The Indian Ocean is still one area of the world that remains relatively unexplored musically. It's every bit as polyglot as any urban Western society, and that's reflected in the surprising mix of influences and styles that emerge on this compilation, which sheds a welcome light on the region. In world music circles, Madagascar has become well known in large part for Tarika, whose work here doesn't disappoint with its sharpness and harmonies over an almost-Asian line that connects cultures from Indonesia to Africa. But there's also Ricky Randimbiarison, whose "Zaza Mitomany" brings in jazz and roots music for an enthralling stew, and Lego, with the island's 6/8 salegy rhythm on "Mamandrako." Get to Zanzibar and the Arab influence appears dominant, both in Belle Lumiere and the wonderful Culture Musical Club, whose string sound is almost Egyptian. The Seychelles String Band's "Polka" sounds eerily like a vintage Cajun recording, while Tam-Tam Des Cools bring ragga and hip-hop to La Reunion. Kaya, from Mauritius, has developed a style called seggae, where reggae and the local séga music come together in stunning fashion. There's not a dud among the 18 cuts here and this contains enough intriguing material to start any inquisitive listener on a search for a lot more. ~ Chris Nickson

Rough Guide To The Music Of The Indian Ocean CD music
$12.79 An album attempting to cover the multiplicity of styles available in Indian music. Given the enormity of such a task, it's amazing that Rough Guide managed to compile it into a single album at all. Of course, there are plenty of omissions to be had with such an endeavor, primarily in the folk end of the spectrum. The album starts out with a Bollywood classic, as Asha Bhosle's "Aaj Ki Raat" is taken from the original recordings ...

Rough Guide To The Music Of The Indian Ocean CD music
$16.45 HOBOS AND HEROSWe all know what a hero is but you may ask,What is a hobo? Well that is not an easy question to answer. For some the name means a Home- less bum, tramp or transient worker. To others it means a free spirit, who lives the gypsy life, eating over a roaring campfire and sleeping under the stars at night Historically the word meant a wandering worker, who traveled by rail riding in an open box car. While the days of true hobo have vanished with the steam train, today there is a new breed of travelers who like the hobos of the past are searching for the freedom of the open road. On this recording I pay tribute to many of the Hobos & Heroes I have traveled the roads of life with. This album is a celebration to the wandering spirit in all of us. THANKS Thanks to Wilfred Mangs and family for helping this creation comes to life. May thanks to Bernd Ha ber, and Tony Nightingale for putting together such wonderful International tours,. Also thanks to my mentors Pete Seeger, Utah Phillips and Jimmy Driftwood for showing me the way. Thanks to Michael Kleff and Nora Guthrie for yourFriendship and guidance. Thanks to Jeff Miller the world’s greatest folk coach, Thanks to Martin Guitars, Running Dog Guitars, and Bruce Taylor 12 strings, for building my great guitars. $6.69 The Mutineers began in 2006 as the solo project of singer/guitarist Brian Mathusek. Reducing his songwriting to its barest essentials, he wrote lyrical stories and melodies that begged to be sung. But the sound he envisioned—rowdy folk songs from days gone by, when singing was inclusive and fun—was much bigger than what he could accomplish alone. He asked longtime friend Michael Astudillo to join in on acoustic guitar in 2007. Mathusek plugged in the electric guitar, and the two began to add harmony to their rugged, stripped-down style. After recording The Mutineers EP in 2007, the duo took their act from their home base in Santa ...
