Veronica
$11.99 This is the 1957 debut album by jazz singer and pianist Nina Simone, featuring "My Baby Just Cares For Me." British remaster. Nina Simone's first official album, 1958's Jazz as Played in an Exclusive Side Street Club, is pure perfection, an amazing accomplishment for a 24-year-old pianist arranging and singing studio renditions of songs from her live set. Captured here are moments of intrigue, as Simone magically takes the listener through musical caverns that want to be explored again with repeated spins. The rendition of "Plain Gold Ring" is exotic and draws the listener back, just as the Richard Rodgers/Lorenz Hart classic "Little Girl Blue" (the alternate title of the album stamped on the label of the vinyl as well as on the back cover) is a gorgeous work of art, Simone adding the melody from the traditional "Good King Wenceslas" to the standard Janis Joplin would bring to rock audiences a decade later. The cover photograph of the artist on a park bench in Central Park is a play ...
| | Mike Stern Who Let The Cats Out? CD (2006)
Veronica
$10.45 Personnel: Mike Stern (guitar, acoustic guitar); Mike Stern; Richard Bona (vocals, bass guitar); Gregoire Maret (harmonica); Bob Franceschini (saxophone); Chris Minh Doky (acoustic bass, upright bass); Me'Shell Ndegéocello, Anthony Jackson, Victor Wooten (bass guitar); Kim Thompson (drums); Roy Hargrove (trumpet); Dave Weckl (drums). Liner Note Author: Bill Milkowski. Photographer: Paul Greco. The veteran jazz fusion guitarist Mike Stern is joined by an all-star cast, including the trumpeter Roy Hargrove, the bassist Me'Shell NdegeOcello, and the drummer Dave Weckl, on a collection of instrumental workouts that includes the hard-driving "Tumble Home," the memorably pretty "Language," and the dexterous post-bop of the title track. More than two decades into his solo career, Mike Stern, on his 13th album as a leader, continues to prove why he's earned so many "Best Jazz Guitarist" honors through the years. Stern's skills are undeniable, and new ideas never fail to materialize when he's at work. But what makes Stern stand out from the pack of virtuosic guitar technicians is that he always insists on letting his, and his support team's, abilities serve the music, not vice versa. On Who Let the Cats Out?, Stern and his well-chosen crew spill out lick upon impressive lick, but they never get so carried away with themselves that they lose sight of the tune's purpose and structure. Grandiosity is never a factor here, although there are dozens of occasions to applaud these musicians' chops. Richard Bona, the Cameroonian bassist, has worked with Stern before, but here he is given an expanded role, appearing on four tracks and contributing his falsetto-style, scat-like vocals to three of them: On "All You Need," one of the prettiest tracks on the record, Bona provides an uplifting sensuality. He also shines on "We're with You," a ballad featuring Stern on acoustic guitar. Devoid of pyrotechnics, this song of support to those hurting utilizes synth-derived orchestration and a mournful, quiet tone to bring home its emotionalism. Drummer ...

Veronica
$25.99 Lyricist: Mark Hunter. Personnel: Mark Hunter (vocals); Rob Arnold (guitar); Chris Spicuzza (keyboards, electronics); Andols Herrick (drums). Photographers: Robert Dobi; Todd Bell. Continuing the arc they established on CHIMAIRA and RESURRECTION, Cleveland sextet Chimaira hone their Pantera-meets-Hatebreed approach with brutal, straightforward metalcore. Erasing any lingering associations with the late '90s nu metal scene they were unfairly lumped in with in their early days, the band deliver nine epics replete with monster riffs, pummeling double bass drums, and guttural vocals on ...
