On The Beam album
$12.29 Recorded between 1949 & 1953. Originally released on RCA (3025), RCA (3058) & RCA (3065). Includes liner notes by Robert W. Rice.
By means of this discount-priced compilation, it is possible to trace Eddie Fisher's triumphs on the album charts in 1952, the year of his greatest popularity. (This is not, however, the same thing as tracing his equal success on the singles charts. In the 1950s, record companies usually did not include singles on albums, but treated the two formats as entirely separate entities.) All three of the eight-song, 10" LPs he released in 1952 are combined on this disc. When Fisher began to hit consistently, RCA threw together his first album, Eddie Fisher Sings, mostly out of previously rejected tracks he had cut dating back to 1949. By the time of his second album, I'm in the Mood for Love, the label was aiming seriously at the LP market and had him record new arrangements of old standards. Then, inevitably, came a Christmas album. (The CD concludes ...
| | Eddie Fisher May I Sing To You/As Long As There's Music CD (2002)
On The Beam CD music
$13.39 Recorded between 1953 & 1958. Originally released on RCA (3185) & RCA (1647). Includes liner notes by Robert W. Rice.
This discount-priced two-fer reissue combines two quite different Eddie Fisher albums from the 1950s. May I Sing to You, made when most LPs were only ten inches in diameter and containing only eight tracks, was Fisher's album for 1954. (Primarily a singles artist, he only recorded one a year for most of the '50s.) It was subtitled "Eddie Fisher Salutes Some of the Great Singers of Our Time," and on it he took on the signature songs of seven male singers who had preceded him. At the time, it was not the greatest idea for a song collection, since those tunes remained identified with those other singers even after the brash 25-year-old had sung them. In 2002, when Tony Martin was not well remembered for "Begin the Beguine" and Bing Crosby's theme song, "Where the Blue of the Night Meets the Gold of the Day," has not turned out to be a timeless standard, Fisher's renditions of such material seem less like appropriations. Four years later, at the end of his RCA contract, he cut As Long As There's Music, an album ...
| | Charlie Spivak Okeh And Columbia Years, 1941-1942 CD (2002)
On The Beam music CDs
$11.75 Coming along halfway through the swing era, Charlie Spivak's big band managed to rank among the top ten orchestras of the early '40s. That Spivak never broke into the top five, occupied by the likes of Glenn Miller, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Harry James, and Benny Goodman, had to do with timing -- all of them had preceded him -- but also with his musical approach. Spivak got his shot at leading an orchestra because he was so respected as a hot trumpeter, but when he organized a band he usually stuck a mute in his horn and aimed for a smooth style not unlike the sound of Tommy Dorsey's trombone. Indeed, he seemed to pattern his band on that of the younger Dorsey, similarly attempting to straddle the hot and sweet strains of swing. When he did play his trumpet open, he reminded a lot of listeners of James (though some found his tone purer). As a result, his legacy has been compromised, and there have been few ...

Frank Sinatra's studio recordings have been collected in comprehensive box sets issued by the various record labels for which he recorded (RCA Victor [when he was a singer in Tommy Dorsey's orchestra], Columbia, Capitol, and Reprise) and there have also been multi-disc collections of his V-Disc recordings and radio shows. That leaves his work in television and film, ...
