$18.79 Two different bands have all of their output reissued on this CD. The first dozen selections are by the Arcadia Peacock Orchestra of St. Louis, a pretty decent hot jazz dance band from 1924-1925. None of the sidemen became famous (best known is trumpeter Bob Pope), but the band fares well and on two numbers offers fine support to singer Sophie Tucker. However, the real reason to acquire this disc is for the 14 selections by the Arcadian Serenaders (including two cuts made as the Original Crescent City Jazzers). Originally a New Orleans septet with cornetist Sterling Bose, the music moved to St. Louis, where the band was renamed the Arcadian Serenaders. The November 29, 1924, session has Wingy Manone making ...
| | Goofus Five 1924-25 CD (2002)
Recorded In New York songs
$13.79 As the 1990s drew to a close, Timeless Historical reissued a large number of recordings from the '20s and '30s by musicians both legendary and obscure, in a series coordinated by seasoned specialists Chris Barber, John R.T. Davies, and Brian Rust. One fascinating aspect of this label's catalog is an interconnected web of bands that all lead back to the California Ramblers, a Midwestern group which was among the most prolific studio ensembles of the '20s. While the full-sized Ramblers recorded for various labels as the Golden Gate Orchestra, the Varsity Eight, the University Six, and the Vagabonds, a scaled-down version of the band made records for Columbia as the Little Ramblers, for Pathe as the Five Birmingham Babies, and for Okeh, Odeon, and Parlophone as the Goofus Five. The instrument that gave the latter group its name was patented in France as a saxophone ...

| | Jack Teagarden 1930 Studio Sessions CD (2006)
Recorded In New York CD music
$16.49 In 2006, the Jazz Oracle label released a thrilling 25-track collection of recordings that document JAck Teagarden's professional activity during the first grueling months of the Great Depression. Unlike his collaborations with Eddie Condon, these records do not necessarily spotlight Teagarden as soloist or vocalist. 1930 was a banner year in the golden age of squeaky clean crooners and pop vocalists. The music is deliciously dated and heavily arranged, with an innocent charm that is peculiarly reassuring. Vocals are perpetrated by Smith Ballew, Irving Kaufman, Paul Small, and Artie Dunn, who ...
| | TJ Kirk Talking Only Makes It Worse CD (2005)
Recorded In New York music CDs
$10.49 Although it is not noted on the outside cover and is even difficult to discern from the inside liner notes, this is a live recording of the short-lived group, caught at a show at an unnamed venue in 1997. Regardless of the rather mysterious nature of the disc, it's a terrific representation of the foursome's phenomenal instrumental chops. The triple guitar/drums lineup cherry-picks tracks from their studio albums, both of which are out of print as of this disc's appearance in early 2004. Hence, it's the only way to hear this adventurous quartet ...

| | Indivisible Squalor Of Wilderness Pangs CD (2007)
Recorded In New York music CDs
$10.15 Stuck in a land of swamp-pop and frat-rock, where indie-pop is considered revolutionary, Wilderness Pangs sticks out like a sore thumb painted purple and emanating radioactive luminescence.Despite their inherent weirdness and intentional abandonment of the rules, Wilderness Pangs actually consider themselves a pop band. Albeit a pop band from a mysterious forest on an alien planet. The group started as a home-recording project between long-time pals Brandon White and Randy Faucheux in 2003. The early music of Wilderness Pangs was borne out of much personal turmoil. Despite this, the music was never melodramatic or whiny. Far from it, the music was always playful, absurd, and surreal. ...
