After some great releases in the early '80s on Posh Boy Records (collected on CD as The Skinhead Years), the Channel 3 boys tossed their punk roots aside for an ill-fated excursion into beer-soaked roots rock with their "Last Time I Drank..." album in the mid-'80s, then quickly sank without a trace. The band's main men, vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Mike Magrann and guitarist/vocalist Kim Gardener return to the scene 20 years later with an album that side-steps their roots rock years and jumps right back into the punk fray. Though not as bitingly raw as their early years (it is 20 years later, after all), Magrann and Gardener do not embarrass themselves with lame re-writes of early glories. Instead, they play it like they mean it, knowing that they're a little bit older, but not sure if anyone is any wiser? Like a mixture of Agent Orange and the Clash, CH3 sets the guitars to blast and proceeds to shred your speakers with an onslaught of intelligent, well-written, and passionately played punk rock. "Best of Intentions," "Faith, Bourbon, Dignity," "The Fortune Is a Lie," and "Ready for Me" are the instant standouts, but after a handful of listens, this whole album earns its rightful place in your memory banks. Welcome back, boys. ~ Steve "Spaz" Schnee

$9.69 Although they only recorded one full-length record and a smattering of singles, Tuff Darts were a vital part of a thriving New York City community that featured Blondie, the Ramones, Talking Heads and Television as its elder statesmen. | | Supersuckers Motherfuckers Be Trippin' CD (2003)
Channel 3
$9.79 The Supersuckers are the only band in the world that could release an album called Motherfuckers Be Trippin' without sounding hokey or just plain ridiculous. In fact, it sounds kind of cool. Of course, this is possible only because the Supersuckers, and able leader Eddie Spaghetti, don't take themselves too seriously. However, what they do take seriously is rockin' out-- and that's something that they're still doing quite well 13 years into their career.
Album opener "Rock-n-Roll Records (Ain't Sellin' This Year)" is classic Supersuckers. Big riffs informed by years of binging on Thin Lizzy and Motorhead albums pull the listeners in as Spaghetti tells the truth about how much it sucks to be a band out there busting ass to make good records and put on rocking shows only to watch as worthless 3rd rate bands go platinum. Ever the optimist, in the end Spaghetti decides to stick to his guns and keep rockin' his way--which sets the tone for the rest of the album quite well. This album sounds like a Supersuckers album, and it will never be mistaken for anything ...
| | Grandpaboy Dead Man Shake CD (2003)
Channel 3
$11.39 So, like all of Paul Westerberg's loyal fans, you've been dreaming of the day that the great cranky genius of slop-rock would record a blues album, right? OK, probably not, but Westerberg went and did it anyway (under the guise of his alter ego, Grandpaboy), and Dead Man Shake turns out to be a better album than you might expect under the circumstances. Like the previous Grandpaboy long-player, Mono, Dead Man Shake was recorded in Westerberg's basement studio, with "Winthrope Marion Purcival V" once again handling all the instruments, and though one can't help but wish the guy would find a decent drummer, the shabby but emphatic sound of these tracks at once honors the blues-leaning material on deck and suits Westerberg's musical instincts quite well. (The thick echo and chunky guitar textures also recall the sound of the late-'50s/early-'60s Chess Records sessions, though one doubts the similarity was at all intentional.) Dead Man Shake was released around the same time ...

| | Lard Pure Chewing Satisfaction CD (1997)
Channel 3
$12.95 Lard's Pure Chewing Satisfaction is a dark, frightening look at everything wrong with America. The lyrics are pessimistic and apocalyptic in the extreme. Jello Biafra, who teams up with the dudes from Ministry to create Lard, is an artist who often prefers to make his point through unusual songs in which he cuts up and mixes phrases and decides what the song is about later, as he does here on the eerie "Moths." "Kneel... Al Jolson-style/Please, please, can I get a raise/Crawl, crawl through the steaming jungle/Please, please more purple Kool-Aid/Tabloid beauty corpses point the way," he sings on "Moths." Biafra says the song is about applying for a job. "Faith, ...
