THE TOUCH contains 2 original LPs on 2 CDs: ROCKIN' IN RHYTHM (1977)/LAZY AFTERNOON (1989).
This two-disc reissue combines sessions Hank Jones waxed for Concord Jazz 12 years apart. The first CD contains 1977's Rockin' in Rhythm, originally co-billed to Jones, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Jimmie Smith. The trio ably handles a group of standards, though, as annotator Leonard Feather notes of the opening song, "Your Feet's Too Big," the nominal songwriters can be happy they are receiving royalties for improvistations that often use very little of their original tunes. On this track and three others, Jones plays an electric piano to good effect. He dominates the music, making his new star billing on the session appropriate. The ten tracks on the second disc were recorded in July 1989 and originally issued as Lazy Afternoon. Here, Dave Holland on bass and Keith Copeland on drums, with Ken Peplowski adding clarinet and alto sax, join Jones. Though originally billed as a Jones solo album, this is actually more of a group effort than Rockin' in Rhythm, with each of the musicians getting considerable solo time. The aspect that makes it more of Jones record is the material, which includes several lively originals from the pianist, particularly "Intimidation." Only the title song, from the 1954 Broadway musical The Golden Apple, really can be called a standard. Concord Jazz doesn't have much Jones in its catalog, but the label makes the best of what it does have by combining these two albums in a single package. ~ William Ruhlmann

Touch album
$8.15 For Live at Maybeck Recital Hall, Vol. 16, Concord persuaded a reigning giant of the piano to record at Maybeck's Yamaha keyboard -- and the result is one of the most musical, and certainly one of the most enjoyable, concerts in the whole series. Recorded closely enough so that you can hear him grunting ...
| | Ted Brown Free Spirit CD (1989)
Touch CD music
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the tunes are familiar bebop ...
| | Arthur Blythe Lenox Avenue Breakdown CD (1978)
Touch music CDs
$13.49 In addition to having excellent cover art (an illustrated cityscape in which a giant saxophone--complete with windows, a doorway, and stoop--takes its place among the neighboring buildings), LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN is also a dynamic, unjustly overlooked jazz album. Prodigiously talented as an instrumentalist and composer, alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe was one of the most innovative jazz musicians of the 1970s and '80s, and LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN, his Columbia Records debut, proves it.
Blythe's ability to marry the best of the genre's traditions (he is equally versed in swing, post-bop, and romantic styles) with his avant-garde leanings is evident here. "Odessa," for example, a modal exploration, begins melodically, yet pushes further into free-jazz territory as the tune progresses. The angular bop of the title track is offset by adventurous soloing and unique instrumentation (flute ...

Touch songs
$17.15 Singer/composer Michael Gira's 1980s band Swans, with their considerable darkness/bleakness quotient, were perhaps the only outfit that could make Joy Division and Leonard Cohen sound practically jolly. Gira's Angels of Light project, however, is another matter entirely. While the Angels' music is still somewhat grim in lyrical content and vocal timbre, the overwhelmingly intense Swans-like approach has largely given way to a bittersweet melodic presentation. The autumnal, reflective tone is enhanced by Gira's neo-folk proteges Akron/Family, who serve as the backing band.
The title THE ANGELS OF LIGHT SING "OTHER PEOPLE" refers not to other songwriters, but rather songs about particular people ...

$18.99 Hybrid Ice captivated audiences for years with their style and musicianship. And now…they are doing it again. The Pennsylvania-based rock group toured endlessly playing cover songs and originals in clubs and concert halls across the Eastern Third of the United States. Their 1982 debut album was heralded as nothing short of ‘amazing’ and spawned the hit "Magdelene" which garnered them considerable airplay.A follow-up album entitled "No Rules" was released in 1988. Years later, the national recording group ‘Boston’ re-recorded “Magdelene" and released it on their "Walk On" album. In 1998, Hybrid Ice stopped performing as a band. Then in 2000, a British label re-released the 1982 debut album on compact ...
