(21 Customer Reviews)
Initial pressings of this first edition contain a bonus disc. Recorded between 1970 & 2002. Includes liner notes by Paul Gambaccini. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Rarely has a greatest-hits collection been as effective as Elton John's first compilation of Greatest Hits. Released at the end of 1974, after Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Caribou had effectively established him as a superstar, Greatest Hits is exactly what it says it is -- it features every one of his Top Ten singles ("Your Song," "Rocket Man," "Honky Cat," "Crocodile Rock," "Daniel," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," "Bennie and the Jets," "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me"), plus the number 12 "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting," and radio and concert favorites "Border Song" and "Candle in the Wind." Greatest Hits is a nearly flawless collection, offering a perfect introduction to Elton John and providing casual fans with almost all the hits they need. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Here you go, Elton fans--a definitive two-disc collection of some of the bespectacled one's most beloved tunes. The full gamut of Elton John's stellar career is covered here. The archetypal singer-songwriter introspection of "Your Song" kicks things off, giving way in short order to the more glam pop moments of "Honky Cat" and "Saturday Night's All Right For Fighting." The Roy Orbison-like ballad "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" and the moving, mournful "Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word" represent the sadder side of the usually sunny popster. The second disc digs into Elton's later work, coming up with such gems as the surprisingly rocking "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That" and the Beatleseque "I Want Love," the latter proving that the 21st century found Elton still standing, in artistic terms.Q (12/02, p.126) - 3 out of 5 - "...This reappraisal is wisely timed....He was a phenomenally talented barroom piano basher, capable of tender love, majestic showstoppers and poignant soul-searching..." Q (1/04, p.136) - 4 stars out of 5 - "'Your Song' and 'Daniel' are especially beautiful." Uncut (01/03, p.133) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...An impressive record by anyone's standards..." This particular CD brings back a lot of happy memories for me during those swinging 1970s. I couldn't be happier with my decision to purchase this CD. Brings back years of memories If your life didn't parallel the hits of Elton John over the past 32 years then you won't appreciate the evolution of the music and the man. It has to be an experience where you can remember where you were when his songs played. If you are a newer Elton John fan and want to see where he's come from, give it a try! Still Standing! By reading the titles that are included on these discs, you know that you can't go wrong with this purchase. Most of the major hits are here with disc-1 being dedicated to the 70's blockbusters. The only downside to owning any greatest hits compilation is that you lose some of the feeling of context of the album in which the music was written for. That being said, this is a good one to own. Life-time Elton John fan Have been listening Elton John since I can remember, and this is the best of the best! Did not care for the bonus CD, but you can't go wrong with the other two. Had to add this to my Elton John collection. A must for all EJ fans. Submitted by a reviewer (Montgomery, AL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$50.89 If you don't know what you're getting into here, the Humblebums' first album is culture shock a go-go. Billy Connolly, after all, is best-known as an extraordinarily hirsute comedian whose pop fame rests on a U.K. number one dismantling Tammy Wynette's "Divorce" and a follow-up mangling the Village People's "In the Navy." Then there's Gerry Rafferty, who we associate with gentle, catchy, soft folk-rock vibes like "Stuck in the Middle With You," "Star," and "Baker Street." But put them together in a single unit, and the pair is barely distinguishable. Barely. Seven songs apiece see Connolly touching at least a light vein of dry humor (his fine singing voice is more of a shock); "My Apartment" is a belicose take on Al Stewart's bedsitting-room ...
