(15 Customer Reviews)
This special edition includes a bonus DVD featuring live and video performances from 1990 to 2000.
The decade of the 1990's was an era of transition for the legendary quartet from Dublin known to the world as U2. An earlier (and more serious) body of work gave way to albums such as POP and ZOOROPA, which radiated the band's positivity and energy in a more lighthearted fashion. THE BEST OF 1990-2000 culls the benchmark tracks from the band's studio albums ("One," "The First Time," "Beautiful Day"), as well as key movie soundtrack cuts ("Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me," "Miss Sarajevo").
While some diehards cooled their passion for the band in the height of their glitz and glamour, experiencing "Stay (Faraway, So Close)" shows the band stripped down to perfection in their most basic and graceful state. THE BEST OF goes even further, luring collectors with new tracks ("Electrical Storm," "The Hands That Built America") as well as new mixes of "Numb" and "Discotheque."
This 15-song '80s best-of assortment (stick around for the hidden track) spans the decade, reaching back to 1980's "I Will Follow," when Bono and company were peach-fuzzy and earnest as choirboys, and tracking their path through their most glaring misstep, 1988's overblown Rattle and Hum. The limited-edition second disc is the real treat for stalwart fans. It's laden with odds and ends, highlights of which include some spot-on covers (Patti Smith's "Dancing Barefoot," the old pop hits "Everlasting Love" and "Unchained Melody") and misplaced originals (the great '82 B-side "Trash, Trampoline, and the Party Girl").
Recorded between 1990 & 2000.
U2: The Edge (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Bono (vocals, guitar); Adam Clayton (bass); Larry Mullen (drums, percussion).
Producers include: Steve Lillywhite, Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, William Orbit, U2.

| Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Grandes temas nuevos.
Han preferido colocar versiones 12" y han omitido verdaderas joyitas como Furtunate son, Night and day, Slow dancing, Paint it black, Alex descends into hell for a bottle of milk/Korova 1, Where did it all go worng?, Always, Salome (en su versión normal), (I´ve got you) under my skin, y mejor no sigo porque me inunda la cólera. Es una pena porque el primer recopilatorio de lados B, a pesar de tener sonoras ausencias, presentaba una selección más gratificante para el fanático. ¿Cuándo se animarán a sacar una colección de EP´s y lados B (incluyendo el inconseguible U2-3) de una vez por todas? Hey I'd even buy a CD of Bono reading a Boise, ID phonebook This collection is really only for the die hard U2 fan who would basically buy anything the band does. And frankly that's me.
The decade began great with one of their greatest albums, "Achtung Baby" - so of course there's "One" and "Mysterious Ways" - though I would have traded "Even Better than The Real Thing" for "The Fly" - which is a far better song. Also missing is if "God Will Send his Angles" which is the best song from Pop - and once again I would have traded "Discotheque" for it.
The collection also includes "Electrical Storm" and "Hands that Built America" which I didn't really care for the lyrics of (especially Storm) at first. But there is once again that depth of emotion that the band brings to both of these songs (especially Bono's voice) that really creates an impact.
The B-sides are in general a waste of time - unless you're like me and love "Your Blue Room" simply for the fact that Adam gets to sing.
If you're a die hard fan that did buy Pop at one time or if you really enjoy this period for the band then go buy this.
But if you want the best from this period go out and buy "Achtung Baby" if you don't already have it. Then go buy "All That you Can't Leave Behind."
Though with the two most recent songs I really can't wait to see where the best rock band right now goes next. Submitted by m-shreve (Chicago) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
All That You Can´t Live Without This pair of discs are just the best that U2 could possibily do as a compilation for this decade.
As for disc one, "Even Better Than the real thing" is a great opener, followed by the catchy "Mysterious Ways". When "Beautiful Day" starts, you know that this disc is worth it, as for "Electrical Storm", it's already a classic for me. "One", is maybe one of the most known u2 songs. "Miss Sarajevo", is a great U2 song, even if it wasn´t a hit. "Stay" is, for me, the most romantic song U2 has ever made; "Stuck in a moment" somehow relents the whole disc, but just enough to accelerate it as fast as a Viper with "Gone" (which new mix is simply outstanding, and really energy filled). Here you get to the discs peak.
When "Until the End of the world" starts, you feel as if you've parked inside a moose, as it is dramatically slower than "Gone (new mix)". "The Hands That Built America" is a good song, thats it, but with better lyrics. As for "Discothéque", I'm still missing the "Boom-Chaz", and this mix is more ambiental. "Hold me, thrill me, kiss me, kill me" makes an excellent opener for "Staring at the Sun (new mix)", which is more rhytmic than the original mix, but the new mix for "Numb" is as outstanding as "Gone": this song gives the ultimate definition for "Caos" when the voices of Larry, Edge and Bono collide with each other. At last, but no least, "The First Time" lands the plane on a dime, giving you all you need to have an excellent day after hearing an excellent compillation.
Now, everyone has complained about disc two. Just try to remember that this was U2's experimental-electronic decade, so expect heavy electronic mixes, some good, some bad, but electronic (hey, this may work while driving your car!). And for the non-mixes, "Electrical Storm (non-orbit-mix)" is a real rock U2 classic. Oh yes, "Lady with the spinning head" is the perfect couple for "The Fly", if you love the last song, you should have this one.
As for the DVD, yes, it has only 4 tracks, but hey, who gives you 2 CDs and a complete DVD for this price.
If you're a U2 fan, just buy it, if you're getting to know U2, this might not be a "Greatest Hits" but it will introduce you to the Best Band Of The World. Submitted by a reviewer (Colima, Col, Mexico) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A great compilation, but missing something... This second collection of greatest hits from U2's second decade of music is a real kicker. From the opening riff of Even Better Than the Real Thing to the solitude of The First Time, this collection boasts some of U2's greatest works. One, Stay(Faraway, So Close!), Mysterious Ways... all of their hits from the 90's. And of course there are the Pop revamps to be heard, with Gone sounding more like the live version and a few "BOOM-CHAs" missing from the new Discotheque. But I couldn't help but notice that a couple of songs, namely The Fly and Lemon, were missing, not to mention the mourning sounds of The Ground Beneath Her Feet. Overall, this collection is great for any fan of U2 or even the casual music lover. And the B-Sides are an extra special bonus for you big fans out there, like me.
