Shaggy's sidekick breaks out for the second time in his career (his first solo effort, HEAR MY CRY, was released in 1995) with MY BAD, a solid set that blends hip-hop and reggae in equal measure. Rayvon has a lighter style than the throaty growl of his partner--at times recalling the delicate vibrato of Maxi Priest, who guested on Rayvon's HEAR MY CRY--which is most effective on the reggae-tinged cuts such as the title track and "Playboy Bunny," and most interesting when he manages a seamless reggae/hip-hop crossover such as "In the Wintertime" or a dancehall track such as "Do You Wanna Ride." Of the two pure reggae tracks here "Danger Zone" is a smooth, poppy exercise, while "English Pound" ("I saw this girl, so round like an English pound") is a fun throwback to classic '60s reggae style which hints that maybe Rayvon was born a decade too late.
Second solo album from Shaggy's sidekick. Includes one bonus track that is not available on the already US delted edition angel (Ft Shaggy) and 16/2 Way (video).

| | Leona Lewis Echo CD (2009)
My Bad
$11.18 The goal of Leona Lewis' 2007 debut, Spirit, was to prove that an X Factor winner could be a phenomenon not just in the U.K., but in the rest of the world. The goal of her second album, 2009's Echo, is to prove that success was no fluke, to build upon "Bleeding Love" and turn Lewis into an actual diva. Certainly, Echo in any of its incarnations -- its song listings are tailored for individual markets, with the U.K. getting a cover of Oasis' "Stop Crying Your Heart Out," while the U.S. gets a second song co-written by Justin Timberlake -- uses the chilly, synthesized "Bleeding Love" as its foundation, creating a sheet of sound equal parts Euro-pop and modern American R&B. As opposed to the often-stuffy Spirit, this is proudly modern, and if the sounds emanating from the two sides of the Atlantic might seem to be aesthetically opposed, they're both producer-driven music constructed layer by layer from rhythm to the vocal, where the overall sound ...

| | Aretha Franklin 30 Greatest Hits CDs (1985)
My Bad
$11.15 The title may not be 100-percent accurate, since the songs here are culled from Franklin's soul years, roughly between 1967 and 1974, and she's had lots more hits since then. That nit picked, however, this is a genuine embarrassment of riches, with Aretha's soaring voice and under-appreciated piano decorating one wonderful genre-defining song ("Respect," "Chain of Fools," "Natural Woman," "Since You've Been Gone") after another. The most revelatory cut is probably "I Say a Little Prayer," in which Franklin imbues the song with a spine-tingling gospel flavor without ever losing the pop delicacy of the original Dionne Warwick ...

| | Garnett Silk Silky Mood CD (1995)
My Bad
$9.69 This set's title is a bit misleading, especially if you presume that it's filled with rich romantic numbers; and although this ten-track compilation showcases many of Garnett Silk's moods, few could be described as silky. Released in 1996, amongst the flood of posthumous albums being unleashed in the aftermath of the singer's tragic death, this set is a decidedly mixed bag, emotionally and musically.
Six of the songs come courtesy of King Jammy, another pair were cut for E.J. Robinson, and there's one each from Top Ranks and Right Track. Point of entry for most fans will be the big hits "Fill Us Up with Your Mercy" and "Lord Watch Over Our Shoulder," both excellent cultural cuts for Jammy, while the equally stellar "Let Them Talk" unites the singer with Frankie Paul and Determine in praise of Jah. "Babylon Be Still" was also a much deserved hit, and producer Robinson used a variation of its rhythm for the angry "Cry of My People," where Silk tackles injustice.
