To deter confusion with the American band that hit with 1966's "Time Won't Let Me" (and for that matter, the third-string U.K. punk outfit circa 1977-78), this group is most commonly referred to as the Dutch Outsiders by garage rock enthusiasts. And that crowd refers to them quite regularly, because, as this comprehensive anthology shows, the Outsiders were one of the great European rock bands of the 1960s. Led by singing guitarist Wally Tax, the Outsiders took the tough R&B leanings of the Rolling Stones, the Pretty Things, and the early Small Faces as their starting point, with later singles incorporating elements of American psychedelia and U.K. freakbeat in the style of Love, the Move, or the Creation. Highlights here include the bracing first single, "You Mistreat Me," and the sneering "Lying All the Time."
2008 collection from the R&B/Psyche band known as The 'Dutch' Outsiders (save confusion with the U.S. group of the same name), released from 1965-69. The Outsiders ruled the R&B/Psych Beat roost, a big hit in Europe and equally in the U.S. where they sold two million records. Leader Wally Tax is still releasing new albums today, his latest on Virgin in Holland, and has helped with the sleeve notes. The package is licensed from EMI Holland and the band and packaged by Phil Smee with plenty of photos and memorabilia. 24 tracks. RPM.Mojo (Publisher) (1/03, p.106) - "...This is for Nederbeat neophytes and aficionados alike..." Record Collector (magazine) (p.101) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The Outsiders quickly became stars in their native Netherlands, initially using the records of The Pretty Things, Them and the Stones as the springboard to launch something altogether more unique." | Strange Things Are Happening: The Complete Singles 1965-1969 Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Mind-blowing Dutch Rockers There are not enough superlatives that can be thrown this bands way. I will just say that Wally Tax and the boys deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as The Who, The Rolling Stones,
and The Yardbirds. Crunching, driving
mid-60s rockers, with great hooks and melodies. Excellent sound and liner notes. I guarantee that if you're a sixties freak, hearing The Outsiders will be a revelatory experience for you.
You won't be able to get these masterpieces out of your cd player. The
tracks will sear their way into your
brain. Submitted by shadesofdeeppurple (Las Vegas, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
uitstekend muziek * * outstanding music, als u spreekt Nederlands
At the risk of angering the Ghost Of Wally Tax, I only give four stars. The band's evolution, as plays out on this album, seems to parallel that of Paul Revere & The Raiders: The hard-driving, raw garage sound from 1965-1966 in the first several tracks (that I so dearly love) gradually becomes studio-productionized as you listen on, until near the end a few of the horns-added numbers sound like they were lifted from a movie soundtrack. I don't sing along anymore. But the songs themselves are very creative in that singular Outsiders way. Choice. It is a sorry thing I missed ever seeing these fellows live; it is an even sorrier thing I missed them in their prime ... but such is the accident of birth. This compilation is such good company, though, that I bought one copy for the office, one for home, and one for travel, and I dubbed a tape to play in my car -- whatever fits my mood. (Oh, and just so Ghost Of Wally doesn't come twist my arm for that extra star, I will proclaim for all to read here, loud and proud: "Thinking About Today" IS my favorite song of all time.)
