When an artist wants to be truly harsh and blistering, density can be a highly effective tool. In avant-garde jazz, density is the thing that makes Charles Gayle, Albert Ayler, and post-1964 John Coltrane much harsher than AACM icons like Anthony Braxton and Roscoe Mitchell -- and in metal, density is what gives Slayer's God Hates Us All a claustrophobic quality that you don't get from the old-school fantasy metal of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Ronnie James Dio, and Black Sabbath. Density is a big part of what Demon Hunter does on this self-titled debut album; when the alternative metal band is in the mood for maximum brutality, it pummels the listener with a dense, noisy, highly abrasive metal/punk assault. But harshness is only part of what Demon Hunter does on this CD. While some alterna-metal bands like to be punishing 100 percent of the time, Demon Hunter's debut is an album of contrasts -- an album in which moments of intense brutality are followed by hauntingly melodic passages. One minute, Demon Hunter is mercilessly beating listeners into submission; the next minute, it provides some breathing room and shows how thoughtful its melodies can be. And these two sides of Demon Hunter usually have a way of complimenting one another -- more often than not, the band successfully pulls off this melody/brutality juxtaposition. That isn't to say that the CD is perfect; some of the songs are stronger than others, and one gets the impression that Demon Hunter's best albums are yet to come. Even so, the band's recording career is off to an interesting, if imperfect, start with this self-titled debut. ~ Alex Henderson

esta nueva banda tiene mucho camino por delante, aunque su disco no sea uno de loa mejores tiene unas canciones muy buenas con una exelente bateria y guitarras muy pesadas y una voz muy armoniosa, pero aun le falta un poco mas

Alice In Chains Dirt CD  (1992)

Demon Hunter album
CD $6.25  4.8 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
Brutal and hard but exciting and surprisingly melodic, DIRT made Alice In Chains national stars in 1992 after being around the Seattle alternative rock scene for many years. They produce a blindingly together sound, with the bass of Mike Starr able to switch between following the bass drum beat and cloning Jerry Cantrell's guitar note for note, albeit a few octaves lower. They have such polish that they are often reminiscent of the heyday of Led Zeppelin. Lyrically they plow the familiar angst furrow with tracks such as 'Junkhead', 'Sickman' and 'God Smack'. Equally satisfying are 'Them Bones' and 'Rooster', which saw them start in a direction that led to Jar Of Flies two years later. Recorded in 1992. Live Recording Alice In Chains: Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell (vocals, guitar); Michael Starr (bass); Sean Kinney (drums). Additional personnel: Tom Araya (background vocals).

This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine." Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also a lovely rendition of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" that's topped only by Ron Wood's reappearance on a finale of the Stones' "Ruby Tuesday." VH1 PRESENTS THE CORRS LIVE IN DUBLIN is a fine mix of the band's greatest hits with a few well-chosen covers, which will doubtless reach out to new fans and longtime Corrs aficionados alike. Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002. The Corrs: Jim Corr (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sharon Corr (vocals, violin); Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Caroline Corr (vocals, drums, bodhran, percussion).

Demon Hunter Summer Of Darkness CD  (2004)

Stylistically, Demon Hunter's second album Summer of Darkness is quite similar to the alternative metal band's self-titled debut album of 2002; the headbangers still get their points across with an effective combination of haunting, intricate melodies and sledgehammer brutality. The comparisons that were valid in 2002 are just as valid on this 2004 release -- comparisons that range from Slipknot, Nothingface, and Pantera to Sepultura and Slayer. But this time, Demon Hunter's writing is slightly more consistent -- not perfect, but slightly more consistent. Those who get the most out of this CD will be listeners who hold melody and ferocity in equally high regard; like before, Demon Hunter has no problem showing listeners their melodic side one minute and pounding them into submission the next. And more often than not, Demon Hunter skillfully pulls off this heaven/hell juxtaposition. There are plenty of other alt-metal artists who fluctuate between melodic intricacy and ferocious sensory assault -- that part is hardly unique -- but the advantage Demon Hunter has over much of the competition is the ability to make it sound natural rather than forced. Some alt-metal bands sound awkward and unnatural when they go for the kindness/cruelty and pacifist/aggressor contrasts; however, that isn't a problem for Demon Hunter, who give the impression that they wouldn't be happy giving the listener either all heaven or all hell. Both sides are valid parts of their artistic expression, and Summer of Darkness would be a weaker album if they had been forced to give either one up. Again, Summer of Darkness isn't perfect; some of the tunes are excellent, while others are merely decent. But the number of excellent songs has increased a bit for Demon Hunter -- and even though Summer of Darkness ...

Mudvayne Lost And Found CD  (2005)

CD $8.99  4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Drummer Matt McDonough and bassist Ryan Martinie play as if they are the same person, tossing off impossibly complex lock-step riffs ("Determined," "Just") like most bands hit an open E chord. On "Happy?" and "Fall into Sleep," singer Chad Gray moves from a throat-shredding rasp to sweet melodicism at the drop of a hat, taking angst-filled lyrics to new heights of dark obsession. Luckily, despite the inherent negativity of Gray's words, the seemingly boundless energy and impressive musicianship of LOST AND FOUND make for an uplifting listening experience. While some of its rap-metal contemporaries deserted the hip-hop half of the equation in favor of concentrating on death metal or neo-grunge, Mudvayne decided to keep the nu-metal torch burning with LOST AND FOUND. A veritable machine of complex rhythmic insanity that would make even Fishbone sit up and take notice, Mudvayne comes roaring out of the gate with a set that is ...

