| | Preludes Fugues & Riffs Influence Of Jazz Preludes, Fugues And Riffs - Jazz In Classical Music CD (1999)
Rachmaninov: Moments Musicaux; Moussorgsky / Alain Lefèvre
$7.69 Since its genesis jazz has fascinated classical musicians, and this disc documents some of the traffic at the crossroads. Among the first European composers to get into jazz was Darius Milhaud, whose 'La Creation du Monde' joyfully appropriates the instrumentation and energy of early jazz, much as Igor Stravinsky's 'Ebony Concerto,' written for the Woody Herman band, distills the essence of late swing-era cool.
Of course there's George Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue' which seems to swallow jazz, pop, Broadway, and Hollywood in a single gulp, especially in this wildly animated performance with an original Gershwin piano roll playing the solo part as Michael Tilson Thomas and his orchestra do their best to keep up. Then, at the other end of the metabolic spectrum, Gil Evans' legendary adaptation of Rodrigo's nostalgic 'Concierto de Aranjuez' showcases the trumpet of Miles Davis in mellow repose. All the performances come from the Sony/Columbia archives, with maestro Leonard Bernstein in the Milhaud, clarinetist Benny Goodman in the Stravinsky, and both together in Bernstein's 'Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs.'
This collection contains both mono and stereo recordings.
