Up The Bracket
$19.10 Essentially a harder-rocking reprise of Every Picture Tells a Story, Never a Dull Moment never quite reaches the heights of its predecessor, but it's a wonderful, multi-faceted record in its own right. Opening with the touching, autobiographical rocker "True Blue," which finds Rod Stewart trying to come to grips with his newfound stardom but concluding that he'd "rather be back home," the record is the last of Stewart's series of epic fusions of hard rock and folk. It's possible to hear Stewart go for superstardom with the hard-rocking kick and fat electric guitars of the album, but the songs still cut to the core. "You Wear It Well" is a "Maggie May" rewrite on the surface, but it develops into a touching song about being emotionally inarticulate. Similarly, "Lost Paraguayos" is funny, driving folk-rock, and it's hard not to be swept away when the Stonesy hard rocker "Italian Girls" soars into a mandolin-driven coda. The covers -- whether a soulful reading of Jimi Hendrix's "Angel," an empathetic version of Dylan's "Mama, You Been on My Mind," or a stunning interpretation of Etta James' "I'd Rather Go Blind" -- are equally effective, making Never a Dull Moment a masterful record. He never got quite this good ever again. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine NEVER A DULL MOMENT picks up where EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY left off. Here we have more raucous rock & roll with healthy dollops ...

| | Halford III: Winter Songs CD (2009) Special Edition; Digipak
Up The Bracket
$13.58 Personnel: Rob Halford (vocals); Mike Chlasciak (guitar); Ed Roth (keyboards); Bobby Jarzombek (drums). Audio Mixer: Pete Martinez. Arrangers: Rob Halford; Ed Roth. At first glance, Halford's entry into the crowded holiday market looks like a parody. Heavy metal and Christmas make for strange bedfellows, and WINTER SONGS' pastoral cover art -- which depicts Rob Halford staring wistfully (with a goatee and shades) into a soft, snowy pine forest -- screams Spinal Tap. That said, the Judas Priest frontman approaches yuletide standards like "We Three Kings" and "What Child Is This?" with the same conviction that he applied to Priest classics like "Electric Eye" and "Freewheel Burning" ...

Up The Bracket
$15.85 ONE LOVE is a five-track release by pop vocal quartet Blue that includes three versions of "One Love," and the tracks "Get Ready" and "Best In Me." Japanese release. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Blue returned to the charts with their second release, One Love, and this time it didn't take six months to reach number one but topped the chart the week after its release. The album had been preceded by yet another up-tempo R&B song, the title track, and before that was cold their third number one single had arrived in the shape of "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word." Yet that song, to which they added a prominent beat and some harmonies to the verses, seemed to lend credence to their version; there was even a guest appearance by the song's originator, Elton John. "Riders" and "Flexin" were mid-tempo urban dance R&B tracks, and "Ain't Got You" was a chugging rhythmic series of urban sounds, complete with occasional "uhs" and other assorted interjections, while "Supersexual" even sampled the piano backing from "Still Dre." The verse of "She Told Me" sounded like a cross between R. Kelly and Craig David, but then the smooth harmony chorus breaks in and it's another Blue track. The same could be said for "U Make Me Wanna," which vocally ...
