On the surface, this release is a cheeky attempt to cash in on Mathers' infamy. But Lounge Tribute to Eminem just might be the ultimate signifier of how truly ensconced Marshall Mathers has become in the hearts, minds, and wallets of suburban America. While Will Smith's milquetoast raps made him a household hip-hop star whose music was safe for wedding receptions, Eminem's visceral, unflinching songs held a mirror up to society, and then put a boot through it. For as much controversy as the latter has garnered, he's still the only one to have his music transformed into hokey dinner music. And that fact just might make Lounge Tribute to Eminem as important an album as those of its titular star. That said, "the Lounge Brigade" -- relative unknowns who seem to be listed under fake names in the liner notes -- might have done a better job with the nine Eminem originals that appear on the tribute. While they don't shy away from the cursing, misogyny, and boasting of the originals, their arrangements are often weak, and the cheesy vocal delivery (think Bill Murray as Nick Winters on Saturday Night Live) gets tired very quickly. "The Real Slim Shady" is a standout; in its slowed down form, the song's lyrical couplets are even more caustic and hilarious. The snide, unflattering Frank Sinatra impersonations of "My Name Is" and "Without Me" are good for a laugh, but are actually impersonating Joe Piscopo impersonating Sinatra. It's flaws like this that make Lounge Tribute to Eminem a disappointment, even as its very existence makes it essential from a popular culture standpoint. ~ Johnny Loftus

Lounge Tribute To Eminem
CD $8.78  SALE 5 stars Top 100 Audio Samples
Melanie Fiona's debut single, "Give It to Me Right," was a perfect 2009 pop-R&B recording. The single coupled a timeless classic (the Zombies' "Time of the Season") with roof-raising vocals and infectious pop hooks that stuck like peanut butter. Fiona's single was perfect, albeit a touch formulaic. Because of this, it's no surprise that a large chunk of her debut album, THE BRIDGE, is much of the same. Like any good 2009 pop-soul recording, the album offers influences from decades of soul music. Fiona, a Kanye West protégé, collaborates with about as many styles of music as she has producers and writers, who include most prominently Canadian R&B singer-songwriter Andrea Martin, Rob Fusari, Peter Wade Keusch, Sidh Solanki, Vada Nobles, Bill Blast, Future Cut, Stereotypes, Dan Strong, ...

Lounge Tribute To Eminem

Released without the usual flurry of hype, Before I Self Destruct fulfills 50 Cent's contractual obligation to the Interscope label. It also doubles as a throwback album, returning the rapper to the hunger and hatred of his early mixtapes while skillfully recasting him as a wannabe upstart. That is, for the most part. The four radio-friendly bedroom numbers that conclude the album are out of place but fairly good to dime-piece beautiful, with the best being the Ne-Yo showcase "Baby by Me" ("Have a baby by me, baby/Be a millionaire"). As pleasing as these final numbers are, if you leave the room after the macho bruiser "I Got Swag" ("I'm infinitely special/Girl the Lord is gonna bless you/If you do what I tell you to do"), you'll return to a confusingly different album, one that's as glamorous but less vital. The monstrous run of tracks that leads up to this flash and polish can be summed up by 50's "This ain't Tha Carter/It's Sparta!," a witty, deceptive, and brutish line barked over a prime Dr. Dre beat during the great "Death to My Enemies." On the cut, the producer sounds like he's been digging on RZA, but the tension and dark-night feel he has created for "Psycho" is easily identifiable as Dre. Add an especially ...

For anyone who tends to snicker derisively whenever they hear bands like Blink-182 described as punk, the Fleshies are for you. This Oakland quartet conjures up the gleefully unpolished spirit of punk rock ghosts past, with slashing guitars, furious rhythms, and screaming vocals so vitriolic they make Billie Joe Armstrong sound like freakin' Johnny Mathis. With an aggro sound loud enough to peel paint off the walls and lyrics that run the gamut from the moronic ...

Additional personnel includes: Carl Severson, Steev Esquivel (background vocals). It's quite uncommon to hear a band hailing from Alaska, yet after hearing 36 Crazy Fists, one can only hope more intriguing metalcore spawns from the area. Bitterness the Star is a thoroughly infectious morsel, and while it may first feel a bit abrasive to the listener's ears, repeat plays will surely hook you with extremely groovy thrash metal. Frontman Brock Lindow's unusual vocal quiver may fool you into believing he can't actually sing, yet in reality Bitterness the Star is full of incredibly emotional singing, as displayed on "Two Months From a Year." The quiver helps 36 Crazy Fists stand out in a sea of faceless nu-metal acts, and Lindow often comes off sounding similar to the likes of Glassjaw's Daryl Palumbo or SpineShank's Johnny Santos. Lindow's strong emphasis on vocal hooks firmly plants roots in the listener's brain, and with well-written lyrics one can find themselves singing passages from 36 Crazy Fists' wealth of material quite some time after listening to the album. Carl Severson from hardcore devotees Nora appears on "One More Word," and his outlandish scream intensifies the song quite well. Skinlab's Steev Esquivel also lends his vocal talents to "Bury Me Where I Fall" and helps morph 36 Crazy Fists into a violent heavy metal battering ram of sound. Musically, 36 Crazy Fists are fairly original, and while they may not exactly astonish anyone with their ability, Steve Holt's guitar playing ...
