5 stars "blurred in time" little treasure
Actually, I'd rather file this album under NeoProg-HardRock moniker than Prog-Metal, because the entire mood and sound of the album has nothing in common with metal. Very melodic (excectly in HardRock manner - I bet you'll hear some Bon Jovi, Boston, Triumh passages...), very dinamic with clear vocal (sometimes voice of Drew reminds Axl Rose) and no-nonsence lyrics. It's real listening pleasure and one of the biggest pleasant discoveries (IMHO). Try it, it's really pity that the album seems to be "blurred in time"...

3 stars EARLY 80'S
VANDERHOOF HAS DEFINETELY DIVERSIFIED HIS WRITING. THE CD HAS AN EARLY 80'S FEEL AND TAKES SOME TIME GETTING USED TO. AT TIMES THE VOCALS DON'T SEEM TO FIT THE SONGS, BUT THE ACTUAL WRITING OF THE SONGS HAVE MUCH CREATIVITY. MY PERSONAL OPINION IS THE DEBUT VANDERHOOF BLEW ME AWAY AND THE SECOND IS A STEP DOWN. OVERALL IT IS A GOOD RECORDING AND WORTH HEARING SOMETHING DIFFERENT THAN THE RADIO GARBAGE OF TODAYS TIME.IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT AND UNEXPECTED, THIS IS A GOOD PLACE TO START.

4 stars A strong melodic rock disc.
That sadly, will probably go unnoticed. The songs are well written and well delivered. The keyboards add warmth to a style of music that can sometimes get stale when it's the same three instruments.

Recorded in 1977, 1980, 1996 and 1999. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. While the album's title is deceiving -- all but five of the 18 tracks on this double disc originate from the '90s, and 11 of those are from the same show -- this is an adequate, well-recorded document of both the original and re-formed versions of Foghat running through their established repertoire. It also works as a tribute to Lonesome Dave Peverett, the group's lead singer and primary songwriter, who died of cancer in February 2000, about a year after the most recent recording here. Since ...

Sur O No Sur
Kevin Johansen Sur O No Sur CD  (2003)

Blur In Time CD music
CD $9.05  4 stars Audio Samples
Quite an accomplishment, Kevin Johansen + the Nada's Sur o No Sur spans 20 tracks and innumerable ideas, resulting in one of the more interesting, creative, and eclectic Latin albums released by a major label during the early 2000s. Johansen sings, plays acoustic guitar, writes the songs, and fills the album with a wealth of witty wordplay. The guy lived in New York City for a decade, leaving the Big Apple for Buenos Aires after the recording of this album, so he's perfectly bilingual and shifts back and forth between Spanish, English, and Spanglish throughout Sur o No Sur. And not necessarily from one song to the next, either. Songs like "Star Estrella" find him flip-flopping between languages constantly, which can be fascinating if you enjoy such bilingual wordplay, especially when it's this witty. Johansen's wit extends beyond his wordplay to his music, also. Just as he plays with language and never ceases to surprise you with his usage, his songs are likewise playful. He and his band flip-flop musical styles the same way he does languages, from song to song certainly but sometimes also within the same song. This is a guy who purposefully circumvents convention, an act that is especially applicable to the often generic constraints of Latin music, with its laundry list of regional styles that often vary only on the basis of instrumentation, rhythm, or dance. So you get songs like "La Procesión," one of the album's most amazing moments: Johansen opens the song with an a cappella incantation of the Red Hot Chili Peppers ("Give it away, give it away, give it away now/Give it away, give it away, give it away now") before breaking into an energetic hybrid of flamenco and cumbia topped off by some beautiful singing in Spanish. And this is just one song among 20, some of the other more interesting ones including the title track, "Star Estrella," "Down With My Baby" (a really fun song Johansen accurately describes as "Barry White meets Nirvana"), "Cumbiera Intelectual" (a great showcase of wit), and a cover of Serge Gainbourg's "La Chanson de Prevert" (sung in French, no less!). Sur o No Sur is the sort of album that's so overflowing with ideas -- some of them more successful than others, granted -- it offers new revelations with each listen, and the more studied ...
Demanufacture
Fear Factory Demanufacture CDs  (1995) Bonus CD; Bonus Tracks; Reissue

Blur In Time music CDs
CD $17.89  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Not too many folks really took note at the time, but Fear Factory were really onto something with their 1992 debut album, Soul of a New Machine. Though it wasn't a beginning-to-end classic, it was an exceptional album and arguably ushered in the alternative metal era with its fusion of metal styles. When Fear Factory returned three years later with their follow-up, Demanufacture, the band's groundbreaking style of industrial- and death-informed metal came to fruition, and this time a great many folks did take note, resulting in one of the most successful metal releases of the '90s, commercially as well as artistically. On the surface, it almost seems like Demanufacture is a rewrite of Soul of a New Machine. Following a couple extreme side projects (i.e., Nailbomb, Brujeria), Fear Factory again flew in Earache Records production legend Colin Richardson, and again they fused together a number of elements characteristic of various metal subgenres. For instance, vocalist Burton C. Bell unleashes a ferocious death metal growl, yet he can also switch over to a Rob Halford-like vocal style when he wants to grace a given song with soaring melodic vocals for contrast. Moreover, guitarist Dino Cazares straddles the fence between industrial and death metal, as he ...

Bruce Radtke is a New Jersey based jazz guitarist and composer. He has gigged professionally in Boston, Los Angeles and NYC, and earned a B.A. from Boston’s Berklee College of Music. His last full-length solo CD is entitled Lifeline. Drawn to the music of Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton at the age of 8, Radtke picked up the guitar, learning to play songs by ear. Along the way, he got into an expanding range of influences - Clapton led to B.B.King and Muddy Waters and then to Robert Johnson. He attended a concert in the early 70's by the Mahavisnhu Orchestra and it was like a visit from another planet. ...
