "Kiss My Black Ass." In general though, this is far more user-friendly fare than one would ever expect.

Pork Tornado album
$6.19 The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Pork Tornado CD music
$6.19 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."

| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
Pork Tornado music CDs
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and ...
| | Antony I Am A Bird Now CD (2005)
Pork Tornado songs
$12.49 Though he probably achieved his greatest mainstream recognition backing up Lou Reed on tour, idiosyncratic songbird Antony is a fully established artiste in his own right. Backed by the Johnsons, as on I AM A BIRD NOW, he crafts delicate ballads that skirt the lines between cabaret, artsong, and pop, with the kind of voice that Stephin Merritt would probably kill for. Antony's unique pipes bring to mind an androgynous Bryan Ferry or a high, quavery summit meeting between Jimmy Scott (another Reed supporter) and Aaron Neville. The stately, graceful, largely ...
