A reading of the track listing to Extended Versions will look rather familiar to a loyal Graham Parker fan, and with good reason -- the same ten songs appeared in the very same order on Parker's 1979 masterpiece Squeezing out Sparks. So has someone at BMG repackaged Squeezing out Sparks for some reason? Well, no, not quite. After Squeezing out Sparks was released to rave reviews and Parker and his band the Rumour were getting lots of press for their firestorm live shows, the promotional department at his label, Arista, took recordings of two Parker concerts (taped by radio stations for later broadcast), pulled out all the tunes from Squeezing out Sparks, sequenced them in the same order as the studio album, tacked on two extra songs for good measure (Parker's acerbic kiss-off to his old label, "Mercury Poisoning," and a corking cover of the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back"), and released a limited pressing of the results to press and radio only under the title Live Sparks. Twenty-six years later, some bright young thing at BMG has pulled Live Sparks off the shelf, clipped off the two songs that didn't appear on Squeezing out Sparks, and shipped it out with cut-rate artwork and minimal liner notes as Extended Versions. The reasoning behind this release is utterly baffling, but for Graham Parker fans, this budget-priced disc is buried treasure. While the original Squeezing out Sparks is a more satisfying listen, these performances capture the Rumour at the height of their considerable powers, sounding fierce and energetic at every turn, and these are ten of Parker's very best songs, which he sings with the force and gravity they deserve. Someone at BMG should be thanked for finally giving these performances the stand-alone commercial release they deserve, and then sent to bed without dinner for not letting anyone know what they've done. ~ Mark Deming Graham Parker Extended Versions Songs | 1. | Discovering Japan | $0.99 | |

When Matchbox Twenty's first album became a hit, some critics lumped the band in with flash-in-the-pan rock acts of the day. What these early naysayers missed, of course, is that in vocalist Rob Thomas, Matchbox Twenty had one of the finest mainstream pop/rock songwriters in the business. Not only did Thomas rack up a string of hits with the Florida group, but he also co-penned "Smooth" from Santana's Grammy-winning 1999 comeback album, SUPERNATURAL.
With SOMETHING TO BE, his solo debut, Thomas pulls out all the stylistic stops, revealing ...

Extended Versions music CDs
$10.49 Digitally transferred from original masters by Doug Schwartz at the MCA Studios, Glendale, California.
This is a collection of all the songs Elton John recorded with R&B legend Thom Bell. Three of the tracks were released in 1979 as a "Disco 12 Inch." The remaining three are released here for the first time anywhere.
In the fall of 1977, disco was in the air and Elton John was in a Philadelphia studio cutting some sessions with producer Thom Bell. In Spectoresque fashion, Bell filled the recording booths with an army of musicians, including The Spinners on background vocals and MFSB handling horns and strings. Originally released as a three-song 12-inch single, THE COMPLETE THOM BELL SESSIONS was reissued on CD with three previously unreleased songs.
Much like the irresistible Top 10 hit "Mama Can't Buy You Love" (found on the original release), newer additions to the CD release such as "Nice And Slow" and "Country Love Song" are awash in Bell's trademark lush production. Unlike other artists of the time who had no business dabbling with dance music, John had a musical malleability and love of R&B that made for a perfect match with Bell's Philly soul style. Under the producer's steady hand, John's singing is silky smooth on "Three Way Love Affair," ...
| | Iggy And The Stooges Metallic K.O. CD (1976)
Extended Versions songs
$17.49 Recorded live at Michigan Palace, Detroit, Michigan on October 6, 1973 & February 9, 1974. Includes liner notes by Iggy Pop, Giovanni Dodomo & Nick Kent.
Metallic K.O. isn't quite as epochal as its reputation would have you believe. Time has had its way with it, diluting its original impact, not just through the natural ebb and flow of time, but in the way that historical accuracy has provided a record that might be true to the letter but betrays the myth. Most of the original bootlegs of Metallic K.O. consisted of two separate performances, both recorded toward the end of the band's run, including its very final show, legendary for Iggy's baiting of a hostile audience of drunk bikers. This bootleg was ferocious, capturing the highlights of both shows, distilling its rawest essence. Metallic 2X K.O. performs a historical service by presenting the two shows in their entirety, and while this is welcome, separating the performance does a disservice to the myth. On the original vinyl, the second half of both shows is captured, and the momentum is blinding, capturing the Stooges gleefully careening through a set of new material (including songs like "Cock in Pocket" and "I Got a Right" that didn't show up on studio albums). Here, even the final show seems more like a conventional show -- albeit a show that ends with bottles being thrown onto the stage and the singer brazenly taunting an audience that hates him. And the funny thing about this is that it seems more fun than scary, just a big prank pulled by the Stooges as they recklessly belt out their sleaziest songs and ending it all with a monumental version of "Louie Louie." Yes, the recording is an audience tape and it's nearly antiaudiophile, but music this raw and unhinged deserves nothing less. And make no mistake, in any incarnation, this is one of the best rock live albums, nothing but pure, insane energy. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
There was a time when you really had to hunt for a copy of Metallic KO, chasing false lead after false lead until you finally came upon that backstreet record store that had imported a copy or two of the vinyl (and marked the price up accordingly). Today the thing is everywhere, and in so many perplexing permutations that, sometimes, you wish the CD revolution hadn't made everything so easy for people. Make them work again for their music -- it would mean an awful lot more to them if they did. Because Metallic KO means the world -- to anyone and everyone who ever sat down and unsuspectingly dropped needle onto wax and then reeled back in horror; this ain't rock & roll, it's a snuff movie. And the fact that it all sounds so tame these days just shows how much it's become a part of the language. This is not the "true" Metallic KO. Spread out over two CDs, it serves up six songs ...
