Assemblage 23: Tom Shear (various instruments). Audio Mixer: Tom Shear. Welding together dance beats, slick melodies, and moody vocals, Assemblage 23's Tom Shear crosses the catchy synth pop of Depeche Mode with the dark grooves of industrial on Defiance. Always danceable, always a little disturbing, tracks like "Opened" never lose their pulsating momentum, while grittier numbers like "Drive" skillfully echo New Order by pairing bittersweet synthesizer swells with relentless electro groans. "Cocoon," one of the slowest tracks on the album at 81 beats per minute, is spare, scary, and dreamy. "Maps of Reality" is just the opposite -- fast, on the edge, virtually out of control. Defiance might seem a little repetitive to average rock & roll fans, but for listeners looking to return to the gray emotions of '80s, late-Cold War synth pop, Assemblage 23 is unbeatable. ~ Charles Spano Assemblage 23 Defiance Songs Defiance Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews An amazingly good CD. I love it. Tom Shear is "Beethoven" of Electonica music. I'll buy his other album called "Failure." I used to have a reservation when shopping for somthing between rock and dance music. I want something strong but melodic and artistically crafted (lots of Electonica music are so boring!). I found this CD and have been playing it over and over. I hope Tom will produce more. However, I hope he'll just play the music. His singing is a bit less polished than his music. Otherwise, a well-done job. Submitted by a reviewer (san clemente, ca) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

The best A23 album yet... This has got to be the best A23 album yet. I prefer the melodies of the newer material rather than the industrial droning of the earlier albums. He definitely addresses his synth-pop roots on this release, but at the same time keeps his style fresh. Favorite tracks are #1,#2,#5,#7 and #10. The most annoying thing about screamo is not its unlikely fusion of aggression and solipsism. It's the screamo lyricist's promiscuous use of the word "this" as lazy shorthand for whatever is bothering the singer at the moment. It was probably inevitable that a group would eventually form and call itself Glory of This, and no band has earned that name more completely than this one. Consider these lines, all from Adoration: "You're the first one to call me out on this" ("Flip for It"), "The only person ...
