Is this a valuable release for Dusty Springfield completists? Certainly; none of the 18 songs are too easy to find elsewhere, with seven of them never having appeared in the U.S. before this CD, and eight of them previously unreleased anywhere. Do they comprise a musically strong and pleasurable release? Overall, no, even by the standards of rare Springfield material. In a reversal of the way such anthologies usually work, it leads off with the seven least interesting items, all culled from soundtracks and obscure singles and/or duets from the 1980s and 1990s. Although Springfield's voice is OK or better on these, in truth the material and arrangements -- usually leaning very heavily toward MOR and adult contemporary music -- are not only poor and bland, but ill-suited toward her style. Much better are the ten songs from live television performances from 1968-1973, even if it's unfortunate that the exact sources of these aren't given (though the years of recording are noted for all of these tracks). Among these are a few hits ("Son of a Preacher Man," "A Brand New Me," "The Look of Love") and, more intriguingly, some songs she never released in studio versions. Those include a musically uninteresting medley of Seekers hits written by her brother, Tom Springfield, covers of "Up on the Roof" and "People Get Ready," and a good rendition of "Won't Be Long" from 1971, though she had done that on a 1966 LP. The sound on these TV clips is OK, and the arrangements adequate but sometimes not too inspired; it's hard to tell, but it seems that sometimes she might be singing to a recorded backing track rather than live accompaniment. As a worthwhile bonus, there's an unlisted bonus track of her 1967 radio ad for Great Shakes milkshakes. ~ Richie Unterberger

Heart & Soul Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) BRILLIANT "RARE" DUSTY SONGS This is a "GOT TO HAVE" CD for any loyal Dusty fan there are so many "Rare" or "New" to CD tracks, her duet with Cilla is A great treat also lovely to hear at last on CD here for the first time anywhere "Butterflies" and its B side "Wanna control you" not Dusty`s best two songs but to a real fan of her a definate must have.
The live tracks are superb many being never been recorded to disc by Dusty so a "REAL" treat and all the pictures are great too!!! Submitted by linton_soulsville (Swansea , South Wales, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Dusty's legend is alive and cherished in this recording The listener is required to remember that this collection consists of all of her studio work not sold lump sum by her shortly before
her death. The listener is also advised that some of the recorders are derived from video recordings not originally produced in stereo.
That said, this release is a true gem, and one that any devoted Dusty fan will cherish.
Her voice rings true in every selection. The "live" cuts may not have the sound of a studio orchestration, but her vocals are heavenly. The final cut, a radio commercial jingle, is a fitting ending to the CD. Buy this CD, and you will appreciate Dusty even more than ever. Submitted by a reviewer (Madison) Was This Review Helpful? Fan's Delight Having been a Dusty fan since 1967, I found this CD to be a true delight. It contains tracks I've not heard before, and I have collected over 200 seperate recordings over the years. Stand out tracks are "Sometimes Like Butterflies" and "Up On The Roof" The sound quality, even though mono on some tracks, is of a superior nature. DUSTY FOR DIE-HARD FANS Dusty's latest cd "Heart & Soul" is not a cd for the casual listener but for people like me who grew up on her music.
It's fantastic to finally have tracks like "Sometimes like Butterflies" on cd and it's the extended 12" version!
"Wherever Would I Be" was included on Dusty's final album "A Very Fine Love" as a duet with Daryl Hall, here we have Dusty's solo version.
There are duets with BJ Thomas, Spencer Davis and Liverpool's own Cilla Black ("Heart & Soul" - Cilla had the Heart & Dusty had the Soul!)
The opener "But It's A Nice Dream" is from the James Caan movie "Kiss Me Goodybe" and this a real gem.
Half of the cd is taken up with Dusty's Live tv appearances from the Bobby Darin & Rod McKuen shows. We have a Live version of "Won't Be Long" from her 1965 album "Ev'rythings Coming Up Dusty" but this version is from 1971 and I well remember watching her on tv singing her heart out on this song. Other Live gems are "Up On The Roof" done ballad style, "People Get Ready" & "Magnificent Sanctuary Band" which although good was done much better on her own British tv show "Music My Way"
A very welcome release for Dusty's devoted fans. Excellent artwork and some rare pictures are included in the sleeve.
Full marks to Varese Sarabande for making this release happen. Submitted by a reviewer (Scotland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
For the fans! Took a while to warm up to this, but it finally did. I have a thing for the song 'I Wanna Control You'. I think it was one of Dusty's last attempts at true R&B, but I love that track! The "live" cuts are great because we get songs that she never recorded before finally on a CD. Taken from TV shows, the sound is great!!! The rest of the tracks are just okay, but good to get anything by Dusty. Give it a try. Submitted by KC (NY, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
