This Vancouver foursome was already a band to be reckoned with on their first three singles and debut, Something Better Change, but they went for the jugular on Hardcore '81, producing a rare and astonishing moment for the ages, a direct precursor to the Replacements' first LP torch job later that year. With the greatest drummer in punk history in Chuck Biscuits and an equally smokin' bassist in Randy Rampage, 1978-1982 D.O.A. had an unbelievably intense rhythm section to back the heavy, two-guitar power of Joey Shithead and Dave Gregg. With chops that actually bettered their primary influence, the Clash, and a take-on-all-comers attitude, these guys rocked -- and they knew it. With the exception of the much different, faster, more thrash Bad Brains debut, nothing else in the then-new hardcore genre came close to this wild LP. These 14 songs whip by quick with great thrill and tumult, an unusual, fun mixture of drinking buddy "I Don't Give a Shit" party tunes ("My Old Man's a Bum," "Fucked Up Baby"), wry, sardonic culture commentary ("M.C.T.F.D." aka "Middle Class Television Family Daughter," "Unknown"), and sobering sociopolitical outrage ("D.O.A.," "Smash the State," "Slumlord"). But what you can't forget are the machine-gun Biscuits fills, triggered by the merest hint of any looming chord change yet totally anchored on Rampage's booming bass. Or Gregg and Keithley's hot riffs that are so thick and yet slippery that they threaten to explode. Or Keithley's likable bear-growl vocals, as full of bonhomie good-guy spirit and wicked humor as they are with his sweat and vigor. Or songs so catchy, you want to sing them as loud as your lungs will take you. But like the '60s Who, '70s Clash, and '70s Buzzcocks (other bands of this same rank), they just don't come around often. Good thing they made Hardcore '81 before they left us. ~ Jack Rabid

5 stars This CD grabs you by the nuts and doesn't let go
If you like your music fast, loud with just a touch of humour, this CD is for you. This is DOA at their best. The CD also includes some of their 'emergency' releases that were recorded for specific events. This CD is not to be missed, not just by punk fans, but any true rock fan needs this album.

Were they punk, power pop, or surf rock? After listening to Rhino Records' reissue of Agent Orange's classic 1981 debut Living in Darkness, that's probably what the listener will be wondering. By incorporating all three musical elements into one, this influential Orange County, CA. band showed that they were a step ahead of the rest of the punk/hardcore pack. By adding seven hard-to-find cuts (including pre-debut singles and an interview from 1981) to the original album, this reissue of prime Agent Orange material is by far their best release, and the most appealing for newcomers to the band. The group gained ...

About time! For nearly two decades since they went out of print, the first two classic punk DOA LPs were bowdlerized into Bloodied But Unbowed, and then, to address the numerous songs regrettably removed in the process, the Polish import (!) non-LP Greatest Shits appeared. Yet, when one considers how revolutionary and yet how distinct from each other those two LPs were, this state of affairs just made no sense. In an era when so few North American punk greats ever made an actual LP, how could ...

The wonderful thing about punk rock as a recorded medium is its short songs and its penchant for releasing anomalous formats with shorter running times, such as singles and splits, so that one can comprehensively encapsulate a long career in a single disc, such as with the indispensable Minor Threat Complete Discography, or in two discs, as Articles of Faith did. The title leaves nothing to the imagination -- the disc is the first three years of the history of the semi-legendary Chicago troupe, which in this case are the band's contribution to the early The Mastertape compilation, the band's What We Want Is Free EP, and the entire Give ...

Hardcore '81

Eric Burdon and his Animals present a selection of their infectious singles on this collection, with classic songs such as "House of the Rising Sun" and "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" included. This double-disc, 41-track collection does what the title promises. It runs through the Animals' -- and the subsequent Eric Burdon & the Animals' -- singles, A- and B-sides from March 1964's "Baby Let Me Take You Home" till January 1969's cover of "Ring of Fire." By representing both the early- and late-'60s Animals incarnations, it's a relatively comprehensive summation of the band, at least as embodied by their singles. It's not complete since there is nothing from the band's excellent 1977 reunion album Before We Were So Rudely Interrupted. Also, the dreadful 1983 second reunion track "The Night" is incongruously and non-chronologically tacked on as the last cut of the first disc, making the omission of Rudely material that much more frustrating. That said, this is nonetheless a solid compilation of the Eric Burdon-led combo as they progress from the Chicago blues interpreters that exposed ...
You're The Inspiration: A Collection
Peter Cetera You're The Inspiration: A Collection CD  (1997) Import

Hardcore '81
CD $18.59  4.7 stars
Sub-titled "A Collection," that's pretty much what this disc is. Not an album of new material so much as Cetera re-visiting some old favorites with some new treatments. Ever since those first Chicago ballads went gold, Cetera's high-pitched, vaguely soulful voice has come to define a certain genre--call it the "lite-FM" sound. And if you're fond of that style, this is your kind of disc. Cetera teams up with some well-known talent here --on "The Next Time I Fall", Amy Grant offers her fine voice, and the result is a pleasing duet. On "Feels Like Heaven," Cetera teams up with the great Chaka Khan, whose voice is so strong, she almost outshines her host! Cher also appears, on "After All," as does Agnetha Faltskog (formerly of Abba), on the sweeping, melodic ballad "I Wasn't the One." Import only compilation of the former Chicago ...
Classic African-American Ballads
Classic African-American Ballads CD  (2006)

Hardcore '81
CD $10.39  Audio Samples
The African American ballads collected on this intriguing set from Smithsonian Folkways don't differ in obvious ways from the British ballad tradition, with the songs in both streams dealing frequently with death, often from romance gone awry, and several of the selections here ("Mouse on the Hill," "Stewball," "St. James Infirmary," "Gallis Pole") are actually British or Irish in origin. A case could be made that the black ballad tradition in America has a bit more humor to it, more improvisation, and that the singer is more likely to drop suddenly into first person in the lyric, thus personalizing the story, but these would be selective observations rather than codified rules of form, and the fact remains that a ballad's main job, whatever its source, is to tell a story, and if that story should come to a tragic close, all the better for its remembrance. And the stories told here have certainly been remembered, for these songs have been recorded numerous times by black and white singers alike, and tunes like "John Henry" and "Casey Jones" will be familiar to even the most casual listener. In the end, whether sung by blacks or whites, these are American ballads, having absorbed all manner of cultural flotsam, and if some of them are European in origin, they have been thoroughly stretched, altered, and reassembled into essentially new compositions, even if they retain a grain of the original song's ...
