From Director Dirk Schafer, whose "Man of the Year" pulled women's magazine centerfolds out of the closet, comes this sultry hyper-kinetic drama set in the sex-and-pecs, music and steroid world of the circuit party scene-where drugs flow and inhibitions fall on the sweaty dance floor. John is a closeted small-town cop who moves to L.A., where he is quickly seduced into a new lifestyle. As John falls deeper and deeper into a spiral of drugs and carousing, his one chance for redemption lies in the arms of his new boyfriend. After he's outed at his Midwestern precinct, gay cop John (Jonathan Wade Drahos) heads to Los Angeles to stay with his cousin Tad (Daniel Kucan), a documentary filmmaker chronicling the local gay scene. Naïve and closeted for a little too long, John only needs one little sniff and he's totally sucked into the world of "circuit" parties, drug-fueled gay raves full of steamy sex, thumping disco, steroid-amped bodies, and soap opera-style interpersonal drama. Soon his life is spiraling out of control and it's time to learn some valuable lessons.
Ex-Playgirl centerfold Dirk Shafer directs CIRCUIT from a script he wrote with producer Gregory Hinton. There's lots of drug use, vanity, angst, groping, and softcore sex (bed sheets and shadows mask total full frontal nudity). Kiersten Warren adds some estrogen and humor as John's college pal who has also come to L.A. to pursue her career as a stand-up comic. Jim J. Bullock (TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT) appears as a drag queen, William Katz and Nancy Allen are married party promoters caught up in a scam involving AIDS and life insurance. Many of the scenes were filmed at actual circuit parties (including the notorious "White Party"), with the attendees acting as extras. Theatrical Release: MAY 3, 2002 (NY) Circuit Reviews: "...Dirk Shafer's lively CIRCUIT is at once a sexy soap opera, at times lurid and bathetic, and also a gritty cautionary tale made by a filmmaker honest enough to have it both ways..."-- Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times "...It is often captivating and appropriately saddening..."

Circuit Movie Review Average Rating: (4.1 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Very powerful movie This movie was very well written, well directed, and the acting was great. It gives a blunt look at the party circuit. It acknowledges the excitement of it, the comraderie, and the intensity but it also shows the intense emptiness of it and the fact that a the circuit life of drug abuse goes nowhere. An honest portrait of the circuit! Circuit is a well made and honest look at gay circuit parties with all its excitement and pitfalls.
The characters are all well developed and the direction can't get better. This DVD includes the largest selection of deleted scenes I've seen in a DVD before that also gives the audience a glimpse of how complicated movie making can get at certain times.
Circuit is the best gay theme movie of the year! Submitted by a reviewer (Toa Alta, PR) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Circuit review
$18.85 This "big country" romance involves an emotionally stilted Manhattan artist named Henry (Ayre Gross) who returns to his Montana hometown of Big Eden when his grandfather takes ill. Drama instantly arises as Henry learns the boyhood best friend (Tim DeKay) on whom he's fostered a twenty-year-long unrequited crush, has also returned to Big Eden and is anxious to resume their friendship. Henry also comes into contact with Dexter (Eric Schweig), the Native American proprietor of a local general store. Quiet and withdrawn, Dexter finds himself attracted to Henry but expresses his interest solely through a progressively more elaborate series of home-cooked meals. It is interesting that though they are surrounded with love and support by the liberal locals, these gay men are still blocked from romantic fulfillment by their own doubts and fears. The supporting cast includes residents of Montana's Glacier Park region where the film was shot, and Academy Award winner ...

$19.35 This refreshingly offbeat film from Argentina follows a few days in the life of Marcia (Tatiana Saphir), an overweight girl working in a Buenos Aires lingerie shop, whose going-nowhere life is interrupted by a pair of sullen, lesbian wanderers named Mao (Carla Crespo) and Lenin (Veronica Hassan). Marcia accompanies them semi-unwillingly at knife point, as the three girls embark upon a directionless odyssey involving taxi-jacking, killer whales, sapphic sex, shoplifting, the beach, and a stay at the boarding house of Lenin's chain-smoking Aunt Blanca (Beatriz Thibaudin). It's an impressive debut for director Diego Luhrman, and a jewel in the Argentine New Wave crown. Shot in beautiful 16mm black and white, the film is sparingly, lovingly framed. Great sound and natural music--overheard from radios--substitutes for the film score, allowing emotions and feelings to manifest themselves organically. With its blend of deadpan hipness and a humanistic warmth that uses style and substance ...