Dredg Catch Without Arms CD  (2005)

Demon Hunter album
CD $8.49  4.3 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Early on, critics often described Dredg as a metal group. However, the quartet has since matured into a hard-edged indie-rock ensemble that seeks diversity and refinement in its music. On CATCH WITHOUT ARMS, the band favors highly orchestrated parts, dense guitar riffs, and powerful drumming. Each song is based around memorable vocal hooks and sensitive lyrical content. Many tracks on CATCH WITHOUT ARMS have a searching quality to them. Despite the sheer force of the music, this release is ultimately marked by well constructed melodies and intriguing harmonic underpinnings. This is due in part to singer Gavin Hayes, who sounds more like U2's Bono than a metal screecher. Hayes's tenor soars above tunes such as "Ode To the Sun" and the title track. "Hungover On a Tuesday" contains another towering vocal, which moves effortlessly over Mark Engles's syncopated guitar. Finally, "Matroska (The Ornament)" brims with deep emotion; it also has an infectious, even danceable, groove. If CATCH WITHOUT ARMS shows a young band that ...

On its third studio outing, the Christian band Demon Hunter further hones its highly aggressive heavy-metal sound. CD $12.79  5 stars
Shadowthrone picks up right where Dark Medieval Times left off, as Norway's Satyricon completed the foundation of their extreme metal reputation with the release of this sophomore Moonfog effort. After the success of their debut, more resources were devoted to this 1994 follow-up, and the resulting sonic and conceptual improvements are quite noticeable. The tracks are dense and sprawling, the performances drip with black metal conviction, and the total package is a complex and fierce upgrade. The blinding opener, "Hvite Krists Dod," sets into motion a flurry of 32nd-note guitar riffs and sturdy drum patterns that Satyricon maintains with complete authority. The dogged pursuit of cacophonous perfection is a hallmark of this group, and Shadowthrone demonstrates ...

Damage Done
Dark Tranquillity Damage Done CD  (2002) Bonus Track; Japan

Demon Hunter album
CD $35.29
Swedish melodic death metal band Dark Tranquility's DAMAGE DONE features 12 tracks including "Final Resistance" and "Hours Passed in Exile". Japanese edition features one bonus track, "The Poison Well". Dark Tranquillity is able to find beauty -- as odd as that may sound -- in the extreme elements of death metal. Much more than mere noise artists, this Swedish sextet understands the importance of melody (usually minor key) and texture (occasionally ambient), and their hurtling aggression is imbued with a dark, neo-classical sense of composition, rather than the atonal chromaticism favored by similar (particularly American) acts. Damage Done should please metal fans who appreciate both death metal's extreme qualities and progressive metal's musicality, but it may not appeal to purists from either camp. ~ Andy Hinds Dark Tranquillity is able to find beauty -- as odd as that may sound -- in the extreme elements of death metal. Earthshaker (Golden Best)
Earthshaker (Golden Best) CD  (1983) (Import) Japan

Demon Hunter CD music
CD $31.89
For their first, eponymous album, Japan's Earthshaker traveled to San Francisco to record under the tutelage of Iron Maiden guitarist Adrian Smith, who went as far as contributing the song "Dark Angel (Animals)" to the sessions, but didn't otherwise attempt to make the quartet sound like his own band. Rather, Earthshaker -- the album -- contained classic but commercially oriented heavy metal which pretty much split the difference between the group's two biggest influences: Bay Area natives Y&T, whose seminal album inspired their name; and compatriots Loudness, who at that time constituted the gold standard by which all up-and-coming metal bands from the land of the rising sun were being measured. To be perfectly honest, typically mid-paced Earthshaker metal anthems like the title song and "Yume No Hate O" were never as explosive as either act at their best; and despite vocalist Masafumi Nishida's near-identical emulation of Loudness' Minoru Niihara, guitarist and chief songwriter Shinichiro Ishihara had neither the superhuman chops, nor the overpowering presence to match six-string colossus Akira Takasaki. Instead, with the exception of the unusually nippy highlight, "Wall," their made to order heavy rockers felt almost disturbingly civilized at times, while the album's big ballad, "I Feel All Sadness," took explicit cues -- especially during the guitar solo -- from Y&T's tour de force "I Believe in You." Also, as was still the case for Loudness themselves in 1983, Earthshaker had the curious habit of giving most of their songs English titles and choruses, but penning all other lyrics in their native tongue -- a trait that would continually hamper their ...

Tripswitch
John Mcsherry Tripswitch CD  (2006)

Demon Hunter songs
CD $14.49  Audio Samples
Piper John McSherry (a founding member of the traditional Irish group Lúnasa) and fiddler Donald O'Connor have teamed up here for an album of traditional tunes with a difference. What you might expect is a typical romp through a program of uptempo reels and jigs, all of them played with blazing virtuosity, their energy broken only occasionally by a well-chosen slow air or song. Tripswitch is very different. While it does have its rollicking moments, the focus is on slower tunes played with a searching taste and musicality. The disc opens with a three-tune set consisting of the traditional march "Rose in the Gap" followed by two reels, "Old Dudeen" and "The First Month of Spring." The first two tunes in the set are played in a strangely deliberate and completely entrancing manner, and the third takes things out in a joyful sprint. The title track is a lovely slow reel written collaboratively by both players, while the "Sean Maguire's" set is all zippy energy: pay special attention to the graceful harmony playing at the end of the final tune. More change-ups come later in the program, when the duo play a brilliant set of Castillian tunes in five/eight (complete with flamenco-style clapping) and a jig from the Asturien region of Spain. Various guitarists pitch in to help (including McSherry's brother Paul and Breton guitarist Gilles LeBigot) on various tracks, and the ...
