It's subtle, but telling, that the cover of Audioslave's eponymous debut is designed by Storm Thorgerson, the artist behind Pink Floyd's greatest album sleeves. Thorgerson, along with Roger Dean, epitomized the look of the '70s, the era of supergroups, which is precisely what Audioslave is -- a meeting of Rage Against the Machine, minus Zack de la Rocha, with former Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell. Though both bands were leading lights of alt-metal in the '90s, the two came from totally separate vantage points: Rage Against the Machine was fearlessly modern, addressing contemporary politics over Tom Morello's hip-hop-influenced guitar, while Soundgarden dredged up '70s metal fueled with the spirit of punk. That these two vantage points don't quite fit shouldn't be a surprise -- there is little common ground between the two, apart that they're refugees from brainy post-metal bands. Of the two camps, Chris Cornell exerts the strongest influence, pushing the Rage Against the Machine boys toward catchier hooks and introspective material. Occasionally, the group winds up with songs that play to the strengths of both camps, like the storming lead single "Cochise." For Cornell fans, it's a relief to hear him unleash like this, given the reserve of his brooding solo debut, but this is hardly a one-man show. The Rage band, led by the intricate stylings of guitarist Tom Morello, gets their chance to shine, including on numbers that are subtler and shadier than the average Rage tune. Which brings up the primary fault on the album: Perhaps Morello, and perhaps the rest of RATM, are technically more gifted than, say, Soundgarden, but they never sound as majestic, as powerful, or as cinematic as what Cornell's songs need. His muted yet varied solo album proved that he needed muscle, but here it's all muscle, no texture or color. Consequently, many of the songs sound like they're just on the verge of achieving liftoff, never quite reaching their potential. There are moments, usually arriving in the first half, where Audioslave suddenly, inexplicably clicks, sounding like a band, not a marketer's grand scheme. Still, these moments are few and far between and it's hard to get through this album as a whole. By the end, it's clear that this pairing was a clever idea, but not an inspired one. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
A modern day super-group composed of ex-members of heavy rock titans Soundgarden and Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave was subject to some pretty high fan expectations. Luckily, the group delivers just what the doctor ordered: a seamless mix of the styles that made the individual members famous. Basically a stoner rock record par excellence, AUDIOSLAVE strips the genre down to its core, serving up one pile-driving riff after another with minimal, but perfectly placed, production flash. In any given song, the band repeats said riffs with even more bone-crushing attitude each time.
Just when the listener thinks his/her head will go numb from too much stud-rock low E-string twanging and Montrose-era Sammy Hagar-esque wailing, however, Audioslave wisely thrSpin (1/03, p.72) - Ranked #34 on Spin's list of 2002's "Albums of the Year"

4 stars High spots, low spots, but definitely worth the buy
There are some really good tracks on this album, but unfortunately there are some real duds, including a few I can't believe they decided to include. (Can anyone honestly tell me that "Hypnotize" is in the same league as "Show Me How To Live"?) The CD starts off quite well, but totally runs out of steam after track 9. Still, it's a good buy, at least if you grade on a curve.

5 stars Best Audioslave Album. Easily.
This is easily the best Audioslave album. The best audioslave song is show me how to live. That song is just great and so powerful. Other good songs include but are not limited to Like a Stone, Shadow on the Sun, I am the Highway, Hypnotize, and The Last Remaining Light. They are all good songs on this album. Its too bad Audioslave disbaned and there is no chance of them reuniting. Great release and one that you should definitley have in your collection if you like hard rock.

5 stars Match made in Heaven
I've always considered Chris Cornell to be one of, if not THE most unique vocalists I've ever heard, so like alot of people I was really bummed when Soundgarden called it quits. To think He could find the right people to hook up with and retain that signature sound without sacrificing anything in the process was only wishful thinking 'till I heard "Cochise" and "Like a Stone". These guys were meant to make music together.Tom Morello is definitely a force to be reckoned with, toss in Tim and Brad and I would say you have a recipe for greatness. Get ready to be impressed if you haven't copped this disc yet. Remember, you're either part of the problem or part of the solution... check out part of the solution--- audioslave

5 stars Grooovy!
The grooves the boys from Rage come up with here are a good, if not better than anything in their past. Plus they have added more to their musical style. Chris Cornell is simply awesome! Better than Rage and Soundgarden (and I love them both)

5 stars **Worth The Purchase**
Good, straight-foward rock music, no silly gimmicks or rap nonsense here. 'show me how to live', 'Like A Stone' & 'Light My Way' are exceptionaly good tracks, but the whole cd sounds great. Also consider 'Degredation Trip Vol 1&2' by Jerry Cantrell for a superb heavy rock experience.

