(1 Customer Review)
Many jazz critics have dismissed the 1970s as a vast wasteland for jazz, but in fact, just the opposite was true. The 1970s were banner years for jazz -- not only because of the fearless explorations of fusion and soul-jazz innovators, but also because of all the interesting modal post-bop coming out. Recorded in 1975 and 1978, Vibrations, Themes and Serenades illustrates the richness of modal jazz and paints an impressive picture of that time. This was the second LP that Byron Morris recorded with Unity, and the band is quite cohesive on spiritually-minded pieces such as "Like a Galaxy of Stars," "Eyewitness News Bluze" and "ERAA," all of which feature the expressive vocalist Jay Clayton. Gratefully, three of the tracks on this record -- "Panamanian Aire," "Theme for Rahsaan" and Kenny Barron's "Sunshower" -- would be reissued on the 1994 CD Vibrations in Time. ~ Alex Henderson

Vibrations, Themes And Serenades album
$9.09 For the past few decades, Al Jarreau has established himself as a truly modern jazz singer, one for the post-fusion generation--those who grew up with the sounds of the cordial contemporary jazz of George Benson, Spyro Gyra, and Herbie Hancock. CHRISTMAS is Jarreau's first-ever collection of holiday songs on which he wraps his supple, honeyed vocal chords around some traditional Christmas classics. Jazz vocal combo Take 6 lend their voices for "I'll Be Home For Christmas" and the considered, varied arrangements of Jay Graydon and Jarreau himself keep the proceedings interesting.
Arrangers: Chris Walker ; Clare Fischer; Brent Fisher; Joe Turano; David Witham; Jay Graydon; Al Jarreau; Larry Williams ; Jorge Calandrelli.

| | Ray Davies Kinks Choral Collection CD (2009)
Vibrations, Themes And Serenades music CDs
$15.05 Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink Ray Davies. His very presence as arranger and lead vocal means The Kinks Choral Collection isn't nearly as stuffy and middlebrow as so many of these orchestral rock albums; he manages to inject some semblance of rock & roll by pushing the songs forward with guitar, and letting the rhythms swing instead of plod. This looseness is the first big surprise of the album. The second is its unrepentant but quite possibly accidental silliness, how many of the major guitar riffs are transposed for choir, an audacious idea in concept that's simply goofy in practice. These choral chants hamper the hardest rocking songs here ...

| | Herb Alpert South Of The Border CD (1964) Remastered; Special Edition
Vibrations, Themes And Serenades album
$10.09 Herb Alpert/Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass/Tijuana Brass: Herb Alpert (trumpet); John Pisano (electric guitar); Tonni Kalash (trumpet); Bob Edmondson (trombone); Lou Pagani (piano); Pat Senatore (bass guitar); Nick Ceroli (drums).
Herb Alpert was still using an array of SoCal studio all-stars as his Tijuana Brass when South of the Border (1964) began to restore the combo's good name after the modest Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass, Vol. 2 (1963) failed to ignite a fire in listener's ears. In his essay accompanying Shout! Factory's 2005 Signature Series reissue of South of the Border, Alpert comments that the Sol Lake composition "Mexican Shuffle" "opened a new door for me." That passageway meant the loss of the Tijuana Brass' practically forced mariachi style and the rise of Alpert's approach in arranging familiar melodies in fresh, creative settings. Nowhere would this stylistic progression be as pronounced as in the horn-driven updates of several then-concurrent chart hits. For instance, the mod sonic wrinkle in "Girl from Ipanema" emits a darkness veiled in mystery, directly contrasting the light buoyancy of "Hello! Dolly" or the footloose feel of the Beatles' "All My Loving." They seamlessly fit in with Sol Lake's "Salud, Amor y Dinero" and a cover of Julius Wechter's playful mid-tempo "Up Cherry Street" -- which Wechter's own ...

Vibrations, Themes And Serenades CD music
$15.29 Though their paths crossed on the Miles Davis classic IN A SILENT WAY and on Larry Coryell's SPACES, this disc is the first actual collaboration between pianist Chick Corea and guitarist John McLaughlin. The Five Peace Band truly is a super-group, the other members being the versatile bassist Christian McBride (acoustic and electric), saxophonist Kenny Garrett (a Miles alumnus too), and fusion drumming ace Vinnie Colaiuta. LIVE features cozy, intimate ...
| | Soundscape UK Uptown Groove CD (2000)
Vibrations, Themes And Serenades music CDs
$9.69 On their first two releases Soundscape UK combined elements of acid in with a radio-ready sound but with Uptown Groove their music is aimed strictly at the smooth jazz marketplace. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as the duo is good at creating club etched background music but the result is more polished and professional then memorable. The instrumental tracks are respectable but have little individual personality but about a third of the album is reserved for upscale retro soul and these tracks work best, thanks ...
