| | Art Blakey Jazz Messengers CD - Import Art Blakey Discography of CDs
This is the U.K. import version of Jazz genius Art Blakey's classic 1958 album JAZZ MESSENGERS, featuring Thelonious Monk.
Two giants of modern jazz collaborate on this session of all-Monk tunes. Recorded in 1958, Blakey's always-impressive Jazz Messengers are joined by the Mad Professor himself (this record affords a glimpse of Monk as a distinguished and individual accompanist, in addition to his usual dazzling lead performances), for workouts on such classics as "Blue Monk," "Rhythm-a-ning," and "In Walked Bud."
Side by side, Blakey and Monk exhibit a strong, electric interplay, and the similarities of their approaches (both are concerned with space, polyrhythms, meter and accent) are evident. In "I Mean You," for example, Blakey carries the standard time of the piece, yet introduces a simultaneous line that forms a dialogue with the melody and rhythm. Likewise, Monk improvises harmonic variations in the two choruses of the same song; the first is a descending motif, the second a contrasting line turned around and inside out. Inventive treats like these, as well as some strong playing from horn men Johnny Griffin and Bill Hardman, make this outing of the Messengers and Monk of interest to aficionados and casual listeners alike.

JazzTimes (9/99, p.89) - "...Monk's solos here are among the most vivid recorded examples of his perfect time and his don't-fill-in-the-blanks approach to soloing....a fine and underrated edition of the Messengers..." Art Blakey Jazz Messengers Songs | 1. | Evidence | |

| | Roy Hargrove Emergence CD (2009)
Jazz Messengers album
$13.99 Trumpeter Roy Hargrove has been in some exotic musical environments in the past -- from his various quintets, quartets, his Afro-Cuban outfit Crisol, and his funk band the RH Factor, he's pretty much done it all. And while he's played in various big bands before, he's never led his own until now. Emergence on the Groovin' High imprint features a 19-member big band, playing a set of 11 standards and originals by Hargrove and bandmembers as well as a track written for the leader by none other than pianist Chucho Valdés -- who doesn't appear here. The roots for this project go all the way back to 1995 when Hargrove formed a big band to play the New York Jazz Festival. The group went through many metamorphoses when he played a series of club and festival gigs over the intervening years. The set begins with "Velera," a tune written and arranged by Hargrove. It's a ballad in modal style with extended harmonies and a lovely textural palette. The composer employs restraint to bring forth his gorgeous melody. It's followed by "Ms. Garvey, Ms. Garvey," written and arranged by baritone saxophonist Jason ...

| | Oscar Peterson At The Concertgebouw CD (1957)
Jazz Messengers songs
$10.79 OSCAR PETERSON TRIO AT THE CONCERTGEBOUW is actually a live recording of a concert at The Civic Opera House and bonus tracks from an LP titled THE MODERN JAZZ QUARTET AND THE OSCAR PETERSON TRIO AT THE OPERA HOUSE which were originally recorded at the Shrine Auditorium. Although Oscar Peterson and his trio did perform a midnight concert on April 12-13, 1958, no recording of this concert has been found.
This album--the title has been a misnomer since its initial release in 1957--was not recorded at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam but at the Civic Opera House in Chicago. That bit of trivia aside, this is an exceptional snapshot of the magic produced by Oscar Peterson's mid-'50s trio. When guitarist Herb Ellis and bassist Ray Brown locked in with Peterson's piano, the three unfurled a tornado of musical ideas that wrapped bop, swing, popular balladry, and chamber music in highly complex, beautiful arrangements.
Brown and Ellis keep pace with Peterson's trademark velocity on hyper-accelerated takes on standards ("The Lady is a Tramp") and mid-tempo blues ("Bluesology"), moving between mainstream jazz ("I've Got the World On a String") and music that is quite advanced ("Budo"). Though Peterson would work in a trio format for much ...
| | Charlie Parker With Strings: The Master Takes CD (1995)
Jazz Messengers album
$11.39 Recorded in New York between December 1947 and 1952. Includes liner notes by Joe Goldberg and Norman Granz.
This is an expanded version of the early-'50s album that broadened Charlie Parker's audience by focusing on the beautiful lyricism of his playing. These recordings feature Parker's alto saxophone over a gorgeous bed of strings, but perhaps an even more significant departure is the fact that he simplified his phrasing. His wondrously uncurling ribbons of notes are supplanted by the confident ease with which he embraces each of these melodies, dancing through and around them and never losing their essential character. On an album of back-to-back standouts, "April in Paris" is a towering beauty. Comprised primarily of what were--or have since become--standards, this is as fine a place as any to see exactly why Parker is perhaps the preeminent improviser in the history of jazz.
Personnel: Charlie Parker (alto saxophone); Manny Fidler, Bronislaw Gimpel, Harry Melnikoff, Sid Harris, Sylvan Shulman, Zelly Smirnoff, Ted Blume, Stan Karpenia, Howard Kay, Sam Caplan, Milton Lomask, Samuel Rand, Jack Zayde, Harry Katzman, Max Hollander, Gene Orloff (vocals); Art Ryerson (guitar); Myor Rosen, Verlye Mills, Wallace McManus (harp); Dave Uchitel, Nat Nathanson, Fred Ruzilla, Frank Brieff, Isadore Zir (viola); Joe Benaventi, Frank Miller , Maurice Brown (cello); John LaPorta (clarinet); Eddie Brown, Tommy Mace, Mitch Miller (oboe); Art Drelinger (woodwinds); Sonny Salad, Murray Williams, Toots Mondello (alto saxophone); Flip Phillips, Hank Ross, Pete Mondello (tenor saxophone); Stanley Webb, Manny Albam (baritone saxophone); Chris Griffin , Al Porcino, Ray Wetzel, Doug Mettome, Bernie Privin (trumpet); Vinnie Jacobs, Joseph Singer (French horn); Will Bradley, Bill Harris (trombone); Bart Varsalona ...

Jazz Messengers CD music
$8.59 On 1967's SILK & SOUL Nina Simone brings her blues- and jazz-steeped background to a set of more straightforward soul tunes. As usual, though, there is little straightforward about Simone's versatile delivery, which ranges from smooth, understated groovers (a nightclub-styled version of "The Look of Love") to bluesy, jazzy swing ("Go to Hell") ...
