Having made a name for themselves in the relatively young world of emo since emerging on the scene in 1997, The Juliana Theory made quite a splash in ascending upwards to the big leagues via LOVE, their major-label debut. With former Talking Head Jerry Harrison aboard as a producer, this Pennsylvania quintet busts out of the emo ghetto with a number of tunes cloaked in a variety of stylistic nuances. The churning chaos of "Trance" brings to mind Black Sabbath's deeper and darker side; subtle, waltz-like tempos get infused into the harmony-laden "Into The Dark," and the closing number "As It Stands" benefits from a stark arrangement marked by the use of a medieval-sounding acoustic guitar. Frontman Brett Detar sings as if his soul is bared to the world, and this approach comes in handy when he's navigating the build-up and subtle time changes of "Shell Of A Man." Also worth checking out is "Jewel To Sparkle," a big, loud pop song with all the right ingredients: crackling guitar, a healthy sprinkling of hooks, and dark, Cure-like overtones.

Love album
$10.65 Take Weston around the time they released Got Beat Up (i.e., back when Weston was good), take out all the heartbroken, rainy day, "Charlie Brown gets a valentine"-esque lyrics, and take out all the slap-happy, nerd pop riffs and add a little bit of God-fearing, bible-thumping vows. That pretty much describes The Juliana Theory. But just because these guys sound a bit more grown up than your average pop-punk band doesn't make them as appealing as turning 40; nor do they shove God down your throat (the fact that they're on Tooth and Nail is the only significance ...
| | Juliana Theory Emotion Is Dead CD (2000)
Love CD music
$11.19 With their third release, the Juliana Theory embraced vocal harmonies and pop flourishes, fashioning a sound that helped distinguish their band from the rest of the burgeoning emo scene. The combination of "Into the Dark" and "Don't Push Love Away" proved to be one of the strongest openings of any Juliana Theory record, with both songs introducing minor-key verses before delving into anthemic, cathartic power chords. ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Love music CDs
$6.19 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
Love songs
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and "Act II" will latch onto SOUTHERN ...

| | Dredg Catch Without Arms CD (2005)
Love CD music
$8.49 Early on, critics often described Dredg as a metal group. However, the quartet has since matured into a hard-edged indie-rock ensemble that seeks diversity and refinement in its music. On CATCH WITHOUT ARMS, the band favors highly orchestrated parts, dense guitar riffs, and powerful drumming. Each song ...
| | Pretenders Greatest Hits CD (2000)
Love music CDs
$19.79 Chrissie Hynde crafted some classic rock tunes with her band the Pretenders, and this hits compilation includes many of her finest songs, such as "Brass in Pocket" and "Stop Your Sobbing."
The Pretenders' 1987 collection, The Singles, did a fine job of assembling most of the group's finest tracks up to that point in their career, so after another decade passed, their record company felt it was necessary to compile a more "updated" collection, 2000's Euro-only release Greatest Hits. Although it contains a total of 20 tracks, Greatest Hits ultimately fails to improve over its predecessor, for the simple fact that the early '80s was the Pretenders' artistic and commercial peak, ...
