(4 Customer Reviews)
With 30 albums to her credit in the Middle East, Samira Saeed is a certified superstar there, and this, her debut American release, gives the west a chance to discover her. It's actually a total makeover for the Moroccan-born superstar who's made her home in Egypt for over 20 years, not just in her look, but also in her music. And the result? Well, if the idea of '80s electro taken to Egypt appeals to you, you'll be a happy bunny. The title cut pairs her with rai star Cheb Mami for an appealing piece of music, but from there it's largely downhill. "Ezzay Aheb" has hip-hop overtones; "Dahakteni" works at updating the sound of Arab traditional (i.e., classical) music, with mixed results; while "Ehsasi" is the kind of emotional ballad (with massed female voices soft in the background) that's best suited for Celine Dion. A big part of the problem throughout is that Saeed simply doesn't have a distinctive voice. She can sing well enough, but you'd be hard-pressed to pick out her voice from a thousand others. And the material? Perhaps it plays well in Cairo, but in the U.S. it's just not going to cut it. Add to that liner notes where only the song titles (and lyrics to one song that doesn't appear to even be on the disc) are in English, and you're not exactly being consumer-friendly -- an ideal way to shoot yourself in the foot. ~ Chris Nickson

| | Jamshied Sharifi Prayer For The Soul Of Layla CD (1997)
Youm Wara Youm music CDs
$13.15 Dark and sensual, A PRAYER FOR THE SOUL OF LAYLA is a trip into the Middle East with a knowledgeable guide, Jamshied Sharifi. The Iranian-American keyboardist was born in Kansas City and studied American jazz before turning his interests to the music he learned from his father. With A PRAYER FOR THE SOUL OF LAYLA, Sharifi creates a singular fusion of Arabesque themes with a contemporary New Age sound that results in a beautiful, provocative recording. Sharifi works magic to coax organic, natural sounds from his synthesizers, and has invited some stellar world fusion artists into the studio to flesh out his sound. Hassan Hakmoun contributes some unworldly vocalizing to the albums first track, "Tariqat," which also features his sintir, a three-stringed bass lute from West Africa. "Ammeh Kimia " is the recording's standout track, with pop superstar Paula Cole performing an expressive vocal wail that complements gorgeous bedouin harp playing. Impeccably produced, every nuance and note of the authentic instruments can be appreciated. ...
| | Hakim Talakik CD (2002)
Youm Wara Youm songs
$7.79 Hakim's third Western outing, following hard in the footsteps of his live album, is definitely a mixed bag. The tracks rooted in his native Egyptian sha'bi, like "El Salam" and "El Kalam Da Kebir," sizzle, while "Ya' Maya" is a track that takes him to the next level, with its stunning fusion of sha'bi rhythms and Egyptian classical music under a lyrical tale of hidden homesickness. And "Ya Albi," co-produced by Machete and Narada Michael Walden, uses a near-reggae beat to bring together the voices of Hakim and merengue star Olga Tanon, with some thick bass and an excellent Spanish rap from Kemo of Delinquent Habits. So far so good -- and the majority of the record is excellent. The problem comes when Walden has sole control of the board. He has his schtick, and it works well for him. The problem is, it wasn't made for Hakim, making tracks like "Feelin' Good" and "Aho Aho" into lightweight froth that diminishes the overall impact of the record and ruins its overall feel and continuity. Hakim remains a rising star, but for his own sake he needs to stay away from Walden in future. ~ Chris Nickson

THUNDER AND LIGHTNING is a nine track, 1983 recording by hard rockers Thin Lizzy featuring "Thunder And Lightning," "Sun Goes Down," and "Bad Habits."
Thin Lizzy's final studio release, Thunder and Lightning, was their most consistent album since 1979's Black Rose. Guitarist John Sykes replaced Snowy White, and the new blood must have inspired Lynott and company to write some of their best compositions in years. Although a pop-metal production hinders the tracks, there's more of a harder edge present than on their last release, Renegade. While the title track served as the ensuing tour's raging opener, half-baked lyrics detailing a fistfight and an unwarranted synth-solo weakens what should have been a straight-ahead rocker. But such heavies as "This Is the One" and "Cold Sweat" suit the band much better. Lizzy takes a stab at dance-rock with "The Holy War," while laying back with the tranquil "The Sun Goes Down" and the album's underrated highlight, the melodic "Bad Habits." Like Lizzy's other '80s releases, filler is present -- "Someday She Is Going to Hit Back" and "Heart Attack" and disappointingly, guitarist Scott Gorham abandons ...
