Sony's three-disc, 40-track collection of 60s Pop Hits contains most of the usual suspects (Van Morrison, the Hollies, Donovan, etc.), but there are enough Nuggets-esque wild cards here like the Rip-Chords' "Hey Little Cobra" and Peanut Butter Conspiracy's "It's a Happening Thing," and folk-flavored confections from New Christy Minstrels ("Green Green"), the Statler Brothers ("Flowers on the Wall") and Sagittarius ("My World Fell Down") to make this a compilation worth paying attention to. ~ James Christopher Monger

Billy Bremner's wonderful 1984 album has been improved in the only way it could be--by adding five additional tracks. "Laughter Turns To Tears" should've been a big hit anywhere it was heard, and the rollicking "Yes Please!" (a non-LP B-side) closes the set on a strong, dazzling note. In Rockpile, Bremner took a backseat to the songs of Nick Lowe and the playing of Dave Edmunds, but he's a writer, singer, and guitarist of style and taste. He rocks convincingly, but he's also got winning pop smarts. Even the '80s production touches heard on "Love Is Stranger Than Fiction" are tied so completely to Bremner's warmth and conviction that they don't sound as dated as they otherwise might. It's a shame that it took him years to follow up on this set (A GOOD WEEK'S WORK was recorded in 1998). BASH! stands up as one of the strongest albums from any of the '70s UK pub-rockers.
