Or even -- my personal favorite -- "Rocking to the, rocking to the, rocking to the beat I, rocking to the rhythm of a groovy beat / Beat, beat, beat, beat, beat, beat, beat, beat, beat, beat, beat, beat, beat, beat, beat, beat." Music: carbonated dance jingles trying to cash in on all that hip "rave" culture. Think Casio beats, T2 keyboards, and fake crowd noises piped in at every break. Best song: "Fire." Like Pop Will Eat Itself at Nuremberg; an oddly catchy refrain of, "Back to the family, a guaranteed emergency, the radical MC HP's got the melody" is situated right next to a Motley Crue riff that growls like it's waiting for the school bell to ring. Released without the usual flurry of hype, Before I Self Destruct fulfills 50 Cent's contractual obligation to the Interscope label. It also doubles as a throwback album, returning the rapper to the hunger and hatred of his early mixtapes while skillfully recasting him as a wannabe upstart. That is, for the most part. I was lucky enough to get advance copies of the last 2 Fez Dispenser CDs. I enjoyed them both so my expectations were pretty high as I pulled 'Ant Rifle' out of the envelope.'Ant Rifle' beat my expectations by a mile. This is clearly a breakthrough CD for FD. There is an effortless quality to the new stuff. The addictive 'dig into your brain while you're not looking' effect has allways been there with FD; but Ant Rifle is on another level. Every single time I play this CD when other people are around someone asks "What are we listening to?" "Where did you find this?"I have a feeling I'll be listening to Ant Rifle for years.Jim Nelson *****************Fez Dispenser Is not: hip hop, acid-jazz, drum and bass, dance hall, dub, reggae, Trip-hop, lounge, 70's funk, jungle, blues or jazz. It does combine elements of all of those styles without making your brain hurt. Chances are, if you've been hanging out with anyone under 5 feet tall, you've heard producer Matthew Thorne's work. By day he works in a recording studio inside a toy design center in El Segundo CA. So if your kids are playing with a plastic, talking cowboy who strums a guitar, this guy made him play.
