Greatest Hits CD (2000) Top Seller
Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors album for sale Normally, greatest hits packages include a few new tracks as bait for longtime fans who already own every CD by the artist. Tim McGraw's GREATEST HITS collection isn't one of those, but it is the perfect place to start for the casual fan who's heard and enjoyed McGraw's songs on the radio. GREATEST HITS does an admirable job of collecting McGraw's biggest successes since his 1994 breakthrough with the very politically incorrect single "Indian Outlaw."
The artist's hits usually fall into two categories--rockin' country rave-ups, and tender ballads. The best are collected here: the reach-for-the-Kleenex weeper "Don't Take the Girl," the goofy Mexicana of "Refried Dreams," the rowdy live favorites "Down on the Farm" and "I Like It, I Love It," and the sensuous, slow-burning "It's Your Love," one of two duets with McGraw's wife, Faith Hill. McGraw's later singles show a marked artistic growth, as evidenced by the sweeping, majestic "Please Remember Me," and the introspective "My Next Thirty Years." Two of McGraw's finest singles--"Everywhere" and "One of These Days"--are inexplicably missing, but GREATEST HITS is still a fine purchase for the fan who wants to beef up his or her country music collection.

UP! marks Shania Twain's emergence from a five-year hiatus that found her absconding to Switzerland and having a child with husband/producer/collaborator Robert "Mutt" Lange. As ever, Twain continues to be the master of the pop crossover. This time around, she takes 19 songs presents two different versions of each, divided between a pair of discs. CD 1 (the "Red CD") features more rock-flavored versions as opposed to CD2 (the "Green CD"), which includes considerably more pedal steel guitar et al.
Regardless of the genre, Twain and Lange continue to make a formidable pop-writing team. The two manage to craft catchy cuts on topics ranging from mundane situations in a relationship like who's behind the wheel (the sassy "In My Car [I'll Be The Driver]") to weightier fare like rampant materialism (a mechanized "Ka-Ching!") and female empowerment (the soaring "She's Not Just A Pretty Face"). Otherwise, Twain tills the fertile nuances of romance via convincing balladry that touches on dalliances with the green-eyed devil (a heartfelt "I'm Jealous") and rock-solid pledge

Live Like You Were Dying CD (2004) Top Seller
Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors songs Country superstar Tim McGraw surely needs no apologists; the Louisiana-born singer, who's racked up millions of record sales and married country diva Faith Hill, is practically a force of nature. However, there is a misconception of McGraw as just a high-gloss hat act, a notion that a close listen to LIVE LIKE YOU WERE DYING should dispel.
For one thing, while almost all of his peers record with the same pool of Nashville studio hotshots, McGraw continues to work with his longtime band, the Dancehall Doctors. Additionally, progressive-country cult heroes Bruce Robison and Rodney Crowell are among the songwriters tapped for material here. Most importantly, at a time when most mainstream country artists are compelled to pander to their audience by maintaining a "don't worry, be happy" attitude, McGraw isn't afraid to journey into darker emotional territory, often with no clear way out--see the heartbreaking "Blank Sheet of Paper," and "Open Season on My Heart." The latter song is surely one of the most powerful pieces to be found on a circa-2004 hit country album, and even though Crowell penned it (with James T. Slater), you can thank Tim McGraw for bringing it to the light of day.

Rascal Flatts Melt CD (2002)
Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors CD music In the photos accompanying MELT, the members of Rascal Flatts are styled in the manner of typical grunge rockers, complete with goatees, ripped jeans, worn leather jackets, and dour grimaces. Fans need not be worried, though--the group still delivers super-shiny Nashville pop, albeit with a slightly more "adult" lyrical edge than on their self-titled debut. This time around, the songs seem custom-tailored not for teens, but for the George Bush Jr. generation--a young, sophisticated, globally aware, rural middle class more apt to be chatting on-line than downing Lone Stars in the back of a pickup.
In other words, the band makes a concerted effort to match its sublimely catchy melodies with down-to-earth tales of modern grown-up life. Though MELT's highly polished jingle-esqe production occasionally obscures the songs' emotional impact, the resulting album succeeds on it's own terms; it's as perfectly poppy and slick as the best of Britney Spears, yet significantly more substantial.

Set This Circus Down CD (2001) Top Seller
Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors buy CD music SET THIS CIRCUS DOWN was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Country Album. "Grown Men Don't Cry" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.
Don't hate Tim McGraw because he's married to one of the most glamorous women in contemporary country music (Faith Hill). Don't hate him because he wears a ten-gallon hat and sings about "The Cowboy In Me" while utilizing more image consultants than a Vogue fashion shoot. Hate him because he's so damn good at what he does. Whether you're an old-school country traditionalist or a card-carrying McGraw disciple, you can't deny the seamless production, hook-filled songcraft, and flawless vocal and instrumental performances that make up SET THIS CIRCUS DOWN. As on previous efforts, McGraw amiably combines country convention with pop-rock production. From the widescreen nostalgia of "Telluride" to the acoustic guitar-based ballad "Angry all the Time," CIRCUS handily picks up where 1999's A PLACE IN THE SUN left off. If you're overtaken by one of these songs on your car radio one day, we dare you not to sing along.

Kenny Chesney No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems CD (2002)
Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors songs Sometimes a picture really is worth a thousand words. Take for example the photo from the inner booklet of NO SHOES, NO SHIRT, NO PROBLEMS that features contemporary country star Kenny Chesney resplendent in cowboy hat and tie-dye T-shirt emblazoned with a Beatles lyric. That one image tells you a lot about Chesney's music. Though he's got the requisite amount of twang a la his Nashville contemporaries, he has an undeniable pop-rock sensibility as well. You can hear it in everything from the classic pop "whoo-hooh" background vocals on the opening track "Young" to the crunchy guitars on "Live those Songs," which also happens to make reference to Creedence Clearwater Revival, Buddy Holly, and Otis Redding. For those who hadn't already gotten the crossover message, it's hammered home still further by an album-closing (if you don't count the bonus track) take on Bruce Springsteen's TUNNEL OF LOVE ballad "One Step Up."
