The leader of the Bobo Dread contingent continues to flirt with overexposure on this, his fifth release of 2002 (not counting Best of Sizzla: The Story Unfolds, also released in 2002). Luckily, Sizzla's energy seems to be unlimited and his bag of lyrics bottomless. And producer Bobby Digital appears to have an equally unlimited supply of neo-roots rhythms on hand; this is not the usual grab bag of familiar rhythms delivered in lackluster computer renderings, but a generous program of generally new and original instrumental arrangements played by actual human beings (and produced in the digitally clean style that is Bobby Digital's trademark). Not surprisingly, Da Real Thing continues in roughly the same vein as, er, last month's Ghetto Revolutionary: the "fire bun" rhetoric is still present, but no longer as fierce or prominent as before, and there are several tender love songs in place of the strident sexual lectures in which he and his brethren generally indulge. One of the album's most touching songs is "Thank U Mamma," in which he specifically thanks his mother for putting up with him in the womb for nine months and for preparing him to be a good husband and father. "Trod Mt. Zion" is a powerful chant of resistance to the blandishments of Babylon, while "Boom & Go Through" sets similar sentiments to a strutting hip-hop beat. The album closes with the surprisingly sensual (but musically weak) "Touch Me," on which he teams up with singer Rochelle. Releasing albums at this rate may not be the smartest long-term marketing move for someone in Sizzla's position, but it's hard to imagine a fan of neo-roots reggae who's going to complain. ~ Rick Anderson

Sizzla Da Real Thing Songs Da Real Thing Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Amazingly consistent album from an inconsistent deejay! Wow, what a great record.
DA REAL THING is full of great roots riddims, some of Sizzla's best singing and chanting, and fantastic, spiritual lyrics throughout. I've always been put off by his amazingly high number of releases and (subsequent) inconsistency, but along with BLACK WOMAN & CHILD, this is the best I've heard from him.
The captivating "Thank U Mamma", the well-titled "It's Amazing", and "Trod Mt. Zion" never fail to impress, no matter how many times I listen to them. But I'll be honest; every single song is great, except for "Touch Me", and awful attempt at a pop crossover. It's not enough to ruin the album, though, when you've got "Just One Of Those Days", "Mash Dem Down", Simplicity", "Bless Up", and the surprisingly strong "Boom & Go Through" (which is far better than Capleton's hip-hop flirtations).
Buy it if you're into Marley, Tosh, Buju, or any great roots-leaning singer/deejay. Submitted by Mark (Stouffville, Ontario, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful.
Black Woman and Child Part 2 This is like black woman and child part 2. It doesn't get better than this Kulonji does it again.

Sizzla Scorches Once Again Collins has quenched the palate of those genuine Reggae fans craving sound conscious lyrics with masterful rhythms. After a forgetful two years Sizzla once again delivers true Reggae reminiscent of the early hits from Black Woman & Child and Praise ye Jah. "I need you" and "One of those days" are two standout amidst a flawless album. Great stuff Miguel! Submitted by kishnicks (Toronto, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

As the formerly cassette-only ROIR label continues to slowly reissue its catalog of classic punk, reggae and ska titles on CD, hidden treasures are coming to light again, some for the first time in years. Ras Michael, one of the foremost exponents of traditional Nyahbinghi drumming and chanting, recorded his Rastafari album in 1972, and a dub version of that album was released simultaneously in a limited edition. Scraps of it have turned up from time to time, some on legitimate releases and some not, but ROIR's cassette reissue in 1989 was the first complete and fully licensed release since the original ...

ALL THIS TIME, by Sting, includes Police classics like "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and his solo career gems like "Fields of Gold." The Australian edition of this all-live album features the bonus song "Mad About You."
On the day that the second live album of Sting's illustrious solo career (and third if you count the Police's 1995 LIVE set) was to be recorded in Tuscany, Italy, the widely respected singer/songwriter/bassist was beset with one of the world's worst horrors of all-time. The show was to be recorded and broadcast live on the web on September 11, 2001, the day of the World Trade Center tragedy. Instead of canceling it altogether, Sting went on with the recording (although the web broadcast was ...