Contraband features Slash, Duff, and Matt Sorum (as well as additional guitarist Dave Kushner) cranking out an updated version of Guns N' Roses swagger behind Scott Weiland's glammy, elastic vocals. Classic Collection
Petula Clark Classic Collection CDs  (1999) (Import) United Kingdom

Audioslave
CD $18.15  Top 500
CLASSIC COLLECTION contains four CDs of 1960s British pop singer Petula Clark, delving deep into her illustrious career, including huge international hits like "Downtown" and "Don't Sleep in the Subway" to lesser known covers of songs from the Temptations to the Beatles.
Four-CD, 80-song box set of Clark's '60s material contains all of her big U.S. and U.K. hits, numerous singles that were only hits in other countries (usually France), and a bunch of interesting covers, B-sides, and LP tracks, some quite rare. If you're enough of a fan to want more than what you'll find on the usual thorough hits anthology, but not enough of a fan to want everything she ever did, this is perfect. It's got all of the classics, serviceable (although not terribly extensive) liner notes, and a host of interesting items that aren't well-known. These include a 1963 version of "Please Please Me" (sung in French) that was most likely one of the very first Lennon-McCartney ...

Papas Fritas' brand of pop is charming, innocent, and drawn from classic sources as diverse as the Beach Boys, '70s AM radio, Fleetwood Mac, and classic U.S. indie pop. Well, maybe those aren't the most diverse sources, but the group takes them and creates a varied and invigorating sound. Tony Goddess and Shivika Asthana's open-hearted, artless vocals can't help but charm all but the most hard-hearted listeners, and the band's playing is always energetic and full of imagination. Samuel Suite/ Dancing Into One
Aaron Novik Samuel Suite/ Dancing Into One CD  (2008)

Audioslave
CD $16.45
the Samuel SuiteA brief historyMy grandfather was an important part of my life. The first music I listened to were records he would give me of his favorite classical pieces. I would play Mozart and Beethoven on our home phonograph and really try to follow what was happening musically, as per his instructions (This was not music you could get in one listen like a rock song, he would say). One of my favorites was Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Expedition", a suite that I arranged for a 9 piece jazz band years later. I used Moussorgsky's original piano score which provided a great lesson in harmony and composition retained in the music herein. My grandfather and I would have discussions about music all through my life. He hated Bartok (one of my favorites), along with most other modern composers. His favorite was Bach. He especially loved the cantatas. He thought it ironic, being a jew, that his favorite music was about Jesus. When the seeds of this suite started to germinate it was this religious oxymoron that was the impetus. I decided to start writing a series of Bach style chorale's using Jewish scales to create a sort of Jewish equivelant to Bach's christian ones.I wrote 4 and forgot about the project for a few years. I came back to it when I realized my grandfather didn't have much time left. He was dying of Alzheimer's and after 10 years of slow decline his health was deteriorating quickly. There was no logical point in finishing this piece before he died, because in his mental state he had lost all of his passion for music. It would not have meant to him what it would have in his cognizant years. (Actually,I think he would have been proud, weird harmonies and all.)The SuiteSamuel 1- this is one of the original pieces I wrote for this project, using the jewish chorale style. This melody symbolizes my grandfather and is the main theme of the piece. ...to end all...- this is the official start of the story. the setting is World War One Poland, in the small village of Baronovitch where my grandfather was born without the aid of a doctor. I've been told many stories about these early years, and he is very lucky to have survived the amount of fighting that went on in the first few years of his life. Like the War it's named after, this piece is long, intense and ugly.My Country- My grandfather arrived with his family in America at the age of six. His father had gone to America years before to find work and get settled before calling his family over. When he arrived he asked his father "Are you my daddy?" as he had never seen his dad before. This piece tries to put America in an optimism that is harder to feel today. It has a quirky off kilterness that represents an ugliness just under the surface. Betty- this piece is about my grandmother, whom my grandfather was married to for close to 60 years. (she died 2 years before he did). Their relationship was tumultuous love at best and I wanted to capture the beauty of her life ( the waltz ...
