If Manchester's Damon Gough opened the majors up to the profitable pleasures of single songwriters by way of his Badly Drawn alter ego, so Kathryn Williams cemented the genre-crashing the shortlist of the 2000 Mercury Music Awards with Little Black Numbers, her follow-up to the curiously titled Dog Leap Stairs debut, both released through her own self-financed Caw imprint. Critical acclaim resulted in a swathe of sales, a management deal with Alan McGee, and a record contract with East West with Old Low Light, the first new material to appear since. If the successful re-release of the aforementioned Numbers in the fall of 2001 went to Williams' head, it certainly isn't noticeable with this stunning third album rippling with the understated emotion upon which her previous work relied here in all its silver-lined melancholic glory. As familiar as it is enjoyable, the music itself proves a delightful echo of the sentiments of each song -- a lonely piano and cello the only feasible accompaniment to "Tradition," while the backing of "Swimmer" offers a chirpier backing that perfectly captures the spirit of the song. 42 minutes of beautiful bliss. ~ Kingsley Marshall

On two separate nights in August 2002 and January 2003, several singer/songwriters and musicians in the local scene gathered at Marilyn's on 12th & K Streets in Sacramento, CA to pay tribute to Bob Dylan. Highlights from those two evenings are assembled on this 13-song CD, Positively 12th and K: A Bob Dylan Tribute which, though billed to Jackie Greene/Sal Valentino & Friends, is more of a various-artists compilation. Beau Brummels fans should note that Valentino sings lead on just four of the tracks; singer/songwriter Greene takes lead on four others, with the Jackie Greene Band serving as the backing group for nine of the cuts. Lesser-known singers Mick Martin, Sherman Baker, Lew Fratis, and Billy Harper, Jr. serve as the vocal frontmen on the remainder of the program. 1973's tellingly named Mudanzas (which means "changes" in Spanish) was where it all started to go pear-shaped for England's Stray. Frustrated with the British media's dismissive attitude toward their first three albums, and eager to expand their following beyond a loyal stable of heavy prog diehards, the quartet enlisted producer Andrew Powell to embellish many songs on Mudanzas with loads of brass and string arrangements, perplexing many consumers, as well as media professionals. At least none could fault the size of the band's "cojones" (might as well stick with the Spanish theme here, right?) when faced with the western movie soundtracking of instrumental opener "Changes," or bite-sized symphony "Come on Over," with its ambitious emulation of Electric Light Orchestra. Equally daring were the album's many tracks enhanced with horn sections: "Gambler" was an upbeat saxophone-laden single; "I Believe It" an elegiac number crowned with a guitar solo reminiscent, in key, to "Stairway to Heaven"; and "Pretty Things" more urgent, with room for blistering six-string work from Del Bromham. The guitarist did away entirely with these frills on more stripped-down, fan-familiar hard rock efforts like the Quadrophenia-esque "It's Alright Ma!" and the Status Quo-styled boogie rock of "Hallelujah," then led the group down distinctly Beatles-ish roads on "Oil Fumes and Sea Air" and "Soon as You've Grown," with its soothing, McCartney-like vocals and what might be synthesizers or real oboes rounding out the Sgt. Pepper feel. In the end, though, it was a credit to Stray's formidable talents that they even managed to keep all of this variety together in any shape or form, but Mudanzas nevertheless failed to take them to the next level of commercial success, and alienated many members of their dedicated hard rock fan base. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
