| | Chris Stamey Travels In The South CD (2004)
Big Techno Werewolves album
$13.75 A founding leader of the influential cult band the dB's, Chris Stamey has spent most of last 15 years producing other people's discs (Alejandro Escovedo, Yo La Tengo, Whiskeytown) rather than creating his own. Not counting a 1995 instrumental album, Travels in the South marks his first record since 1991, when he released both the solo Fireworks and Mavericks, a duet disc with his old dB's partner Peter Holsapple. South, however, shows little sign of rustiness. The album kicks off with the glorious "14 Shades of Green," a chimey gem that takes a nostalgic look at a hometown. This leadoff track also establishes the theme of traveling that runs through the disc. Songs like "Insomnia," "Ride," and the title track all touch upon the feeling of life in transit. The sublime "In Spanish Harlem" takes a Paul Simon-esque look at New York City but with a decidedly eased-back Southern tempo. The entire album, in fact, rides along at a leisurely pace, with ...

| | Cal Tjader Black Hawk Nights CD (2000)
Big Techno Werewolves music CDs
$9.79 Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (2000, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Recorded live at the Black Hawk, San Francisco, California in December 1958. Originally released on Fantasy (3283).
Recorded live at the Black Hawk, San Francisco, California in 1959. Originally released on Fantasy (3315).
In the late '50s, Cal Tjader and his bands played lengthy engagements at the Black Hawk jazz club in San Francisco. This CD combines almost everything from two albums he recorded there in the late '50s: the entirety of A Night at the Blackhawk, and all songs save one from Live and Direct. This is on the mellow side for Tjader, even by the vibraphonist's standards; if A Night at the Blackhawk is low-energy, Live and Direct is positively sleepy. A Night at the Blackhawk employs an all-star sextet including Willie Bobo on drums, Mongo Santamaria on congas, and Vince Guaraldi on piano. Despite the presence of Bobo and Santamaria though, it's only in the Latin-Afro-Cuban mood about half the time. That's heard on the mambo version of "Stompin' at the Savoy," "I Love Paris," and Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia," the last of which is of course a natural for the Latin-jazz treatment; otherwise it's pretty inside, straight-ahead stuff. Although Live and Direct was billed to the Cal Tjader Quintet, it in fact usually features just a quartet of Tjader, Lonnie Hewitt on piano, Victor Venegas on bass, and Willie Bobo on drums. The leader doesn't even play on "My Romance," a showcase for Hewitt. Latin-Afro-Cuban-jazz fusion ...

Big Techno Werewolves CD music
$18.95 Music has always been a part of my being. When I was smaller, my dad sat me in front of the speakers of his stereo. I have always had an interest in music, but I did not begin to pursue what was inside of me all along until the end of high school.I began playing gospel music and I have been playing ever since. After 141/2 years of using my gift, I know this is my passion, my love, and my profession. Gospel music opened the door for me to begin exploring my gift. I consider it my 'backbone'. I played for my first church at the age of 20. Playing, teaching vocals, and mending voice parts together to make beautiful sounds was my mission. As I began to play, my skills as a keyboardist began to blossom. I started to become a confident musician and I realized that I had a tremendous contribution in the music field. As the years passed, people began to know who I was. That was really cool to me. I really enjoyed playing gospel music, but I wanted to try something different. Many people have said that I have a jazzy style, so I started to listen to several different jazz artists. I began studying Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Jimmy Smith, Stevie Wonder, and the list goes on and on. I then began to develop my own 'feel' for jazz music. My own sound began to surface. Some people have even told me that I have a signature sound. I really thought that was cool. I really began to find myself as a jazz musician. That's where my project originated. I already had some decent musical equipment and I was knowledgeable on certain equipment that could enhance my idea of this jazz project. I started mapping out my ideas and the music just started to flow out of me. The project started in June of 06, and I completed it at the beginning of December. During my 'work ...
