| | Michael Pagan Nobody Else But Me CD Michael Pagan Discography of CDs
This solo piano release is Michael Pagan's first CD for Capri. His command of the keyboard has been said to be akin to Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum, with references to Horace Silver, Bill Evans and McCoy Tyner. Add to those his other admitted influences
Personnel: Michael Pagan (piano). Liner Note Author: Wayne Scott. Recording information: Colorado Sound Studios, Westminster, CO (06/2000-09/2000). An excellent jazz pianist, Michael Pagan is in top form throughout this solo date. A modern mainstream player, Pagan hints at Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, George Shearing and even Art Tatum in spots but essentially sounds like himself. He is lyrical on ballads (his rendition of "There'll Be Another Spring" is touching), swings hard on the more uptempo tunes and includes modern jazz songs from Enrico Pieranunzi, Kenny Wheeler and Steve Swallow in his repertoire. Although not too well known, Michael Pagan deserves recognition as a superior jazz pianist on the level of a Bill Charlap. ~ Scott Yanow

Nobody Else But Me
$14.69 Audio Mixer: Todd Whitelock. Photographer: Raj Naik. Detroit comprises a six-composition suite commissioned for the 2009 thirtieth anniversary Detroit International Jazz Festival, played in the studio with musicians from composer/arranger Gerald Wilson's Los Angeles home or New York City area. Curiously, there are no Motor City-based players on the disc, but the themes are based in certain locales from the industrial Midwestern City that has fallen on hard economic times but played a pivotal role in the development of Wilson's highly developed skills as a composer, arranger, and bandleader. A quite spirited and energetic music is heard here from the 90-year-old Wilson, whose charm and wit would rival anyone many decades his junior. It's a swinging affair molded in the traditional big-band visage of Count Basie, Ernie Wilkins, or early Quincy Jones, with Wilson's deft touch for embellishing the blues. Players like trumpeter Sean Jones, son/guitarist Anthony Wilson, violinist Yvette Devereaux, the fine pianist Brian O'Rourke, and particularly L.A. alto saxophonist and flutist Randall Willis or Kamasi Washington on tenor sax, spice up the band's ensemble and solo contributions. The suite begins with "Blues ...

| | Marc Copland Night Whispers New York Trio Recordings: Volume 3 CD (2009) (Import) Germany
Nobody Else But Me
$16.09 Personnel: Marc Copland (piano); Drew Gress (bass instrument); Bill Stewart (drums). From Erroll Garner to Cecil Taylor to Bill Evans, and from Chick Corea to Thelonious Monk, a wide variety of acoustic jazz pianists have thrived in the time-honored piano trio setting (piano, bass, and drums) over the years. It's a setting that has never gone out of style in jazz, and it's a setting that has served acoustic pianist Marc Copland well in his New York Trio Recordings series. The lineup has varied from one volume to the next; on New York Trio Recordings, Vol. 3: Night Whispers, Copland is joined by bassist Drew Gress and drummer Bill Stewart (whereas he was joined by bassist Gary Peacock and Stewart on Vol. 1 and by Peacock and drummer Paul Motian on Vol. 2). The constant in the series, of course, has been Copland, who is in good form throughout this 2008 recording and enjoys a nice rapport with Gress and Stewart. Copland obviously enjoys the role of acoustic trio pianist, and his enthusiasm is evident on three Copland originals ("Scattered Leaves," "The Bell Tolls," and the title track) as well as on impressionistic performances ...
