10-CD singles box for the Finnish goth rock act includes one previously unreleased single, 'It's All Tears (Drown In This Love)' & the nine which came before it, 'Wicked Game', 'When Love & Death Embrace', 'Join Me' , 'Right Here In My Arms', 'Poison Girl', 'Gone With The Sin', 'Pretending', 'In Joy & Sorrow' & 'Heartache Every Moment', including B-sides & remixes. 39-tracks in all. Packged in a deluxe box. BMG.
Similar in packaging to Smashing Pumpkins' infamous THE AEROPLANE FLIES HIGH, this set of 10 CD singles is loaded with all kinds of bonus material from the Scandinavian goth rockers. We're talking radio edits, remixes, live tunes, club versions, the works. As the title suggests, H.I.M.'s Single Collection gathers some of the Finnish Goth-metal group's definitive singles from their career, including "It's All Tears," "When Love and Death Embrace," "Gone With the Sin," and their cover of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game." The collection also features many B-sides, including "Again," "Salt In Our Wounds," and "Please Don't Let It Go," as well as instrumental versions, acoustic versions, and remixes of some of the band's hits. Overall, Single Collection is pretty comprehensive, but some fans may be frustrated by the presentation: the set offers the songs as though they were actual CD-singles, dividing 44 tracks over 10 discs. While this does add a feeling of authenticity to the set, it might be inconvenient for some listeners. Either way, Single Collection should be of interest to most hardcore H.I.M. (His Infernal Majesty) fans. ~ Heather Phares

Single Collection
$39.49 Japanese exclusive 2001 remastered reissue of 1977 album.
Queen: Freddie Mercury (vocals, piano); Brian May (guitar, background vocals); John Deacon (bass); Roger Taylor (drums, background vocals). This is one rock's most noteworthy albums of the 70s, if only for the appearance of "We Will Rock You" and "We Are The Champions." The crystal clear sound is provided by a 24 bit digital remastering. If Day at the Races was a sleek, streamlined album, its 1977 successor, News of the World, was its polar opposite, an explosion of styles that didn't seem to hold to any particular center. It's front-loaded with two of Queen's biggest anthems -- the stomping, stadium-filling chant "We Will Rock You" and its triumphant companion, "We Are the Champions" -- which are quickly followed by the ferocious "Sheer Heart Attack," a frenzied rocker that hits harder than anything on the album that shares its name, a remarkable achievement in itself. Three songs, three quick shifts in mood, but that's hardly the end of it. As the News rolls on, you're treated to the arch, campy crooning of "My Melancholy Blues," a shticky blues shuffle in "Sleeping on the Sidewalk," and breezy Latin rhythms on "Who Needs You." Then there's the neo-disco of "Fight from the Inside," which is eclipsed by the mechanical funk of "Get Down, Make Love," a dirty grind that's stripped of sensuality. That cold streak on "Get Down, Make Love" runs through the album as a whole. Despite the explosion of sounds and rhythms, this album doesn't add up to party thanks to that slightly distancing chilly vibe that hangs over the album. Nevertheless, ...

Audio Remasterer: Simon Smart. Recording information: Island Studios (??/1968-03/1970); Lansdowne Studios (??/1968-03/1970); Maida Vale Studios (??/1968-03/1970); Pan Studios (??/1968-03/1970); Phillips Studios (??/1968-03/1970); PYE Studios (??/1968-03/1970); Trident Studios, London, England (??/1968-03/1970). Authors: Michael Walters; Brian Blain. Photographers: Keef; Mo Foster. The self-titled album by the short-lived outfit Affinity displays a lot of potential, which if not wholly successful has an individuality separating them from their more jazzy and progressive peers. If Linda Hoyle's talent for fusing the vocal traits of Bessie Smith, Grace Slick, and Sandy Denny together semi-successfully is the defining point, then Lynton Naiff's pounding Hammond workouts fall somewhere between the exceptional and the overdone. With the addition of John Paul Jones' fine brass arrangements, which are to the fore throughout, a very soulful feel reminiscent of the latter work of Brian ...
