A solid but not outstanding Latin jazz session led by hard bop stalwart Cedar Walton, 2002's Latin Tinge mixes standards with a small handful of originals. Unusually for this time of session, it's the originals that shine, particularly the funky "Latin America." Part of the problem is that Walton chose a couple of real warhorses among his standards; it's difficult for "Perfidia" and "Besame Mucho" not to sound a little corny, frankly, although Walton and his small combo don't embarrass themselves. They do better with the Xavier Cugat standard "Brazil" and a surprisingly peppy take on Antonio Carlos Jobim's samba classic "Triste." Walton's piano is at the forefront of these relatively unadorned settings, taking most of the solos as a pair of Latin percussionists sets up a series of percolating, polyrhythmic grooves. Low-key without being low-energy, Latin Tinge fulfills the minor goals it sets for itself. ~ Stewart Mason

Purchase Latin Tinge CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Ted Brown Free Spirit CD (1989)
Latin Tinge
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the tunes ...
| | Stan Getz Bossas & Ballads: The Lost Sessions CD (2003)
Latin Tinge
$15.39 First off, these "Lost Sessions" were never actually lost. The music here was supposed to be released as the Stan Getz Quartet's first issue on A&M, and for the usual record company reasons, it was shelved instead. The tapes were in the vault and catalogs, so it's not like they were found in someone's closet. The bottom line is that Getz, already ill at this point, still had the goods. Produced by Herb Alpert (a genius in his own right even if his records don't always hold up), the bossas here are tough, innovative jazz tunes mainly written by Getz's pianist, Kenny Barron. Don't look for the gentle side of Getz that was so beautifully displayed on his early bossa records with Charlie Byrd and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Instead, this is the man who had reinvented his playing technique. With a strong foil in Barron, Getz was free to explore his form of melodic improvisation to a fuller and wider extent, which is evident if you simply check out his solos on Barron's "Sunshower" and ...
| | Frank Wess Quartet CD (1960)
Latin Tinge
$8.75 Frank Wess has long been one of the most underrated flautists in jazz, but it's his primary instrument on this CD reissue of a Moodsville LP recorded in 1960. With fine accompaniment by piano master Tommy Flanagan, bassist Eddie Jones and drummer Bobby Donaldson, the leader's lyrical chops are evident in Alec Wilder's rarely performed ballad "It's So Peaceful in the Country." The light Latin setting of "Star Eyes" initially spotlights ...

| | God Bless The Child: The Very Best Of Billie Holiday CD (2006)
Latin Tinge
$8.29 It's easy to call any collection "The Very Best Of" and mislead naïve listeners into believing the claim until they take the record home and give it a spin, and find it was compiled of dead dogs or substandard material licensed by some shoddy label to make a buck. Not so with this fine 14-cut collection by Sony/BMG Legacy, God Bless the Child: The Very Best of Billie Holiday, which certainly makes a convincing argument for the claim. While it begins with a 1941 performance of the title track, with Roy Eldridge, Jimmy Powell, Grachan Moncur, Eddie Heywood, and Herbert Cowans in the band, it goes backward to 1935 when she fronted the Teddy Wilson Orchestra for a historic session that yielded three classic performances, including "I Wished on the Moon." Her association with Wilson continues into 1936 with one cut, "I Cried for You," featuring Jonah Jones, Wilson, Harry Carney, and Cozy Cole in the band. The version of "Billie's Blues" included here is the original recorded take from 1937 with Bunny Berigan, Artie Shaw, and Joe Bushkin. Of course, "Easy Living" is included here, with Holiday once more fronting Wilson's band, which in 1937 included Buck Clayton, Walter Page, Jo Jones, and the great saxophonist ...
