The Streets' ORIGINAL PIRATE MATERIAL was one of the first UK hip-hop albums the average American listener was likely to hear (at least since Neneh Cherry's RAW LIKE SUSHI over a decade before). It also represented the first Stateside crossover of the uniquely British mixture of ultra-spare hip-hop beats, chilly electronics, and sonic minimalism labeled "grime." Birmingham-born Mike Skinner, the Streets' mastermind, doesn't have much in the way of flow in comparison to the best American rappers, but he's part of a long tradition of plain-speaking street-level geezers in British music, the most obvious inspiration being punk godfather Ian Dury. (Skinner even updates Dury's catchphrase into the line "Sex and drugs and on the dole" on the powerful mission statement "Has It Come To This?") Skinner's everybloke delivery adds immediacy to the small victories and everyday frustrations sketched in his lyrics, and a mordant sense of humor enlivens otherwise deadly serious tunes like "The Irony Of It All," a pro-legalization song that sets the beery machismo of a conservative alcoholic against the pacifist slackerdom of a liberal marijuana user.
2002 debut is enhanced with the videos of 'Weak Become Heroes' and 'Let's Push Things Forward'. The album is nominated for this year's Mercury Prize, alongside luminaries David Bowie and Doves and was certified Gold in the UK. Vice.

Incredible! This 23-yr old British rapper has impressive lyrical content, sharp wit, and fantastic sound; definitely a favorite would be the song, "The irony of it all." Submitted by a reviewer (Los Angeles, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Hit The Streets of Slacker Great Britain For any true fan of hip hop. This is the real deal with a different slant. You get the feeling you have just met the British counterpart to our hip hop slacker. Most will probably be put off by the strong cockney accent. But if you can get past it you will find it hysterically funny. The beats are tough but imaginative. There are elements of garage and two-step. He has been compared to Eminem, I only found one track that made me think of Eminem. Mike Skinner is a talent in his own right. I can't wait for his next cd to come out. | | Zombies (I Love You) CD (1966) Bonus Tracks
Original Pirate Material CD music
$11.49 In 1966, the Zombies had already realized some success from their debut album, BEGIN HERE, but could not get their initial label, Decca, to release a follow-up. They defected to CBS, for whom they would record their masterwork, ODESSEY AND ORACLE, and, in the interim, Decca put out I LOVE YOU, a singles compilation that never saw US release. THE ZOMBIES (2004) marks the first American pressing of the aforementioned album, buoyed by a generous number of bonus tracks (additional A- and B-sides from the group's Decca years). While the conceptual baroque-pop sophistication of ODESSEY was still down the road, the phase represented by THE ZOMBIES shows the group to be one of the finest of the British Invasion-era bands--at their best they were fully on par with the Beatles' contemporaneous work.
Colin Blunstone's smokey, fragile tenor and Rod Argent's jazz/R&B-tinged electric keyboards drive the Zombies' sound, as the disc moves through familiar hits ("She's Not There," "I Love You") and more obscure tracks (the airy, touching "The Way I Feel Inside," the swirling, atmospheric "Gotta Get a Hold of Myself"). While the absence of CBS material keeps this from being a definitive anthology, it's as fine a slice of mid-'60s British pop as one could desire.
For reasons that have probably long vanished into the bureaucratic paper-shredder, this 1966 Zombies album was issued only in Continental Europe and Asia. In both the U.S. and U.K., there would be no Zombies full-lengths between 1965 (when varying versions of a debut LP appeared in each territory) and their 1968 finale, Odessey & Oracle. I Love You was not an album of material otherwise unavailable in the U.S. or U.K., however, but a collection of singles and LP tracks, all of which had already made it onto the U.S. or U.K. markets in some form, though most of them were taken from 45s that hadn't made it onto LP in either country. If you were a rock & roll fan traveling abroad in the '60s, then, it was quite a find, containing as it did numerous fine obscure mid-'60s flop singles and B-sides, some of which rate among the Zombies' finest work ("Indication," "Gotta Get a Hold of Myself," and "How We Were Before," for starters). Indeed, at the time, "She's Not There" was the only really commonly circulated track, and though "The Way I Feel Inside" had been on their British debut LP, it hadn't been released in the States. The album has very good music, for sure. But ultimately it would be a redundant item in the Zombies ...
| | Chris Harwood Nice To Meet Miss Christine CD (1970)
Original Pirate Material MP3 Album
$19.29 Nowadays Chris Harwood is being touted as Britain's great lost female folksinger. That's understandable -- her sole record, Nice to Meet Miss Christine, launched the tiny indie Birth label in 1970. The album disappeared soon after, probably because most listeners were unable to get beyond the first track, the exceedingly self-righteous, anti-racist "Mama," whose justified anger doesn't exonerate the song's lack of melody. Or maybe it was due to the fact that Nice wasn't really a folk album at all, as the guest musician roster makes clear. Guitarist Peter Banks was a founding member of Yes, pianist/organist Tommy Eyre would soon be joining Rainbow, brass and woodwind player Ian McDonald hailed from King Crimson, drummer Pete York came from the Spencer Davis Group, and guitarist Mike Maran would eventually become Britain's top musical arranger. Not a folkie in sight, but one hell of a lineup, expanding the sound of what one assumes was Harwood's own group -- ...
