Don Cherry is one of music's great adventurers. Always ready to stretch himself, he has seemed more concerned with growing as an artist and expanding his horizons than with getting a big paycheck. This live set, Blue Lake, is a worthy introduction to his solo work. The first part of the set begins with Cherry on a Native American flute. His simple song is as moving and spare as a New Mexico mesa. Next, he and his band move into their interpretation of some Dollar Brand tunes. First, they lay the melodies out straight and give the audience a window into this neglected composer's mind. Then it's time for their ferocious, free-wheeling, Ornette Colemanesque take on the same tunes. The last brace of tunes finds Cherry mostly singing á la Sam Rivers. Like Rivers' voicings, one forgets that this is a man, and hears only another instrument. Just when the tension rises to almost unbearable levels, Cherry breaks loose with some forceful, controlled soloing. The tone is muscular, and the ideas as sure and stringent as bitter salt. Cherry's journey as a musician has been that of a consummate artist. His remarkable career deserves stricter attention from fans and critics alike. Hopefully, the reissue of this set will start the ball rolling. ~ Rob Ferrier

David Sanborn Only Everything CD  (2010)

Blue Lake album
CD $13.34  SALE Top 100 Audio Samples
Only Everything, David Sanborn's second album for Decca, feels like part two of his debut for the label, 2008's Here & Gone. That set was a tribute to Ray Charles and Hank Crawford -- the alto saxophonist who played with Charles in the '50s and early '60s, and influenced Sanborn tremendously. That set featured loads of vocals and tightly arranged tunes that were indicative of the performances of Charles' bands. Only Everything delves into more of that territory, but this time, Sanborn reflects more heavily on Crawford and David "Fathead" Newman, another legendary Charles ace from roughly the same period. The charts here allow for more soloing and offer a looser, more intimate, spontaneous feel. It contains only two vocal appearances: one by Joss Stone on a punchy "Let the Good Times Roll," and one by James Taylor in a unique interpretation of "Hallelujah I Love Her So." There are two different bands here -- one a septet with a horn section, the other an organ trio. Steve Gadd handles all the drum chores ...

Miles Davis Sketches Of Spain CD  (1960) Bonus Tracks; Remastered

The crown jewel of the epic Evans/Davis triptych that began with MILES AHEAD and PORGY AND BESS, SKETCHES OF SPAIN is as emotionally compelling as any performance in the trumpeter's remarkable body of works. Combining as it does the emotional gravity of two cultures--the deep song of flamenco music and the rich lament of the blues--SKETCHES OF SPAIN is a musical hybrid of enormous power and beauty. Gil Evans' immense canvas of orchestral colors inspires some of Davis' most deeply felt solo flights. He paints vast vistas of velvety, shimmering night sounds, and through it all runs the mountainous backbone of Spain's native rhythms and chants. The centerpiece of SKETCHES OF SPAIN is the Evans/Davis treatment of the second movement of Rodrigo's "Concierto De Aranjuez." Evans' charts engage Davis in ...

Forosoco
Bacon Brothers Forosoco CD  (1997) Collector's Edition

Blue Lake CD music
CD $10.69  Audio Samples Definitive Album
Although most musical projects involving celebrities are inevitably eclipsed by stardom, the Bacon Brothers, featuring prolific actor Kevin Bacon and his TV-composer brother Michael, are a fine exception to that rule. On their 1997 debut album, FOROSOCO, the Bacons offer up a charming set of country/folk-informed rock, with both siblings on vocals and guitars. Highlights of FOROSOCO include the nostalgic "Old Guitars," the spare "Brown Eyes," and the gently wistful "Adirondack Blue." Closing out the record is a playful live take on Kenny Loggins's "Footloose," a track that acknowledges Kevin's fame in a laid-back, good-natured way. The title Forosoco is derived from the first two letters of each musical genre the Bacon Brothers tackle -- in other words, folk, rock, soul, and country. Kevin Bacon acquits himself far more admirably than most actors who attempt to forge musical careers, sharing the load with his more experienced brother, Michael; guest appearances from the likes of Jon Bon Jovi and Jonathan Edwards also add to the record's mainstream appeal. [In 2003, Forosoco was reissued with live versions of "They Still Holler Boogie" ...

Gift: A Tribute To Ian Tyson
Gift: A Tribute To Ian Tyson CD  (2007)

Ian Tyson has had something of a triple career. As one half of the celebrated duo Ian & Sylvia, he was one of the primary architects of the Great Folk Scare of the 1960s. Then, in 1970, he helped to launch the country-rock movement as a member of Great Speckled Bird. Then he took part in the cowboy music revival with a solo album titled Cowboyography in 1986. A tribute album has been long overdue, and this one is blessedly free of obvious superstar cameos (though previously released songs by both Gordon Lightfoot and Tom Russell are included, and the legendary Ramblin' Jack Elliott makes a suitably grizzled appearance as well). The best tracks are ones contributed by artists whose names may not be recognized at all by non-Canadian folk music fans: Cindy Church (whose version of "Range Delivery" is a reggae song barely disguised as country), Jennifer Warnes (whose "Blue Mountains of Mexico" incorporates strings more successfully than one could reasonably have wished), and the McDades (whose "Smuggler's Cove" does the same with Irish flute). David Rea's take on the title track sounds rough in a way that comes across as more affected than genuine, and Blue Rodeo's Byrds-y version of "Four Strong Winds" starts out charming but eventually grows strangely annoying. Oh, but there actually is one more star turn -- Chris Hillman delivers what may be the album's high point, a gorgeous rendition of the wryly heartbroken "What Does She See." Very, very nice. ~ Rick Anderson 2007 tribute to one of Canada's national treasures! Tyson's body of work is one of the most revered in popular Canadian music history and his peers have contributed these recordings as a tribute to this pillar of songwriting. Artists include ...
