Obviously, one just wants any album with a title as wicked-cool as Erotic Grit Movies to be a garage-rocking classic in the tradition of the Cramps. Song titles like "Girls Like It Too" and "Weird Things Can Happen" only up the ante. Yet while Erotic Grit Movies has its hard-partying charms, Farfisa organist Ami is matched only by the The 45's Trey Tidwell as a master of this über-punk instrument, and singer Jamie has seemingly no respect for his own larynx, given the abuse he metes out to it throughout these 12 songs. But the overall effect is less Cramps-like fun than a mixture of Fun House-era Stooges fury and the first wave of British punk bands' desperation. The songs are largely of the short sharp-shock variety -- half of them are under two minutes -- but even in those brief settings, the group manages to create both tension and release; in this context, a longer workout like the comparatively expansive four-minute closer "Sound Mutilation" serves the same function as the Stooges' apocalyptic "L.A. Blues," taking the album's aggressive aesthetic to its logical conclusion. Not fun, perhaps, but appealing. ~ Stewart Mason

| | Willie Nelson Stars & Guitars CD (2002)
Erotic Grit Movies songs
$12.59 Considering STARS & GUITARS's pop idol-heavy list of guests, one might expect the album to be just a live retread of Willie Nelson's 2002 studio effort, THE GREAT DIVIDE. Fortunately, unlike that album, which attempted to fit the artist into the same pop box that helped Carlos Santana out of a career slump, this is ol' Willie's show through and through. As anyone who has seem him live knows, Nelson's onstage personality is such a powerful force of nature, no one can hope to tame it. STARS AND GUITARS shows, once again, that though Willie Nelson is capable of playing any type of music he chooses, his musical personality is so strong that most guest artists can only hobble along behind him, thanking their lucky stars for the opportunity. Notable exceptions are Willie's contemporaries Ray Price and Aaron Neville, both of whom make the reasons for their legendary status abundantly ...
| | Hi-Risers Lost Weekend CD (2004)
Erotic Grit Movies album
$12.89 So, no one seems to cover Hank Ballard tunes anymore, right? (Does anyone even remember who Hank Ballard was?) Well, every other daddy-o's lack of foresight is the Hi-Risers' particular genius, and the gain of every hepcat who has had the pleasure of tuning into the trio's shimmy-shimmy ko-ko boppin', finger-poppin' throwback rock & roll. Lost Weekend is yet another of the band's blowout weekend shindigs thrown especially for those who miss or missed out on, the first time around, the late '50s and go-go early '60s and every permutation of those years' primal, sweaty, essential three-chord ...

| | Mad Tea Party Big Top Soda Pop CD (2006)
Erotic Grit Movies music CDs
$10.65 Reaching desperately for a genre to stuff this madcap trio into, critics scratch their heads, yearn for the days when labels weren't required, then admit defeat, and toss Mad Tea Party into folk out of pure frustration. Hey, they use ukuleles, kazoo and a slide whistle, so what do you expect? Nothing less, but the Tea Party deserve better. But let's be clear, although they definitely employ some folk elements, they are not a folk group, and on their latest album, Big Top Soda Pop, their third and most accomplished set to date, the trio weave in so many different genres that perhaps it's best described as Americana for the modern generation. Shreds of ragtime, tatters of R&B, touches of blues, bursts of rockabilly, slivers of C&W, tinges of hillbilly hoe-downs, lashes of pop, snippets of rock, a feathering of folk, and even, on the title track, the hurdy-gurdy sound of the circus; all are threaded through the set But as eclectic as it, this Tea Party has a theme, or at least a distinctive sound that makes even the most diverse numbers instantly identifiable as the Mad one's own. Partially this is down to Ani Worthern's vocals, sweet and upbeat or calm and soothing, her come-hither intonations draws one straight ...
