Bud Corliss, a darkly handsome college boy is so obsessed with wealth that he'll do anything to get it. When his rich girlfriend Dorothy gets pregnant and is threatened with disinheritance, Bud stages her suicide, sending her plummeting from the roof of a high-rise. It's the perfect crime...until Dorothy's sister Ellen begins to unravel Bud's deadly scheme. Includes a trailer; stars George Macready, Jeffrey Hunter, Joanne Woodward, Mary Astor, Robert Wagner, Virginia Leith - Director: Gerd Oswald. Bud Corliss (Robert Wagner) is having trouble being accepted by the family of his comparatively-rich girlfriend, Dorothy Kingship (Joanne Woodward). Dorothy's pregnancy is only going to make matters worse. Instead of working their problems out, however, Bud coldly murders Dorothy and leaves false evidence that she committed suicide. When Dorothy's sister Ellen (Virginia Leith) decides to look into the death, Bud begins to wonder if he won't have to kill again. Lensed by Lucian Ballard, one of Sam Peckipah's favorite cinematographers. Kiss Before Dying Reviews: "...Lurid color schemes contrast with a dark story..."

Kiss Before Dying video
$31.25 In NIGHT AND THE CITY, director Jules Dassin brilliantly fuses two styles of filmmaking, crossing the expressionist lighting and framing of film noir with the almost documentary location shooting he used for THE NAKED CITY (1948). Dassin treats NIGHT AND THE CITY's central London locations as strange exotic places. As the movie opens, it is nighttime and small-time hood Harry Fabian (Richard Widmark) is running from almost unseen pursuers. Harry crosses in front of St. Paul's Cathedral, and Dassin shows this familiar tourist sight from a very high angle, then immediately juxtaposes a shot of Harry escaping through bombed-out ruins. While Dassin and director of photography Max Greene shoot exteriors from high angles or from cramped doorways, they shoot interiors from low angles catching their actors against heavily contrasted backgrounds. The result is a movie full of diamond-sharp, angst-ridden visuals.
NIGHT AND THE CITY is built round the dynamic febrile performance of Richard Widmark as the constantly scheming, ...

$9.79 One of the immortal bard's most frequently performed works gets a first-rate cinematic treatment here, via director Michael Radford (IL POSTINO). Al Pacino is virtually unrecognizable as Shylock, bringing an old-world gravitas to the role and clearly inspiring the rest of the cast to match his intensity. They succeed, and the result is riveting, rousing entertainment. Even if one is familiar with the play in advance, this is white-knuckle suspense and swooning romance all the way through. A 16th-century Venetian sea merchant (Jeremy Irons), devoted to a young lord (Joseph Fiennes), owes a debt for "a pound of flesh" to the anguished Jewish moneylender Shylock. Lovingly filmed in Venice, the film looks great, with settings and costumes all sporting a dusky, lived-in look that matches the subdued, naturalistic interpretation of the dialogue. Lynn Collins is excellent and ethereal as Portia, and her love scenes with Fiennes have an alchemical power that lifts them to dizzyingly mythic romantic heights. Vague homoerotic content and the grim realities of Jewish oppression ...

$20.79 Emmy winner Bea Arthur's brief stint on ALL IN THE FAMILY was so popular that it led to this ground-breaking sitcom. Married to her fourth husband (Bill Macy, ANALYZE THIS), Maude was the head of a family that included her divorced daughter, Carol (Adrienne Barbeau, THE FOG), and her son, Philip (Brian Morrison).
