The Heptones were one of the first--if not THE first--reggae vocal groups, and also one of the finest--beginning in the mid-1960s, they had a three-part, gospel-tinged, R&B-based harmony sound that became the outline for nearly all successive rocksteady and reggae harmony groups. Preceding their '70s classics NIGHT FOOD and PARTY TIME by several years, COOL RASTA is a collection of their earliest, most righteous, groove-heavy tunes, including their best-known song, the inspirational "Book Of Rules." While slightly more rough-hewn than their '70s work, COOL RASTA is nonetheless earthy, passionate, and essential stuff for devotees of cool Jamaican vocal sounds.
One of the preeminent vocal groups of ska and rocksteady eras, the Heptones were talented, successful, and flexible enough to adapt to the changing tide of Jamaica's music in the 1970s. This was fortunate, because the group released some of its finest material in the '70s, blending cool doo-wop-flavored harmonies with the deep roots rhythms of reggae. COOL RASTA finds the fine lead tenor of Leroy Sibbles and the sweet voices of Earl Morgan and Barry Llewellyn in top form.
The record is aptly titled--easy, laid-back grooves are the order of the day here. The title track in particular is a drowsy, down-tempo jam that has the Heptones' stellar harmonies floating through the mix like ghosts. "Dreadlock" is half-loungy, half-cerebral, and upholds the group's Rastafarian beliefs, as do "Peace and Harmony" and the historically conscious "Suffering So." Trojan's 2002 reissue of the album features wonderfully remastered sound and nine bonus tracks, including several compelling dub remixes and two versions of "Book of Rules," one of the band's best songs.
Includes liner notes by Dave Hendley.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.

Cool Rasta album
$12.05 Perhaps more than any other Jamaican singer, Jimmy Cliff always had his sights set on the international market, and while he obviously works from a reggae base, his sound -- featuring full productions often cushioned with strings -- completely defines what has come to be known as reggae-pop. Ironically, given that it was his contemporary Bob Marley who broke through to become reggae's icon, Cliff may not have sounded, in the end, Jamaican enough. Follow My Mind originally came out in 1975 on the heels of the U.S. release of the Harder They Come soundtrack (which featured a quartet of Cliff's finest songs, including the magnificent "Many Rivers to Cross"), and rode Harder's wake onto the lower reaches of the pop charts. But Follow My Mind was a smooth, polished album, with few of the charming rough edges that characterized Cliff's previous work with producer Leslie Kong (who died in 1971, shortly after the Harder soundtrack was completed), and while it definitely had a Jamaican lilt, it sounded as much like Marvin Gaye as it did Marley, and ultimately it was the ragged, gospel-fueled songs ...

| | Culture Two Sevens Clash CD (1978)
Cool Rasta album
$14.29 One of the masterpieces of the roots era, no album better defines its time and place than Two Sevens Clash, which encompasses both the religious fervor of its day and the rich sounds of contemporary Jamaica. Avowed Rastafarians, Culture had formed in 1976, and cut two singles before beginning work on their debut album with producers the Mighty Two (aka Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson). Their second single, "Two Sevens Clash," would title the album and provide its focal point. The song swept across the island like a wildfire, its power fed by the apocalyptic fever that held the island in its clutches throughout late 1976 and into 1977. (Rastafarians believed the apocalypse would begin when the two sevens clashed, with July 7, 1977, when the four sevens clashed, the most fearsome date of concern.) However, the song itself was fearless, celebrating the impending apocalypse, while simultaneously reminding listeners of a series of prophesies by Marcus Garvey and twinning them to the island's current state. ...

While many bands lumped under the nu-metal banner seem to rely on angry posturing and shock tactics to sell records, Staind has quietly and consistently topped the sales and radio charts with a stripped-down and emotionally direct approach devoid of gimmickry. On the group's third album 14 SHADES OF GREY, singer Aaron Lewis and crew deliver a distinctly organic-sounding, mature disc that still manages to rock like a wild beast.
Powered by the pile-driving yet earthy rhythm section of bassist Johnny April and drummer Jon Wysocki, Staind stands head and shoulders above many of its contemporaries by mixing de-tuned thrash with an old-school rock & roll kick. There's a touch of bluesy Led Zeppelin mixed in with the angst, and the band's subtle sexiness serves to temper Lewis's darker melodic and lyrical instincts. Featuring songs that address everything from the joyous birth of the singer's daughter ("Zoe Jane") to the tragic death of Alice In Chains vocalist Layne Staley ...
