| | Skank Calango CD Skank Discography of CDs
Before the third album, Samba Poconé, which sold 1.5 million copies, Calango, the second, with its 1,100,000 copies sold, helped Skank to sell 2.6 million CDs in 1996. The album is named after a folkloric rhythm of the home state of its members, Minas Gerais. The calango is a cutting contest between two cantadores who improvise verses and is absorbed, amidst liberties, in "A Cerca." The band also re-recorded the Roberto Carlos hit "É Proibido Fumar." Social criticism is present in "A Esmola," one of the songs that had its authorship claimed by the Bahian poet Ajax, who suited the band. The album works wonderfully in the dance tracks mixing rock, reggae, dancehall, and even baiao. ~ Alvaro Neder Skank Calango Songs | 1. | Amolacao |

Calango album
$11.99 The music of Dead Can Dance has long been a favorite of the "Goth" crowd; however, AION is really the first one of the band's records that can actually be called Gothic in the classic, renaissance sense. Arguably Dead Can Dance's most successful record, it contains the band's most consistent set of songs since SPLEEN AND IDEAL. Widening their view to encompass more of the ancient world than with earlier records, Dead Can Dance explore styles from Northern Europe ("The Song of the Sibyl") to the Middle East ("Radharc"), with stops along the way at a number of other surprising locations.
The fact that it is based on a 16th-century Catalan chant notwithstanding, portions of "The Song of the Sibyl" are eerily reminiscent of the experimental side of David Bowie's LOW. Standouts include "Saltarello," which was adapted from a 14th-century ...
| | Paco De Lucia Guitar Trio CD (1996)
Calango CD music
$11.49 Guitar Trio is an excellent collaborative effort from three of the finest jazz guitarists of the post-rock & roll era: Paco de Lucía, John McLaughlin, and Al di Meola. Throughout the record, the trio doesn't just showcase their instrumental skills; they demonstrate their musicality. This is sympathetic, emotional musicianship, where each musician complements each other instead of trying to out-do the other. For jazz guitar fans, it rarely gets more exciting than Guitar Trio. ~ Leo ...
| | Israel Iz Kamakawiwo'Ole Alone In Iz World CD (2001)
Calango music CDs
$13.29 While the name Israel Kamakawiwo'ole falls trippingly off few tongues, the Hawaiian singer better known as "Iz" was one of the biggest stars in his home state. Iz first came to public attention as a member of the popular Hawaiian group known as the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau. His subsequent solo career brought even greater fame, and countless fans were saddened at his untimely death in 1997. Those who mourn his passing will be gladdened by the posthumous release of ALONE IN IZ WORLD, compiled from various recording session outtakes.
While one might expect a big, deep sound to emanate from a gargantuan-sized body like that of Iz, the hefty singer actually possessed a gorgeous, fragile tenor voice full of tenderness and delicacy. That voice is put to use here on tunes that alternate between voice-and-ukelele solo performances (Iz was no slouch on the uke) and more fully arranged tunes ...

| | Bob Marley Catch A Fire: Deluxe Edition CDs (1973) Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Calango album
$19.59 It is nearly impossible to imagine a time when reggae was not part of the cultural currency. Though Bob Marley and the Wailers cannot be said to have invented the style, they certainly brought it to the world stage, and this album was the torch that lit the way. CATCH A FIRE hit with the force of a revelation when it was released in 1973, and though Chris Blackwell tailored its sound with a rock audience in mind, the album was still unlike anything that had ever come down the pike. Ironically, even given its relatively full production and electric guitar solos, CATCH A FIRE sounds more organic and rootsy than any of the Wailers' subsequent releases.
While the percolating rhythms and burbling bass lines of the Barrett brothers, and the sweet, impeccable harmonies of Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer soothe and move, CATCH A FIRE also introduces the conscious, politically minded themes that would remain at the center of Marley's songwriting for the rest of his career. "Concrete Jungle," one of the towering standout tracks, addresses the trap of inner cities, while "Slave Driver" and "400 Years" take on ...

Calango music CDs
$17.39 Billy Drummond's third Criss Cross release takes a more adventurous approach than his previous two releases, as he enlisted the services of tenor saxophonists Chris Potter and Walt Weiskopf, frequent bass collaborator Peter Washington, and no one on piano to create a challenging program of standards and original compositions. Highlights include title track, with its insistent bassline and Elvin-inspired drumming, Weiskopf's "Drum Head," an Ornette-inspired ...

| | Slightly Stoopid Everything You Need CD (2003)
Calango album
$12.59 More than four years after 1998's THE LONGEST BARREL RIDE, the Southern California stoner/surf-punk group Slightly Stoopid returned with the studio outing EVERYTHING YOU NEED. While largely grounded in a reggae-pop vibe (see the anti-authority tune "Officer" and a breezy cover of John Denver's "Leaving on a Jet Plane"), the album also acknowledges Stoopid's more revved-up past with the fast-paced three-chord numbers "Perfect Gentleman" and "Punk Rock Billy." Though naturally not a highbrow affair, EVERYTHING YOU NEED stands out as one of Slighty Stoopid's more dynamic and immediately accessible albums, and works ...

| | Sonora Poncena Musical Conquest CD (1976)
Calango music CDs
$9.75 This album featured some of la Sonora Ponceña's most popular tunes. "Nanara Cai" is a hilariously surrealistic song, "El Pío Pío" is an obligatory piece in their repertoire, and "Bomba Carambomba" is among Luigi Texidor's most diverting moments. As funny as it is swinging, this wonderful recording features Héctor Lavoe, Tito Allen, Ray de la Paz, and a relatively unknown Rubén Blades on background vocals. Producer Louie Ramírez and musical director Luis "Perico" ...
