| | Stars Of The Lid Avec Laudenum CD Stars Of The Lid Discography of CDs
Austin dreamweavers Adam Wiltzie and Brian McBride debuted on Belgium's eclectic Sub Rosa label with a work of ambient perfection. Using only guitars, tapes, and effects, the duo spins infinitely recursive soundscapes that rival the eternal-drone fabrications of La Monte Young and Phil Niblock. Far removed from formless drift or wallpaper-like ephemerality, Stars of the Lid's tonal inventions unfurl slowly but with an undeniable sense of design and purpose.
Ghost instrumentation--phantom woodwinds, massed spectral string sections--pervades the spellbinding AVEC LAUDENUM. These illusory orchestral colors, which shade and tint the three-part "Atomium" suite's patient, Fripp-like string strokings, are so well defined as to seem completely tangible. But, like the receding horizon of "Dust Breeding (1.316)+," they are merely mirages--auditory illusions conjured invoked through musical sleight of hand. The closing "I Will Surround You" is even more extraordinary, a single perfect note folded into a gorgeous, wordless expression of love, longing, and desire.

| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Avec Laudenum CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also a ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
Avec Laudenum music CDs
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and "Act II" will latch onto SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA with the same passion with which they embraced THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY. And most importantly, unreconstructed Southern rockers of the boogie-and-beer variety will appreciate the fact that this is an unapologetic, non-ironic valentine to the sound of not only Skynyrd, but the Allman Brothers, ...
| | CocoRosie La Maison De Mon Reve CD (2004)
Avec Laudenum songs
$12.25 An enchanting debut, CocoRosie's La Maison de Mon Rêve is a dreamy yet challenging confection of found sounds, folk-blues, trip-hop, girlish pop, and experimental recording and production techniques. The Casady sisters' breathy, slightly different, but equally lovely vocals circle each other atop delicately plucked and strummed acoustic guitars, chirping birds, and fractured beats, making for a sound that is hard to define outside of its own beauty and creativity. A strong Billie Holiday influence colors the sisters' vocals, particularly on La Maison de Mon Rêve's most accessible songs, but even then, CocoRosie isn't so much aping Lady Day as it is invoking her style in unique ways. Layers of crickets, birds, pianos, and intensely sweet backing vocals make "By Your Side" an unusually intimate and spontaneous-sounding, while lyrics like "I'd wear your black eyes/Bake you apple pies" give it a subversive, feminist angle. "Butterscotch" mixes ethereal sensuality with a mischievous sense of humor, and "Good Friday"'s whispered remembrances make it the most romantic moment on La Maison de Mon Rêve, which -- as if it needed any more romance -- was recorded in Paris in the springtime. The unusual found sound samples and percussion that pepper the album give it a uniquely immediate, you-are-there feel that is especially evocative on its more impressionistic tracks like "Candyland" and "Not for ...
| | Dredg Catch Without Arms CD (2005)
Avec Laudenum album
$8.49 Early on, critics often described Dredg as a metal group. However, the quartet has since matured into a hard-edged indie-rock ensemble that seeks diversity and refinement in its music. On CATCH WITHOUT ARMS, the band favors highly orchestrated parts, dense guitar riffs, and powerful drumming. Each song is based around memorable vocal hooks and sensitive lyrical content.
Many tracks on CATCH WITHOUT ARMS have a searching quality to them. Despite the sheer force of the music, this release is ultimately marked by well constructed melodies and intriguing harmonic ...
