Essential Leonard Cohen songs Includes liner notes by Pico Iyer. THE ESSENTIAL LEONARD COHEN manages the considerable task of documenting the career of a man many consider one of the finest songwriters in the English language. Easily on par with Bob Dylan and Paul Simon in terms of sheer poetic power, Canadian troubadour Cohen started out, appropriately enough, as a prose poet before beginning a recording career in the late 1960s. Essential Leonard Cohen CD music is a 2-disc set with 31 songs. ...See Full Description

If you like Cohen, this is THE one CD to buy This set of two cds contains Leonard Cohen's milestone recordings. The best compilation I saw so far. Not only I will keep the copy I have but I plan to get a few more to have as gifts for my friends. By a reviewer (South Bend, IN, USA)
Brilliant! I; see; jj; from Massena; is awfully; fond; of semi-colons. However, I am not here to point out the disgraceful punctuation of blatantly stupid people, but review the Essential Cohen. By Sylwia (Prince Albert, SK, Canada)
Best collection (especially for newbies) First of all, the reviewer from Austin, Texas has no idea what he is talking about. :) Just kidding! No, I`m not. By a reviewer (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)
Okay, Just.........Okay This cd is definetly not great. It's just ok. DO NOT BUY IT. By a reviewer (Austin, TX, USA)
| Essential Cohen Essential? Yes. Nothing new but covers his song writing years in one collection. I regret the exclusion of a couple of personal favourites but the two CDs will not disappoint even if most of his albums are already in your collection. Mike Bloomfield / Bloomfield-Kooper-Stills / Al Kooper / Stephen Stills Super Session CD (1968) Top Seller
Essential Leonard Cohen songs A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.
Those familiar with the Live Adventures album these two recorded at the Fillmore West know how brilliant they could be on stage, and here's another gem, recorded at the Fillmore East this time and featuring 'One Way Out,' 'It's My Own Fault' (with Bloomfield trading licks with Johnny Winter...Johnny was signed to Columbia after this gig!). Newly remastered & now with 4 bonus tracks, 'Albert's Shuffle' (2002 Remix w/o Horns), 'Season of the Witch.' (2002 Remix w/o Horns), 'Blues For Nothing' (Studio Outtake) & 'Fat Grey Cloud' Previously Unreleased Live Track). Features 12-page booklet with unpublished photos from the recording session, new liner notes by Al Kooper & the Rolling Stone Hall Of Fame review by David Fricke. 60 scintillating minutes! 13 tracks. Colunbia/Legacy. 2003.

Neil Young On the Beach CD (1974)
Essential Leonard Cohen buy CD music After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite and vitriol, especially after the broken desperation of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. But while ON THE BEACH is edgy and deeply felt, it also manages to sound liberating and relaxed, with glimmers of hope and humor peeking through the spare, evocative arrangements. Inexplicably unreleased on CD until 2003, ON THE BEACH is both unflinching and resilient, and easily stands as one of Young's finest albums.

Warren Zevon Wind CD (2003) Top Seller
Essential Leonard Cohen CD music THE WIND won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Keep Me in Your Heart" was nominated for Song Of The Year and for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. "Disorder in the House" won for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and was also nominated for Best Rock Song.
With the specter of a terminal lung cancer diagnosis hanging over his head, Warren Zevon responded by rallying to make THE WIND, an album that found him working with longtime collaborator and friend Jorge Calderon, shortly after getting the news. The result is a tight group of 11 songs wrapped up in a year, despite a diagnosis that only gave Zevon three months to live. Along the way, plenty of famous names--both friends and fans--pitched in, including Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Emmylou Harris, Jackson Browne, Dwight Yoakam and Don Henley. Allusions to his situation are naturally sprinkled throughout, whether it's partying in the face of doom ("The Rest of the Night"), using a self-penned blues song to look back with no regrets ("Rub Me Raw"), or pledging his eternal love ("El Amor De Mi Vida"). Even Zevon's cover of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," avoids the pitfall of sentimentality as he can be heard bellowing "open up, open up" in the background of the song's chorus sung by Tommy Shaw, John Waite, and Billy Bob Thornton. "Keep Me in Your Heart" finds Zevon subtly asking just that, in a dignified manner guaranteed to mist up the eyes of even the most jaded person.

Ten New Songs CD (2001) Top Seller
Essential Leonard Cohen buy CD music The nine-year gap separating THE FUTURE and TEN NEW SONGS was by far the longest in Leonard Cohen's recording career. The surprising thing is that after all that interim time spent on a mountain in Zen meditation (no, really) the tone and outlook of Cohen's work seems hardly altered. Most importantly, his masterful songwriting acumen did not diminish one iota. If anything, Cohen's poetic prowess seems sharper, more focused and concise on 10 NEW SONGS.
Sonically, the album continues Cohen's fascination with synthesizers, as first heard on 1988's I'M YOUR MAN. For his first album of the 21st century, he's embraced the digital world fully; nearly every sound is generated by the electronic artillery of Cohen's producer/L.A. cohort Sharon Robinson. There's a polished modesty to the arrangements, always completely subservient to Cohen's richly resonant lyrics and crater-deep voice. Wordwise, Cohen tackles the vagaries of love, the fragile nature of humanity, and the emotional subtext of global politics; typically weighty subjects befitting a man commonly regarded as one of the greatest songpoets of his time. That mantle is duly honored and upheld throughout TEN NEW SONGS.

Dear Heather CD (2004)
Essential Leonard Cohen songs While there are some familiar elements present, much of DEAR HEATHER is a stark contrast to virtually all of Leonard Cohen's previous recorded work. Where the Canadian troubadour's previous albums all sounded like carefully constructed towers of song, built piece by painstaking piece (and Cohen has confirmed this as his working process), DEAR HEATHER seems to be an entirely more spontaneous offering. One might speculate that longtime Buddhist Cohen has taken the precepts of Zen to heart in presenting a batch of compositions unmarred by the effects of obvious labor.
Lyrically and melodically, these songs are more sparse and pared-down than anything else in Cohen's catalog. Some are whittled down to only a simple recitation repeated numerous times over a skeletal chord progression. By simplifying his approach to such an extreme degree, it seems as though Cohen is trying to get as close as possible to the heart of his work, without the literary trappings of his past accomplishments. Nevertheless, one link with his previous work is the bonus live cut tacked on to the end of the disc. In the tradition of past quirky Cohen covers like Irving Berlin's "Always" and Richard Blakeslee's "Passing Thru," the gravel-voiced singer tackles the country classic "Tennessee Waltz" with trademark aplomb that also reminds the listener of Cohen's ever-present sense of humor.
Arrangers: Leonard Cohen; Sharon Robinson.
