Having made several changes in their business and musical efforts in 1972, Grand Funk Railroad made even more extensive ones in 1973, beginning with their name, which was officially truncated to "Grand Funk." And keyboardist Craig Frost, credited as a sideman on Phoenix, the previous album, was now a full-fledged bandmember, filling out the musical arrangements. The most notable change, however, came with the hiring of Todd Rundgren to produce the band's eighth album. Rundgren, a pop/rock artist in his own right, was also known for his producing abilities, and he gave Grand Funk exactly what they were looking for: We're an American Band sounded nothing like its muddy, plodding predecessors. Sonically, the record was sharp and detailed and the band's playing was far tighter and more accomplished. Most important, someone, whether the band or Rundgren, decided that gruff-voiced drummer Don Brewer should be employed as a lead singer as often as guitarist Mark Farner. Brewer also contributed more as a songwriter, and the results were immediate. The album's title song, an autobiographical account of life on the road written and sung by Brewer, was released in advance of the album and became a gold-selling number one hit, Grand Funk's first really successful single. Despite the band's previous popularity, for many, it must have been the first Grand Funk record they either heard or bought. Elsewhere on the album, Farner contributed his usual wailing vocals and guitar, singing of his heartfelt, if simpleminded, political concerns. But We're an American Band really belonged to Brewer and Rundgren, and its success constituted a redefinition of Grand Funk that came just in time. ~ William Ruhlmann Grand Funk's 1973 release, WE'RE AN AMERICAN BAND, continued the band's winning streak. It's gone on to become one of their most popular albums. Slightly more pop-based than their previous work, the band plays as if it can do no wrong on this strong set. Produced by Todd Rundgren, the album spawned such gems as the rowdy and autobiographical title track, as well as such other highlights as "The Railroad," "Stop Looking Back," and "Ain't Got Nobody." Grand Funk's 1973 release, WE'RE AN AMERICAN BAND, continued the band's winning streak. It's gone on to become one of their most popular albums. GFR Best!!!!!! This was 1973 GFR just barley survived a huge brake up with there manager Terry Knight. Mark, Don and Mel got the name Grand Funk Railroad, Terry Knight got everything else. GFR in 72 Added a forth member in Craig Frost (now with Bob Segar's Silver Bullet band) to round out the sound and put out a self produced album called Phoenix, which had the hit Rock N Roll soul on it, but it was not as commercially successful as there pervious 7 albums. Even with that Hit song many GFR fans felt GFR was gong soft and they needed a much better album, yet they also needed radio friendly songs. Don Brewer, Grand Funk's GREAT Drummer, stepped forward with his song writing and singing and wrote and sung the great number one HIT Were An American Band; It was GFRs first number one hit and became there signature song; it went on to be a smash hit for GFR and one of the biggest rock songs of all time. The Album We're An American Band rock's from start to finish. Of course We're An American Band became a rock anthem (ask Garth Brooks, Kid Rock, Jackal, Bon Jovi, Joe Lynn Turner, Halloween and On and On-so many artists and bands have covered it over the years), Stop Looking Back a Brewer and Farner composition has a wonderful chorus which went "Shoot for the starts when my eyes can't see the star light. Reach for the sun in the night, Stop lookin back at the times I was defeated, I pick myself up and move straight ahead; stop lookin back" an excellent song. Brewer wrote the lyrics and Farner the music. Its funny Farner was the main song writer in GFR BUT Don Brewer Wrote there Biggest Hit We're An American Band and there most sophisticated lyrics in songs such as Stop Lookin Back, I Fell for your Love (from the Born to Die Album), Still Waitin (from the What's Funk Album), and I can Feel Him In The Morning (from the Survival Album). The album also contains The Railroad and Creepin Two of Mark Farner's best written songs, these two songs really show how Mark's writing was maturing. Both songs are spiritual and political. Black Licorice and Walk Like A Man are Two rocker's by Don Brewer that really fill up this album with great rockers. Black Licorice is about Brewer's first sexual experience and Walk Like A man is an in your face rocker expressing GFRs break from knight to daylight. Ain't got Nobody and Loneliest Rider both by Farner, The Former a mid tempo song of lost love and the later a song about the plight of Native Americans in the USA (Mark is part Native American), both great songs. This version of We're An American Band is a 24 Bit remasterred version that sounds wonderful has new liner notes and restored artwork. It also contains four bonus tracks Hooray and The End two Brewer/Farner penned songs that just flat out rock, I can't believe either of these was left off the original album, they turn one of rocks and rolls best albums into an even better hard rocking album. Another Bonus track is a new mix of We're An American Band that is heavy in Guitar that sounds very cool and lastly an acoustic version of walk like a man with fantastic vocals by Don Brewer. All in all a Great album, GFRs Best by a long shot; We're An American Band is a classic and is must have CD for every Rock "N" Roll fan.

$11.39 Idiot: 2008 Demo Review by DOA Check out this great review by Laura Betney at Delusions of Adequacy. Here's a link for the original posting on their site too. Enjoy!http://www.adequacy.net/review.php?reviewID=8887 Idiot, consisting of Nyberg on vox/guitar, Sean Lynch on drums and Jeff Yanchek on bass, met at a Hanson concert according to their Myspace. I think that's probably a wind-up, since the Hanson influences are few and far between on this demo (fortunately, or maybe not depending on your perspective). Instead this sounds like a very metal version of Queens of the Stone Age, mixed with some of the heavier Muse riffs and hints of the screamy bits employed by Die So Fluid and Cortizone. For me, this does verge a bit too far into "metal" sometimes for my tastes, but it has to be admitted that Idiot do what they do very well and provide some enjoyable vocal melodies and great, heavy riffs. Opener "Frankie Sharp" has a fast opening riff, reminiscent of Muse's "Assassin", from their album Black Holes and Revelations, with all the instruments chugging away furiously. This breaks off suddenly, with the bass guitar making the majority of the noise, to reveal vocals best pictured if you could imagine some kind of Josh Homme/Nick Oliveri hybrid - with Homme doing the melodic stuff and Oliveri doing the screamy bits he was so ...
