(1 Customer Review)
If there's a better reggae band than Badfish in Orange County, most of the world had yet to hear about it. Actually, Badfish may simply be the best band in Orange County, period -- for one thing, the band's reggae chops are impeccable, and for another thing, they don't limit themselves to reggae but veer happily into hip-hop and ragga at the drop of a backwards baseball cap and do everything with a remarkable level of both chops and hookiness. Too often young bands like this think that ancient history is Shaggy's first album, and their range reflects that lack of perspective. But the young whippersnappers of Badfish have done their homework and their music reflects a wide varety of influences, from 1970s roots reggae ("Don't Cry," complete with its old-school toasting and dubwise effects) to 1980s dancehall ("Mr. D.J.") and raggamuffin hip-hop ("Soundbwoy Killaz"). The whole album is peppered with exceptional turntablism (note especially the intro to "Whole Heap of Lovin'") and the program is augmented by a few nicely rendered dub versions. All in all, this is one of the most satisfying reggae releases of 2002. Highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

| | Pepper Kona Town CD (2002)
Soundbwoy Killas CD music
$12.29 From Blondie to the Police to the Clash, plenty of rockers have been influenced by reggae over the years -- and that isn't counting all the ska-punk bands that emerged in the '80s and '90s. Pepper certainly isn't the first band to blend alternative rock, punk, and reggae, but while the Hawaiian trio's second album, Kona Town, isn't groundbreaking, it is definitely above average -- not to mention quite likable. Although not innovative, Pepper isn't one of those faceless, cookie-cutter ska-punk combos that sets out to emulate the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, but isn't nearly as impressive. Pepper is smart enough to do its own thing, and that means having an attractive sound that could be described ...

| | Bargain Music Magic Is Over CD (2003)
Soundbwoy Killas songs
$13.45 From the '30s and '40s to the '90s -- from jazz to country to hip-hop -- there have been plenty of artists who made humor an integral part of their music. That was true of Fats Waller, Cab Calloway, and Louis Armstrong during jazz's pre-bebop era; it is equally true of artists who range from George Clinton and Frank Zappa to the Fat Boys to folk-rock singer Christine Lavin. And much to their credit, all of those artists knew/know how to be funny without becoming novelty acts. The same goes for Bargain Music, whose The Magic Is Over underscores the fact that the Los Angeles trio shouldn't be placed in the novelty category. Their lyrics tend to be humorous and quirky, although not in an over the top way -- they aren't as outright wacky as someone like Adam Brodsky, a seriously talented folk-rock/anti-folk singer from Philadelphia. Nonetheless, ...
| | Pepper Give 'N It CD (2000)
Soundbwoy Killas album
$8.79 Whenever a trend is hot, one can safely assume that saturation will take place. Inevitably, labels will try to cash in, and that means signing a lot of faceless, unoriginal clone artists. That has happened with everything from disco to gangsta rap, and there was no reason to believe that it would be any different with ...

Soundbwoy Killas music CDs
$10.69 The Ronnie Dove Collection, Pt. 2 collects two charting albums on one CD: Ronnie Dove Sings the Hits for You from 1966 and Cry from 1967. The disc is difficult to rate because of two conflicting issues -- the excellence of Dove's performances and the poor mastering of the CD. In terms of musical quality, Cry is one of Dove's finest albums, with Dove swinging in a unique Bobby Helms-meets-Wayne Newton style with a lush vocal chorus behind him. It's a treat to hear Dove sing Johnnie Ray's "The Little ...

Soundbwoy Killas CD music
$15.05 New York-based reggae producer Lloyd "Bullwackie" Barnes quietly created some of the best dub reggae of the 1980s, including this delightfully nocturnal-sounding gem originally released in 1982. Soundbwoy Killas album
$10.65 David Kolker is an energetic, yet nuanced player who can reel off mind-blowing solos and deliver gutsy heart-felt vocals. He trades soul-bending licks with whirl-wind alto saxophonist Isamo Sato while Paul LeFebvre interlaces wiry melodic counterpoints with his Stratocaster or lays down thick rich chromatic carpets of chords with his leslie-drenched guitar and pedal steel. Driving it al is the inspired bass playing of Time Luntzell and the slippery/pliant/subtle/urbane drumming/drum stylings of Tony Mason.Kolker has been playing to a full house of in-the-know musicians and music-lovers every Tuesday night from 10 to 2 at the Baggott Inn on East Third Street for the past two years. Like veteran drummer Bernard ¡°Pretty¡± Purdie who said ¡°Man, I an hooked on what is going on here and I¡¯m coming back for more,¡± after seeing Kolker¡¯s dynamic live performance for the first time, may of the people who hear them once come back week after week/ make Tuesday night 10 to 2 the centerpiece of their music-listening schedules.DAVID KOLKER PRESSTHE NEW YORK TIMES, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2001David Kolker, Melvin Spark, Mike Errico,Mercury Lounge, 217 Houston Street, at Ludlow Street, lower east side, (212) 260-4700.
