Joyful Noise album
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, made in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1947. This provides background and context for his more well-known Savoy material, and indeed for everything this amazing person accomplished during the second half of the 20th century. Otis' first act as a recording bandleader was to borrow Jimmy Rushing from Count Basie! Rushing sounds right at home with this group, which included tenor saxophonist Paul Quinichette, pianist Bill Doggett, ...
| | Leann Rimes This Woman CD (2005)
Joyful Noise CD music
$6.86 When a teenage LeAnn Rimes burst on the scene in the mid-1990s, country fans were astounded by her uncanny vocal resemblance to the late, great Patsy Cline. Perhaps in reaction to this initial pigeon-holing, Rimes moved further and further away from her straight country roots; as the singer's career progressed, she eventually became a country-pop diva on par with Shania Twain and Faith Hill.
As the title suggests, THIS WOMAN completes Rimes's transformation into an adult crossover artist. Despite the twangy guitar licks of "I Want to With You," the track has much in common with the driving teen-pop anthems of Lindsay Lohan and Avril Lavigne as it does with Nashville's "new traditionalists." "Something's Gotta Give" delivers an interesting hybrid, pairing careening bluegrass violin with electric sitar straight out of a 1960s film soundtrack. Through it all, Rimes's voice remains a powerful, husky instrument imbued with equal parts stadium glitter and honky-tonk sawdust. In particular, "When ...

| | Jo Dee Messina Delicious Surprise CD (2005)
Joyful Noise songs
$6.85 When 2005's DELICIOUS SURPRISE was released, many contemporary female country singers were unveiling traditional-sounding discs hearkening back to Nashville's 1960s and '70s glory days. Never one to follow the trends, Jo Dee Messina stayed the modern country course, delivering an album packed with one bouncy, sassy, pop-country gem after another.
Seemingly taking cues more from "9 to 5" era-Dolly Parton than Tammy Wynette and Lynn Anderson, the Massachusetts-born performer sings tunes that are undeniably sexy and fiercely feminine. "Someone Else's Life" is driven by funky drums that would sound right at home on a Maroon 5 album, while the title track details an average girl's wild dreams over a rocked-out, John Mellencamp-like arrangement. "My Give a Damn's Busted" is classic Jo Dee--a swampy, hip-grinding beat matched with slippery fiddles, twangy guitar, ...
| | Kathy Mattea Right Out Of Nowhere CD (2005)
Joyful Noise album
$12.75 Having long transcended her country music roots, Kathy Mattea explores further afield in this folk- and world music-flavored set. Mattea has made a career out of a single-minded pursuit of her own muse, and here, just for the heck of it, she includes a bluegrass-tinged Stones cover in "Gimme Shelter," as well as John Fogerty's ...
