If you have a taste for Middle Eastern pop, then Nawal Al Zoghbi will be right up your street. To be fair, it's largely cookie-cutter stuff (although the flamenco-inflected "Malak Alaya Yamine" breaks the mold somewhat), with the typical sheen of strings on the songs. She has a decent, if not exceptional, voice that works with the dated electro-pop that flavors many of the songs, such as the title track and "Yana Yana." The question is, can this work in the U.S. as anything more than a curiosity? Probably not, as there's very little that's distinctive about the album, or about Al Zoghbi, certainly not in a country that expects so much personality from its stars. But if she keeps this up, she'll be ready for the Laura Branigan revival. ~ Chris Nickson

Ellitmane Toh
$7.79 Hakim's third Western outing, following hard in the footsteps of his live album, is definitely a mixed bag. The tracks rooted in his native Egyptian sha'bi, like "El Salam" and "El Kalam Da Kebir," sizzle, while "Ya' Maya" is a track that takes him to the next level, with its stunning fusion of sha'bi rhythms and Egyptian classical music under a lyrical tale of hidden homesickness. And "Ya Albi," co-produced by Machete and Narada Michael Walden, uses a near-reggae beat to bring together the voices of Hakim and merengue star Olga Tanon, with some thick bass and an excellent Spanish rap from Kemo of Delinquent Habits. So far so good -- and the majority of the record is excellent. The problem comes when Walden has sole control of the board. He has his schtick, and it works well for him. The problem is, it wasn't made for Hakim, making ...

| | Natacha Atlas Something Dangerous CD (2003)
Ellitmane Toh
$13.89 Natacha Atlas' Something Dangerous is a bit slicker than her last, lightening up the beats and sexy intensity of Ayeshteni for more radio-friendly pop electronics, occasional vocal harmonies reminiscent of Destiny's Child, and lots of guests. Not that you could tell from the first cut, the gorgeous "Adam's Lullaby," on which she's backed by a gently playing Prague Symphony Orchestra string section. After this peaceful opener, the pace picks up with the dancehall-style "Eye of the Duck," featuring fellow Transglobal Underground member Tuup. Then the title cut gets a little funky while Atlas trades off vocal duties with the rapping Princess Julianna. A little later, Atlas takes on "Man's World." While her voice is lovely for it, the cover ...
