Guitarist Jeff Barone makes an impressive debut as a leader with these sessions recorded for the English label String Jazz. Barone is a music educator who has absorbed a lot of the jazz tradition in his playing yet brings new ideas to familiar songs. The lively Caribbean rhythms incorporated into his breezy setting of Duke Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood" (adding co-producer and jazz veteran Jack Wilkins on rhythm guitar) complement his driving attack. Barone's intricate arrangement of "You Must Believe in Spring" communicates its message even without hearing the lyrics. A number of jazz players have explored Stevie Wonder's compositions, Barone's infectious take of "Don't You Worry About a Thing" shows that any great melody is ripe for a strong improviser. He switches to nylon string guitar for a moving duo interpretation of "Who Can I Turn To," once again joined by Wilkins. Also not to be missed are the leader's originals, including the funky riff tune "Crazy Talk" and the driving hard bop opener "Resa's Blues." This CD is an auspicious introduction to Jeff Barone. ~ Ken Dryden
Guitarist Jeff Barone has been a part of the New York City jazz scene for over a decade. He started in the jazz organ clubs of Harlem working with Jimmy "Preacher" Robins, Mel Davis, Seleno Clarke, Rahn Burton, and a five year stint with groove/acid jazz

Crazy Talk album
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than ...

Crazy Talk music CDs
$13.85 An excellent modern mainstream pianist who is a bit taken for granted, Rob Schneiderman was actually one of the better jazz pianists of the 1990s. On Back in Town, he plays standards but often with subtle surprises. For example, the ballad "Darn That Dream" is taken up-tempo, Jobim's "A Felicidade" is stripped of its bossa nova rhythms, "Chega ...
| | Peter Leitch Autobiography CD (2004)
Crazy Talk songs
$13.79 Guitarist Peter Leitch can always be relied upon to play high-quality modern straight-ahead jazz. On this Reservoir CD, he heads a quintet that also features the underrated but talented Jed Levy on tenor and (on two numbers) flute, pianist George Cables, bassist Dwayne Burno, and drummer Steve Johns. The music is primarily hard bop, with the highlights including Henry Mancini's "Theme from Mr. Lucky," Charlie Parker's obscure "Segment," and an unaccompanied acoustic guitar version of "East of the Sun." Most unusual is hearing a cover ...

| | John Lee Hooker It Serves You Right To Suffer CD (1966)
Crazy Talk CD music
$5.35 A number of John Lee Hooker CDs have been released over the years, many of them somewhat shoddy compilations of rather dubious-sounding live shows and unlabeled re-recordings of vintage material. This makes the reissue of a classic John Lee Hooker album like 1966's smoking IT SERVES YOU RIGHT TO SUFFER all the more appreciated.
Backed by the sympathetic quartet of guitarist Barry Galbraith, legendary bassist Milt Hinton, ...
