Reissue. Instrumental W/ 1 Bonus Track.

Producer: The Metal Finger Villain Lord Dihoo.
Containing instrumental versions of previously released vocal tracks (everything from MF Doom's Operation: Doomsday to his work with K.M.D. and Monster Island Czars is represented here), a handful of previously vinyl-only cuts and some borrowed guest tracks from the likes of DJ Spinna, DJ Cucumber Slice, and Doom's long-lamented little brother DJ Sub-Roc, Special Herbs, Vol. 1 & 2 is a mish-mash of prog-inflected beats and crackpot schematics that wavers between being a little overlong and flirting with divine inspiration. Longtime fans shouldn't be fooled by the seemingly fresh track titles, though -- in keeping with the album's theme, even the most familiar beats have been renamed. In spite of MF Doom's signature production, which casts prog music's liquid tones on a variety of organic instruments, a few of these recycled cuts ("Arrow Root," "Mullein") suffer from repetition when unveiled in instrumental form. Sandwiched between some of the more trying loops, however, are some dazzlingly inventive offerings, namely the '70s cop-drama squeal of "Coriander," the rolling crush of "Fenugreek," the wiffly flutes of "Nettle Leaves," and the plush, liquid soul of "Monosodium Glutamate." Even the much-maligned low-budget game show cheese of "Zatar" deserves a nod, if nothing else than for its sheer imagination. ~ Mark Pytlik

Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) 4 stars

5 stars mf doom is the illest producer
the reason this is so great is because mf doom didn't even use very good technology to produce his beats. his skills at production are just plain incredible. just listen to charnsuka that is pure ill. anyone wanting some of the best beats of all time should pick this up. also i got to give mad respect to operation: doomsday. get that too.

3 stars Not one of Metal Face's better ones
This album is just not that good (for Doom)... plain and simple. I am a huge fan, and that is why i am fairly dissapointed in this album. It is a beat CD, with 1 exception (the first track w/ M.O.P.) however the beats are all basically 4 minute long loops. There is very little change in each song and they get repetitive. It would have been nice to see more change within each song. Myrrh is the beat to Fried Frienz off MM... Food, and Lovage is the beat to Guinnesses.

4 stars Pretty Good!!
After hearing MadVillian(which was my 1st introduction to MF Doom) I thought I'd try some of his other stuff. A lot of people I know recommended this. Most of the beats on this are good but a couple are repetitive and another thing that dissapointed me was that 1 or 2 of'em were on the MadVillian LP, but with lyrics offcourse. All in all I'da say it's an above average LP which is quite enjoyable.

Over the course of just four albums, Ray (a.k.a. Ray Leonard) has emerged as one of the most consistently excellent craftsmen in the field of electronic keyboard-based new age music. His music is at once new and old. It harkens back to the golden era of this genre when artists used all manner of synthesizers in celebration of the ethereal feel and celestial sounds the instruments could uniquely make, yet it is wholly modern in superb production quality (Leonard's CDs always sound terrific) and in its avoidance of cliché. The other aspect of Ray Leonard's recordings that I have come to admire, is his ability to stamp his trademark "vibe" on his music, no matter what the tempo or particular mood of a piece. For me, this is the mark of a truly great new age artist, as only the best are able to do this time after time. Leonard concentrates on composing and performing music that evokes both deep peace and also a subtle sense of awe and wonder (perfectly portrayed by the album cover). When rhythms are present, as they are on some tracks, they are gentle and unforced, never strident or in your face. While there are moments when the music strays into a minor key, much of the album is bathed in warm major key notes and chords. To my ears, some of the tracks also carry a hint of classic space music as well, ...

Cassandra Wilson Thunderbird CD  (2006)

Metal Fingers Presents: Special Herbs Vol. 1 & 2
CD $13.45  4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Personnel: Cassandra Wilson (vocals); Marc Ribot (guitar); Keefus Ciancia (piano, keyboards, bass guitar, programming); Mike Elizondo (synthesizer, upright bass, bass guitar, programming); Reginald Veal (upright bass, bass guitar); Jim Keltner, Bill Maxwell (drums).
While many jazz singers chase the ghosts of yesteryear revisiting the same vocal standards again and again, Cassandra Wilson has chosen a different path. She retains her fluid, smoky, and sometimes throaty phrasing, but paints with a more expansive palette. THUNDERBIRD finds Wilson digging still deeper into American blues and folk traditions while producer T. Bone Burnett frames her voice with spacious production, highlighting acoustic and electric guitars, percussion, and judiciously sampled rhythms. The songs, a mix of originals and thoughtfully chosen covers--from the contemporary (Jacob Dylan's "Closer To You") to the ages-old ("Red River Valley")--are driven not so much by swing as by the innately compelling sway of Wilson's voice.
