It Must Be Magic album McGrier) and "The Ballad Of Cradle Rob And Me" (T. It Must Be Magic CD music Marie/J.D. Jones). Principally recorded at Motown, Hollywood, California and Wonderland Studios, Los Angeles, California. Originally released on Gordy (G8-1004M1). Includes liner notes by A. Scott Galloway. Former protégé of Superfreak funk maestro Rick James, Mary Christine Brockert, the R&B powerhouse better known as Teena Marie, blossomed into her element on early albums for the Gordy/Motown label. The singer's fourth and final album for Motown, IT MUST BE MAGIC--her second fully self-written, self-produced effort--oversaw Marie's true creative emancipation. In an inspired set taking in smoldering ballads, introspective singer-songwriter-style material, and vibrant dance floor numbers, her versatility is evident throughout. From the jubilant horns and proto-rap-style delivery of "Square Biz" to the thoughtful and poignant tribute to gunned-down Beatle John Lennon ("Revolution"), the entirety of the album is infused with the singer's forceful, robust vocals and imaginative arrangements. ...See Full Description

| A Gem! I'm running out of things to say about Teena Marie’s consistency and breadth of talent. At least one song on this album ("Where's California") sound very similar to a song on her most recent release "Sapphire", that song being "You Blow Me Away". Something like 25 years separates the two songs and yet her distinctive sound is there! Can you believe that despite this fact her sound is still fresh after all these years? Anyway, I'd been meaning to add this one to my collection for quite some time due to three songs "Where's California", "365" and her live version of "Deja Vu (I've Been Here Before)". These are the songs that justify the purchase here because we've all heard "Portuguese Love", "Square Biz", "Square Biz" a million times before, though they're no less entertaining this time around. When is this woman going to properly honored for her stunning body of work? By Marcusj_j (Aurora, IL, USA) |

| Simply Magic! On her last outing with Motown, Teena Marie delivered not only her best work from the label, but what turned out to be her most successful at the time. Beautifully produced with captivating lyrics and vocal arrangements, IT MUST BE MAGIC shines throughout! Prime Cuts: title track, "Square Biz", "Revolution", "Where's California".
